There you go: Two nations divided by the same language! Over here in England we have a Tenor Mandolin which you call a Mandola. We have an Octave Mandola which you call an Octave Mandolin. All very confusing 🥴
@ised-5239 Жыл бұрын
The octave mandola should be mandocello to make sense due to the tuning and tenor mandolin is that OM as in the video above just like Irish tenor banjo. And the normal mandolin is the alto mandolin and the soprano member ones is the piccolo mando.

As a lifelong guitar player, I’ve found the tuning in 5ths of the mandolin (and the mando family) to make a lot more logical sense than the 4ths of the guitar. Now I’m very interested in the mandola. Thanks for this informative video! I may have to save up for one.

Then you might be interesting in checking out Robert Fripp’s New Standart Tuning for guitar which is mostly in 5th
@Eric-sy1xu3 жыл бұрын
God as someone who in the past played violin (& found it SUCH a time investment I found it impossible), I agree with the tuning, the 5th is such a nice tuning I dont want it but at the same time I N E E D it I want to be Bill Bailey 😭😭
@riogrande1633 жыл бұрын
The 4ths and one major 3rd tuning of the guitar, IIRC was done to make chord shapes easier to make, I mean, how are you going to make a D9 chord, or an F#dim7, or a C+ on a mandolin/mandola?

A variant of mandola is the mandocello which is a mandola that is tuned one octave lower than the standard mandola.
@crankjazz5 жыл бұрын
I have a Mandocello and a tenor guitar. Both tuned CGDA. With the tenor guitar at the same pitch as a mandola/viola, and the Mandocello at the same pitch as the cello.
@ised-52395 жыл бұрын
crankjazz Tenor banjo's tuning is also like mandola/viola.

Tenor guitar mandola and tenor banjo have exactly same tuning.
@ised-5239 Жыл бұрын
The standard mandola as in the video above should be the tenor mandola whereas baritone mandola or octave mandola is the mandocello.

I play a CGDA-tuned tenor guitar (Kala) as well as mandolin for Irish trad. I love both instruments tho separated tuning is a bit challenging.

Nice lesson. I play mandola and also tenor banjo. I have a five string tenor tuned FCGDA. Capoed at the 2nd fret it is like a cittern GDAEB. All the best with your playing and teaching.

You can start out by thinking of it like putting a tiny little capo on a mandolin - yes, those do exist - but going downward instead of up!
@kermitraviolino10654 жыл бұрын
Hi @MandoLessons Would you say that the mandola is a good compromise between the mandolin percussive sound and the octave mandolin bright sound?
@ondrejkral2093 жыл бұрын
I tuned my mandola same like my octave mandolin (GDAE) just an octave lower
@ised-52395 жыл бұрын
Mandola is the tenor member of the mandolin family like tenor banjo which is the tenor member of banjo family and also tuned cgda.
@ised-52394 жыл бұрын
So if you can play mandola you can play the tenor banjo and tenor guitar as well due to same tuning.

And mandolins are the alto voice and soprano voice is the piccolo mandolin of Weber.

I see on another video that you have an Eastman OM. Do you have a strap setup you like for the OM? I have a strap thru the headstock, that I do not like. I tried a strap for the OM like you have on the collings mandola, and that does not work, it is far too headstock heavy. Any suggestions on holding or strapping the Eastman OM welcome.

Hi! Thanks for the demo! I'm playing on a bad mandolin now and I'm hesitating between buying a mandola or a good mandolin... and I'v been thinking about buying a mandola and use a capo on the 7th fret sometimes to use it as a mandolin. Does it sound like a good idea to you?
@boriscat19994 жыл бұрын
You should buy whatever instrument that you love. If you like the sound of a mandola, then get one. Your enthusiasm will keep bringing you back to practicing. If you're used to four-finger closed position on mandolin, then you probably won't need a capo on your mandola. I use a small banjo capo made by Paige on my mandola and tenor guitar, but not usually on the 7th fret. I might capo to the 2nd fret to get DAEB tuning and have some different open chord voicings (look at a mandolin fingering chart, and move to the next fifth on the circle of fifths. G chord becomes a D chord)

It can be done on a 16" or less scale length mandola. Use the GDA from a mandola set and a 9 or 9.5 for the high E. Might require a new nut and some setup though.
