Struggling with OCD is hard because I always feel like I need to engage with intrusive thoughts and make sure it's not true. Good reminder video here..but I will admit this skill of separating myself from my thoughts is crazy difficult.

What if it's intrusive thoughts when you're in the middle of sex? What do you do then? Continue or stop? (It's not really being afraid just disgusting stuff like thinking about your family during it I dunno)

What I do is when having thoughts, this happened with my gf too so I can relate, I’ll think the thought but I won’t give myself reasons as to why it isn’t true or why it doesn’t matter how disgusting it is. It’s just a thought so I continue doing whatever I’m doing. Being mindful and meditating can help but I haven’t practiced as much as I need to.

see them as irrelevant.. ignore them.. apparently, my monkey brain/dogs said this, apparently... there are no inherent bad thoughts, you simultaneously create your reality all the time.. if your convinced a thought is true (even though its highly unlikely) and that thought actually happens (simply by coincidence, and slight influence), then its probably because you made it a self-fulfilling propecy.. we need alternative ways of viewing a thought... by which case the thought becomes irrelavant background thought by default... just like haha id like to see that...

Mark Freeman Thank you for the reply. You are the first video author who’s ever replied to me in a post. The worst part about OCD is that loved ones can’t comprehend how hard these compulsive reactions to the thoughts are to control. Do you have a video that articulates this difficulty? If not, it would be a greatly educational to have a video for the wife or husband of someone dealing with OCD. They get highly frustrated by our compulsions because they can’t comprehend how hard they are to stop doing. You get the good old “just stop” you have control lecture. They have no clue about the impending doom feeling that goes along with “not doing.” 😂 We even know we should stop but we don’t which is so hard to articulate.
@everybodyhasabrain
@everybodyhasabrain 5 жыл бұрын
@@ludvikjerabek I actually encourage people not to try to get understanding. It quickly becomes a barrier, like trying to get any feeling. A big part of OCD is trying to get feelings: trying to get safety, get relief, get rid of thoughts, etc. It's much more useful to shift the focus to giving. We can give understanding. We can give compassion. We can give ourselves a way out of these challenges by cutting out compulsions and changing how we interact with the stuff in our heads

I think thoughts are just unconcious happening without our command. And concious thinking happens with our command. If i havent decided to think of something then its just the mind doing its thing. Can't thank you enough for the work that you do. Your videos have helped give me a major breakthrough in my therapy. I am definetly starting to walk away from the man in the street but some days he shouts louder than others and I just can't help but cross the road for an argument. The path to recovery, as far as I can see, is not a straight one.
@everybodyhasabrain
@everybodyhasabrain 4 жыл бұрын
That's great you're finding them useful on your adventures! The path can be winding, but we can learn as we adventure. It really helped me to recognize I can help myself not cross the road for an argument. One of the most useful things to learn was that I often ran across for a discussion if I liked what that person on the street was shouting. But that's just how I made it more difficult to walk away when I didn't like what they were saying. So it was useful to recognize that I don't need to engage with them around anything. My values can help me keep walking where I want to go.

That's called pure "o" OCD, and yes, there are some videos on it! Even pure o OCD has compulsions, it's just mostly mental. Engaging with your thoughts, using counter thoughts (evidence against the bad though,) etc, are compulsions. So is seeking reassurance. Ruminating is also a compulsion. But it's hard because this OCD isn't as talked about as much, but it's still OCD. It's just not typical portrayed and it's not something others see.

Hi Mark! I would like to ask you a question. I'm trying to be as much mindful as possible during the day. When a thought pops up in my mind, I gently focus my awareness on the present moment. Meditation is really helping me with this process. The fact is that sometimes I feel these waves of anxiety or guilt or sudden negative thoughts and I shift my attention on reality as soon as I can. I'm a little bit afraid that this might be a thought suppression. Just wanted to know your opinion on this. Thanks

I have a theory that this stems from growing up with narcissisticly abusive parents from an early age, people who frequently invalidated my feelings, galighted me, bullied me, and caused me to doubt myself. The "voice" in my head could be reflections of my father's voice that is still bullying me subconsciously and OCD is an effort to try to go through extensive lengths to "prove him wrong" or make him listen to me as a childhood survival mechanism for love and acceptance. For me, it seems to be rooted in a fear of being misunderstood along with a very logical personality.
@everybodyhasabrain
@everybodyhasabrain 4 жыл бұрын
It's very common that there are experiences in the past or present that have hurt and the brain is just trying to help us bring some control and certainty to the world. Often, when working on recovery, we can do work to show the brain that we're in a different place now and we can practice trusting ourselves to handle things, it doesn't have to do all of this stuff to control and react anymore, but we understand where that's coming from.

I am also stuck in the state of "testing" intrusive thoughts to see if they are true. This "research/testing" is a part of who I am and has made me the successful individual I am today. How do I distinguish WHEN to research/test these voices and spend time dissecting them, vs. when to disregard them? The "What-If" fears keep coming back if I don't engage in research. Hmm. I suppose it's the FEAR associated with the intrusive thoughts that needs to go, and not necessarily the passion and love for logic, testing, and research.

It's very common that we believe compulsions are part of who we are and they've helped us. It's this Stockholm Syndrome thing that happens with these challenges. I would approach anger as an outcome. There's stuff that comes before it that's more useful to look at. Was I holding onto unhealthy expectations and desires to control things I don't control, and judging lots of experiences as wrong and bad and meaning things they don't mean, so now I'm very naturally angry? The issue is not the anger, then, but all of the compulsions I was doing that cultivated.

This is a good video and I just watched it again after some month back. I tend to 'forget' the useful tips you bring up in your various videos and had to go back to remind myself of them.. Not sure if this is healthy though. When I feel like the ocd thoughts are winning over me again, I sort of felt lost about the approach I need to take. Yes, mindfulness is the way to go, but I just can't seem to apply it for some reason when I'm too inside my head. Seems like going in circles - getting the hang of things and then falling back to my usual unhealthy compulsions and then reading up on how to be mindful, before finally getting back on my feet. How do I sustain that mindfulness approach?

I tried putting the various tips or mindsets I need to adopt into notes which I would refer to when I feel beaten, but somehow they just fail to work after awhile. It's like my mind don't seems to learn or get it. What should I do?

Something that's very helpful is practicing healthy skills before things get difficult. You mentioned having notes there when you feel beaten, but you're already beaten at that point. So that's like getting instructions on how to exercise when you're already exhausted--it's very difficult to exercise then. Mindfulness is a skill for every moment of our lives. It can help to practice when things are going well so we don't end up getting beaten. It helped me to approach things proactively and understand how to cut out the compulsions that would take me way off into problems.

Thanks Mark for all these educational videos and they have really opened my eyes but I would like to know that is it ok to watch your videos regularly and even the same videos again and again.Which usually happens when I encounter a serious set back and when I need a motivation to get back up? Because I start thinking where did I go wrong..and then again I watch videos to learn more about OCD..and One more thing does my life have to be focused on beating ocd ? like finding compulsions in the tiny tiny areas of my life all the time and resisting them ?

Hi there! I had a question about the thought process I go through when judging thoughts. When I am in a social setting and I see something I don't like or hear something I don't like, I tend to start thinking about it and analyzing what it could mean. I tend to think that it can somehow end up threatening my relationship with someone. Wouldn't these kind of thoughts also be a defense mechanism? I think negatively about a situation so that IF the results turn out to be undesirable, I am not disappointed in the end and I already expected the worst. p.s thank you so much for putting these videos out and taking the time to really help out other people. I really appreciate it and I am sure that everyone else does too!

Checking and judging stuff like that is a common compulsion. It'll be more useful to shift the focus to growing the things you want to build in life instead of chasing reassurance about whether you thought a thought or not.

When you try to ignore an intrusive thought, does the pressure build up and feel impossible to do? And when you let go of the ignoring and react the 'normal' bad way it feels like a relieve?
