Years ago , a kind fisherman at a boat ramp gave me a big handful of small trot line hooks. The larger eye allows me to slip it over the barb of the spinnerbait hook perfectly. I rig it free floating like you. Works like a charm. Im gonna use milk jug from now on though. Thanks Randy.

Good tip. I’ve used the milk-jug plastic for a long time. Instead of snipping them small with scissors, I use a punishing tool to pre-make them perfectly round. Making 100pc. takes less than 25min. and they last me forever… and they never perish like the tubing.

A lot of walleye fisherman use worm harnesses and just have a free hanging small octopus hook as a trailer hook on some floro. I wonder if it would work with spinnerbaits for bass too.

Great video Randy! I was waiting on a great spinner bait tip, by far my favorite bait, hope to see more on this subject, I fish most tournaments at night in warm months, and I love a night Time spinner bite with a big Colorado blade, like to see a video on trailers thanks pal!!!
@seizedcarcass84402 жыл бұрын
I use a 2/0 gamakatsu trailer hook. I have it hooked on with a hook all, just one tab on the top of the hook. Makes it able to swing freely on the main hook and less likely for fish to throw it or for it to get snagged.
@shawnhammack53022 жыл бұрын
I never use a trailer hook on a spinnerbait. In my experience spinnerbait with no trailer hook is one of the top strike to catch ratio lure i use. In the past I felt like the trailer was causing them not to get the bait as deep in there mouth therefore I ended up hooking alot with just the trailer hook making it appear as if it was helping. However if I don't use a trailer hook my hookup ratio was still very high. With that said maybe because my trailer hook was too large like you say. Now sometimes I find they are biting the blades and you wind up hooking them under the chin ( because the engulfed the blades without the hook) if this is happening I could see a trailer hook helping and the smaller one is probably the way to go.
@guad5122 жыл бұрын
I never use a trailer hook either. I trim the skirt a little and use a 3.8 - 4.3 swimbait and they seem to really hone in on that swimbait? Like you said…great hook to land ratio and weedless!
@mr.skeptical30712 жыл бұрын
Yes, sometimes they will hit the trl. Hook up and over the main hook. Bit it'll definitely help with short strikers
@guad5122 жыл бұрын
@@mr.skeptical3071 I agree, but if they’re short striking or slapping, then it’s time to switch the bait or retrieve?

I use a hole punch with a milk jug or coffee can lid and pre punch a zip lock bag full to keep in the box. We used to fish what we called matties and used these keepers for the swivel holding the blade on the hook.

Randy - as always great stuff and FINALLY subscribed and mashed the “like” button. I am sure that you have tried countless versions of trailer hook configurations and would love to here about the ones that haven’t worked as hoped or perhaps technique specific. Like many of the others here, would also really like to hear about your insight on trailer hooks and plastic/pork trailers.
@billlorenz66232 жыл бұрын
I've never been a fan of trailer hooks either. I usually trim a little bit off the skirt if they start nipping at it.
@thomasroach39652 жыл бұрын
In cold water the bass are not as aggressive and are easing up and sucking it in. Keep the wire from being a weed guard by making sure it is open enough. Then put either swim bait or pork chunk (wish they still made an uncle josh # 11)on there. This way when they ease up and suck it in they have the hook in their mouth. That bigger plastic or pork has more resistance than the wire lead and skirt which helps them suck the bait. I 100 percent believe millions have been won with # 11 uncle josh pork chunk on spinnerbaits

Never use trailer hook in heavy cover. I do in open water when burning. I, too, use a smaller hook. I choose my spinnerbaits, carefully based upon the hook.
@jamesbentley93562 жыл бұрын
Agree with the small hook. But not free swinging. Fishing around cover, free swinging hangs up too much. Use stiff plastic tubing, the only time I’ve brought the spinnerbait in with the hook sideways was if a fish hit it and knocked the trailer hook sideways. More leverage to throw it? Probably, but I’ll risk that to avoid being hung-up and having no chance of even hooking up.

The problem I have with trailer hooks is taken them out of a bass mouth. One hook in one in area of the mouth and the other hook in another area; taking one out the other sticks, you start to remove the other and then the first hook sticks on another area, etc. etc., 😱🤬! makes for a big pain in the Butt, although they real work on those short miss days.

A simple hole punch does a much better job punching discs out of the plastic strips. Just punch them out at home and put them in a pill bottle so you spend less time on the water farting around with stuff. To be efficient and effective on the water you must be prepared first!
