@Yesenia Kutz but you don’t necessarily have to use a “clarifying” shampoo to get rid of silicones. Any bar of soap or any shampoo with sulfates in it will clarify. And many sulfate shampoos nowadays don’t make your hair feels stripped because they have conditioners in threm.

My hair has looked much better since I stopped using sulfates and silicones (I have curly hair). Remember, silicones stop moisture from penetrating into the hair for many people. They do work for some people, but most curly girls I’ve heard have said that no silicones and no sulfates (except for clarifying) has been way better. The cgm exists for a reason. Plus there’s a ton of affordable silicone/sulfate free products.

I have been doing curly hair routine for two years. I have spent a lot on high end hair products. Honestly, it didn’t improve or change the quality of my hair. Mainly no longer bleaching, no longer flat ironing and managing stress is really why I have healthy, curly hair. It is ridiculous listening to 20 something YT influencers without any chemistry or cosmetology backgrounds who dye their hair warn against the evils of silicones. Thank you Mel for being a voice of reason.

@@angelli7950 I've seen some lines, like the Moroccan oil curl products, that leave out silicones in the conditioner but do include it in the styling products. This way you're basically sealing everything off with a silicone product in the end once your hair is already moisturized, and not worrying about removing them until the next wash. Of course there are also plenty of great products with no silicones in them, it's all about what works best for you!

Beginning of this year I went back to the "horrible" products that are not designed for our curls. My hair has changed so much for the good. No more flakes, my hair is growing back, smells great, I can even go without washing my hair for more days. I even got a balayage done and it doesn't even feel damaged. I feel like so much of this "debate" is dependent on how an individual's hair and body chemistry reacts to products. I have coarse, low density, wavy to curly hair that is REALLY sensitive to product buildup. I started out my curly journey still using products with silicones, because I felt that if I was clarifying often enough I wouldn't have issues. My hair got SO dry and unmanageable with every wash day being a bad result. I ended up avoiding silicones for a few wash days just to see what would happen and my hair sprung back to life. I tend to use shampoos free of harsh sulfates now, but clarify with a stronger one every 3 washes or so. And no more silicones in any of my conditioners or stylers. All that being said, I think it's important to identify that silicones are not the worst thing for hair, because we see influencers like Mell using them successfully and with great results. But, it's also important to remember that your hair is UNIQUE and you won't ever have exactly the same results as another person. I can't use silicones personally, but I would never shame someone who does.

I'm the exact opposite. My hair is very thick and I have a lot of hair. Silicones help me keep it together with good volume but not puffy. However, I only have silicones in one of my products which is my conditioner and it's like the 15th ingredient listed on it so there's very little silicone on it.

It's like any other ingredient - it doesn't work for everyone but that doesn't make it bad. Some people avoid coconut oil, aloe vera, shea butter, etc, and everyone's okay with that. Some people (myself included) find silicones don't work for their hair, but some swear by them *shrug*

Perfect video! ❤️ Small adendum: there is still not a consensus among trichologists and chemists as to whether sulfate-free shampoos are capable of removing heavy petroleum derivates, who bond to the hair more strongly than silicones, or not. Those derivates are: hexadecane, mineral oil, liquid paraffin, C-[number] isoparaffin, vaseline, hydrogenated polyisobutene. If you’re sticking to sulfate-free shampoos, it’s prudent to use them infrequently or not at all 💕

I don't regret it though, I've now worked out a routine which is somewhere in between. I alternate between gentle and sulfate shampoos and occasionally use leave in products with silicones. The best part about going silicone free is the discovery of protein based conditioners and hair masks and that has worked wonders for me. I will continue using silicone free conditioners and silicone leave in products.

After this video from Mell, I went to the box of all the hair stuff I had that evicted from the bathroom when I started on my own curly journey, found the ones that had silicones, and brought out a few to try again and see if they help. No results yet, since my hair hasn't needed to be washed yet. Minus the silicone products, my hair has been a knotted, greasy birds nest since before Christmas. What's the point of following the curly girl idea, if your hair always looks terrible!! I'm a 2a,b,and c wavy with hair long enough to sit on - thicker products weigh my hair down and make it look greasy....plus, having wet hair 9 hours after I get out of the shower, is just getting ridiculous. I'd chop everything back to a pixie, but my husband prefers my long, loose curls.

Fantastic video Mel! I discovered the CGM community at the start of quarantine. I started following it and yep my curls have never looked better! BUT I also found your videos and started following your methods (I'm more like Amanda's hair type) and techniques (hello, amazing diffusing methods and going glycerin free during these humid af Ontario summers) and my hair became even better!!! Your content still had science backed, sourced information, practical techniques comparing them side by side, and you don't demonize certain products, lines, or ingredients (as almost all CGM people do on instagram). I have since decided to stop following the CGM method (which I was cheating anyways, I love my Bumble & Bumble UV primer hehehe). It's an AMAZING starting point for people who literally have zero clue when it comes to taking care of their curls, BUT the CGM community is mainly 30-something+ Karen's who love to demonize ingredients and SWEAR BY a or b and isolate one another if they break the rules *too much* to be considered CGM. And speaking of Karen's, has anyone noticed how white the CGM community is? I also gained a ton of knowledge from Black women who are obv the queens of curls but I feel like old (and young) Karen's can't wrap their head around learning from black women or people with a different curl type other than 3a-3c? And I don't know why? Seriously, the CGM method should just be called the type 3 method since they isolate themselves so much and I don't want to be apart of a community like that. Do type 3 and type 4 have different needs, absolutely, but the foundations are the same and it's usually in subtle ways that we learn anyway from these blogs (ex., type 4 can use heavier emollients than type 3 and or in larger amounts). Also, I see aaaaaalll of you CGM bloggers who promoted Black owned indie brands and proceeded to not use/talk about them? Black owned brands can be used on white hair too! I don't know, I just like how Mel's content being science based and put to test alongside her sister who also has different hair is applicable to everyone if you have basic comprehension and reading skills and can see past the microcosm that is the CGM community ;)

In 1989 I had a breakdown when my shampoo stopped lathering. Curly hair shampoo did not exist so I used a formula for dry hair. I had been using it for a long time. The beauty industry back then had no idea how to moisturize dry hair. They put dimethicone in both the conditioner AND the shampoo. Over time, and the keyword here is 'time', the buildup on my scalp became so bad that not only did my shampoo stop lathering, when I scratched my head I got a white powdery/creamy substance under my fingernail. The days when I was a teen (late 80's/early 90's) and battling curly hair were horrid. I was so frustrated with the haircare industry for not putting in the proper time and effort to create effective products for curly hair. There would be no good products and advice for curly hair until 2000. Today's hair products have come such a long way from the 80's and 90's and they're still not perfect. But I no longer have product build up problems because I don't use dimethicone on my hair.

I was using a sulfate free shampoo with dimethicone (Creme of Nature Moisture & Shine Shampoo with Argan Oil) and a buch of conditioners with all the silicones in them 😂 when the build up started I thought it was dandruff (I've never experienced dandruff in my life so I didn't know how to recognize it) and I would only see that "dandruff" the day they washed my hair at the beauty salon, after a blowout... So after about 10 months my hair was falling like crazy and after a research I learned about why we do need sulfates in shampoo. So I had to cut the 3 long hair strands I was left with, got a pixie cut and now I stay away from both, non water soluble silicones and sulfates

I have been watching you since you started and what a ride it has been! You always seem to answer my questions before I even have to ask. I was getting so tired of standing in the shampoo aisle getting overwhelmed and frustrated. Before my curly hair journey, I used to always say to use a variety of products. I may not have known the exact breakdown that I should have (Thanks for that Mel!), but it seemed my hair did pretty good with what I was doing. After almost 2 years on my curly hair journey, I have developed a painful scalp which I think may be more auto-immune related that anything else. I have had to start using T/Gel to combat the pain which has helped. I have been stressing about the fact that this shampoo is not curly girl friendly. (It smells terrible too.😕) Thanks for the helpful information! 😊🧡

Different hair types need different things. My hair was drying out and stopped growing when I was using a line with sulfate free shampoo and a silicone conditioner. It was so frizzy and disgusting... But it took a year to get to that point. My hair is super thick and coarse and low porosity and it has done beautifully without sulfates or silicones for over a year now. It looks amazing. This experiment would be interesting to watch with different hair types and ethnicities.

I’m so happy for this video. My curly hair looked its best when I was using a shampoo and conditioner with all the bad ingredients, and has been rubbish since I switched to “good” ingredients. Sulfate free and silicone free can kiss my bad hair

I started my curly journey with a CGM group that was saying silicone are the devil and not to use them...but my hair since watching you and following your methods, I call them Mel-isms, are making my hair way better than before. My question is how often should I change my products? With each season or with what my hair needs tjat wash day?? Love watching you girl!!! Wish I could have an appointment with you for my hair needs!!! ❤❤❤

That's why I love you and trust you. you always search and educate yourself. I read about that topic months ago, that silicones can be removed with sulfate free shampoos, even I experienced that with my hair. I went for months with silicones in my products and with sulfate free shampoo because I have a dry scalp and my hair was fine and never experienced buildups. it's been almost 20 years since the CGM came out and people still believe it. A lot can happen in 20 years.

INEED TO THANK YOU MELL honestly if not for you and jayme jo I wouldn’t know what to do with my hair so thank you million times you’re a lifesaver, my hair used to be frizzy ,messed up and damaged even though I have virgin hair it was because of the lack of knowledge I had about what products to put in my hair I HAD NO idea about the word sulfate in shampoo and silicon in conditioner and protein Balance and needing to put leave in conditioner or a mousse , also because my mom was the one doing my hair as kid she didn’t know how to deal with it and my hair was at that time a 2A I think or maybe like wavy with all the relaxers it had, but know thank god I’m 17 and know what to and not to put in my hair , it’s 3A to 3B now and it took me a while to figure it out and restore my hair I can never thank you enough for letting me love my hair and curls ❤️❤️❤️

God bless you! I’ve been investigating hair products about shampoos and conditioners for months and have noticed that Sulfate frees are the most recommended, but I have also noticed that they are more complicated to use. You have to follow up with scalp scrubs to take away the build up the sulfate free has caused and wash your hair less etc. I miss my old routine and might just go back to it. Thanks again!!

I wanted to ask if using regular shampoos twice is the same as a clarifying shampoo?
@ManesByMell4 жыл бұрын
shampooing twice will definitely give a better and more thorough clean, but clarifying/chelating shampoos do have specific ingredients to remove things like mineral buildup. I covered this in a previous video all about hard/soft water, check it out to learn more about if your shampoo has these special ingredients! kzbin.info/www/bejne/bXSpipl3gZKcqbs

Thank you for the clarity. I believe sulfates are too harsh to use for my hair because i don't get a lot of buildup, but i thought sulfate free would not cleanse my hair properly. I absolutely LOVE THIS!! I moderate a FB group for wavy type hair. We're definitely NOT strict CGM , but sadly we do still have tons of people who still want to follow strict CG, no matter WHAT info we put out.. I personally use a sulfate very regularly .. but I cant tell a difference in using a sulfate vs a NON sulfate shampoo either... but my absolute FAVORITE chelating shampoo is Ouidad water works, and it's a sulfate... I've found that silicones do weigh down my fine hair, if I use too much... but I still have some of my favorite products that do contain PEG water soluble silicones.... I'm a researcher at heart, so I LOVE to learn the science-y side behind the ingredients, but too many people DONT, and then just take everyones word for what's good for their hair, or what will work.....
@owainh13474 жыл бұрын
Love this comment! What are some of your other favourite products? :)
@randipoe94004 жыл бұрын
@@owainh1347 I try SOOOOO many, so I can give good, and informed, product recs to the group. I will NOT recommend a product based on what someone else says about it... But lately, uve found that I've been reaching for Ouidad curl play amplifying spray, Giovanni direct weightless leave or curlsmith weightkess airdry cream / inahsi rock your curls cream (i mix before hand, so i don't have to layer them).... i also really like EvolvH total styling cream and their Super Curl cream, followed by treluxe HI! Def gel or texture ID curls custard. And for gels I LOOOOOVE buosilk rock hard gelee (its probably my go-to hard hold gel) or curlsmith inshower style fixer.... I have so many other products that I love, but these have become some of my favs
