In this video we look at the business behind the world's oldest profession in Medellin, Colombia, - a place that unfortunately has developed a bad reputation due to the supply and demand of this profession as well as drugs and crime.

Adventure Elliot is a bilingual travel vlogger (English and Spanish) with a particular interest in the Spanish speaking world. I enjoy taking adventures - big or small - and my goal is to show the Spanish speaking world 1 video at a time.
The goal of my channel is simple yet complex: I want to document and share authentic & educational content of anything related to Adventure Travel, Geography, & Language in the Spanish-speaking world. It's kind of a loaded topic, but it allows me to never exhaust my creative outlets. The truth is, I've always been extremely passionate about what I'm doing on my channel, but I never properly documented it when I started adventuring as a younger man in my college years. I've made over 150 KZbin videos in both English and Spanish, and I have aspirations to make 1000s more. If that sounds interesting to you, join the community and follow me along the way.. After all, we're just getting started.

I am from the States and when I first arrived in Medellin I had no problem telling people where I was from. But when I seen how many Americans were getting robbed and killed I started saying I was from Haiti or Belize. It seriously kept me from being a target. You have to be very street smart in Medellin if you want to make it out of there as an American.

my folks moved to Medellin in 2006 after living in America for 40 years. They lived in Bogota in the 1950s when my father was a stock broker there. that was 2007 visit was my first trip back to Medellin since the extremely violent 1980s. I was stunned at the transformation of Medellin. it was like I was walking around in Coconut Grove Florida. The El Tesoro shopping mall was nicer than anything in the United States. there was some visible poverty like any major city but it was contained to the out of the way neighborhoods where the police don't have a presence. Downtown Medellin was full of tourists. THE RIGHT KIND of tourists. Investors, businessmen, families. Then came the gringos who can't get laid at home without paying for it and have turned Medellin into the wrong part of Thailand. I can't believe what a downgrade in the overall environment after such a miraculous mid 2000s revival since the drug violence of the 1990s. The streets you recorded I walked myself and they were so clean 17 years ago. There were children playing in Botero plaza. No loitering of pimps and peddlers. Man this is Sad. literally everything is for the worse compared to those Uribe years. P. S. none of those street smart people believe for a second that you are from Spain. They've been listening to the Gringo accent for literally ever. It sounds absolutely NOTHING like your pretty good Spanish. They know gringos walking around by themselves are 90% up to something and can spot them before they even utter a word by their shorts and shoes. And that guy with girl at the vending stands wasn't trying to sell you coke although I don't doubt he knows how to get if. He was being a sarcastic 50 year old paisa about all gringos looking for blow and hookers. It's hard to pick up if you're not a native speaker but the sarcasm in how he said cocaine cocaine was classic passive aggressive of this area.
@AdventureElliot

Very insightful comment. I totally believe you. I’m not revealing anything about Medellin that isn’t known, I’m just trying to teach people about culture and society. And I know that they can spot gringos a mile away but I only said one word to those guys and they asked if I was from Spain so that caught my attention. And the guy with the coke comment I knew was all b.s. but I’m making this video for a western audience who finds that stuff funny. I’ve learned through my travels that gringos are bobos and el Que vive, vive del bobo.. y no soy un bobo which is why I play that game with these people who like you said are passive aggressive. Just wait for the Cartagena video.. that place is something else. Colombia in spite of all this is such a wonderful place - but the political and social situation needs to improve. So much poverty and desperation leads to an aggressive and predatory approach on so many levels and it’s exhausting. I still enjoy my time there when I’m not filming .. un saludo

@AdventureElliot I will bet you dollars to Donuts that the guy asked if you were from Spain because with your beard and complexion your sporting the look of many Spanish soccer players at the moment. Funny coincidence while I was reading your comment there was another video in the background playing of that one Navy SEAL with a huge podcast Shawn Ryan talking about how he left the military and moved to Medellin to do a bunch of blow every day. Growing up in America I don't think your average American has any idea about the impact of American drug use on every day life in Colombia and México. All those prostitution rings are controlled by the Cartel connected organizations that have brute force authority over law enforcement and small ball local government. that authority is built on weapons acquired with profits from selling drugs to Americans and Europeans.

No offense but if the economic situation improved for the average person then there would be fewer women selling their wares to gringos which ultimately would reduce the flesh tourism. Please heap some blame on the Colombia government for failing their people. Only poverty can point a gun at a woman's head to go sell herself for money. The gringos are only responding to the market forces available.

I'm an expat that has been in Medellin for 6 years. This is an informative vid but a few things were left out. First El Centro is easy to get too. The metro train stops there. Having been there twice during the day it depicts the day time, you really do not belong there at nite as a different type of people come out once the sun goes down. Shown was the street behind the church, this is where a lot of prositutes hang out along the church wall. Whenever you see a number of girls hanging around the entry way in front of these cheap hotels don't be surprised in you get a huge smile from these gals. Cell phone theft is a major problem here and guess where a lot of these phones end up ? Yup, right here ! Other than the park and church there is really nothing else to see there.

I lived in Colombia a long time ago back while the war was still winding down. It was incredible. There were no other gringos so tourism hadn’t created the industry of robbing foreigners. There was already ample prostitution. The Colombians were so stoked to see an American in their country. It was heaven. When I left, it was with the intention of coming back and living out the rest of my life there. Over the years I went back for visits several times. I saw more and more tourism increasing over the decades. It seemed like it became wrought with all the same problems that tourism creates. I’m now retired and looking for a country to expatriate to but I haven’t gone back to Colombia. I don’t want to worry about getting targeted. I lived for many years all over South America and I never had any problems but lots of other travelers I met did have problems. I saw lots of shit go down. Then I was a cop for my career. I’m just sick of having to watch my back. I prefer SE Asia now. Though Latinas are something special, I was married to a Colombiana for over a decade. They are a lot to deal with.

I lived and worked in Colombia for about 5 years in the early 2000's.. Im a gringo and speak fluent Spanish. It was always 3rd world and I saw a lot of shady stuff including quite a few robberies. Luckily I was only a victim of a bag snatch during the time I was there. I was there again about 3 years ago in Medellin.. It is so much worse now.. Im not going back and dont recommend it as a place to go. So much crime and if you are a gringo you are being stalked all the time.. You will never be fully integrated there. Yes, Its exciting, but not fun in the long term..

My friend, no mean to scare you, but in Latin America, you walk, you feel safe, you see people friendly, man do not fall for it, someone could be following you without you knowing, waiting for the right moment to grab your camera, your belongings. Or they could follow you to the place you are staying, you may be a mark, they will wait for the right moment, be extra careful. Best policy in latin America, is never to reveal your itinerary, so they can not plan where and when to get you, always be ambiguous, about places and timing, never reveal your plans or when are you are leaving the country, be smart Elliot! Seems extreme, but that is how we locals operate, always ready! You take care, be safe.

I disagree with 4:30... I as a man I judge the levels of intellect and integrity of men that buy these services, then so to shall I reasonably judge the women who offer the services. Choices are choices made, circumstance is not a reason to do a thing, but an excuse. I don't have to agree that it's okay, it's not. And this said from a non religious man by the way, I don't pretend morality nor piety. From an integrity, public health, and pragmatic perspective world view: the whole thing is gross, and that's that. You as an individual are always free to take how ever much Copium you need to get through your day but reality is reality. Just because it's normalized doesn't mean it's acceptable. And it shouldn't be. Rest of the points you made were reasonable.
@mediocreman2
@mediocreman2 Ай бұрын
2:33 Well that's your first problem is thinking that prostitution is 'strange'. It happens everywhere, and just because it's hidden better in more developed countries doesn't mean it doesn't exist. And the overwhelming majority of women choose the job. People shouldn't say they are for "women's rights" while also stating that women are being taken advantage of. Most prostitutes are of legal age and are not coerced. I mean like the high majority. I've been all over the world and the 'trafficking' that people talk about is only happening at very high levels of society, in other words people with tons of money. I bet that isn't even 1% of prostitutes.
