Fun Fact: In this part of comics Allen was actually the one narrating, but changing this a sci-fi pulp style narrator works as Allen is kinda made in the style to characters like Flash Gordon, Captain Future, and John Carter of Mars. It’s pretty neat.

The way mark threw away his toys- I don’t think he’s self conscious- I just think the last time he was with a group of people in an apartment environment- they all ended up slaughtered, and mark probably felt responsible for their deaths, and thought he needed to grow up, and seek the responsibility after the damage his dad caused and to become a grow up adult fast, mature, so he could become a greater superhero.
