Real interesting talk that I'm sure I'll be coming back to several times. I've been working on a tabletop RPG that's meant to have a lot of player-driven narrative and such, but it can be difficult to steer newer players (my intended demographic) into being creative like this. Great points.

Perhaps its a difference of country/culture, but the very first "creative game" that came to mind for me was MadLibs. While one person could do it as a sort of word-puzzle, getting a group of kids to throw out suggestions for each "blank", and then reading the resulting (absurd) passage/nano-fiction was great fun, and very collaborative. (It could also be competitive, if you purposely tried to stump other people trying to make a cohesive story.)

MadLibs is not a thing here in the UK. I am 36 year old British game designer, and I am only vaguely aware of the existence of MadLibs, and then only because I take a professional interest in games.

@@benjaminwenham7759 Good to know! I wonder if the UK has a similar word game, only under a different brand (or as a purely oral/casual game).

that was absolute gold, thank you so much! This is what the best talks are: distilling tons of experience and real-world examples into a few general rules and techniques that others can also use.

Interesting. I would like to mention if someone is making research about involving players (or people in general) the Groupe de Recherche d Arts Visuels. They used to ask people to play games in the streets of Paris in the 50s or 60 I do not remember. And they made other things. Making games inside museum very early.

pretty good content, the presentation seems very rushed tho. I can understand the time pressure, but it should be part of the design for the presentation to consider time limits. shorten the text if you dont have time to go over them.
