I like that you do the science side of things. A lot of people talk about what works, but not many know how or why what theyre doing, works.

I keep meaning to get back to it. The videos take a lot of time to make and I burned out. But I’ll be back, probably at a reduced frequency.

Legit, was using KZbin looking into iodine, the coral banded shrimp I have had for a year that just finished a horrific molt losing all legs but one leg all of his claws two of his four entente and the other two are bent in freak angles and I know it’s almost 100% going to die but barely holding on. I’m externally bummed I never dosed iodine and never know about it till today when asking my local pet shop who specializes in saltwater shrimp and clowns. You vid was extremely informational and did shed light on my situation kinda sucks learning this way. Reality is my little buddy’s crippled because I didn’t do a water change during my normal schedule do to work and that probably is why he ran low on iodine along with the fact I don’t dose it

I hyper dose lugols in my paly gardens and it has dramatic effects on some species in terms of growth and polyp size. Doesnt do much for SPS in my opinion, but my utter chaos palys are the size of quarters.

How quickly did you notice this effect?

Would be cool if you did a video on acropora or Montipora, my friends tank crashed and he rushed to give me two small frags that had turned brown I read up on how to slowly fix the coloring and encourage growth but still not 100% understanding the Acro is growing fast but still brown and the monti is well... darker brown
@ReefMan6 жыл бұрын
Coloring up acropora has a lot to do with light, water parameters, and even maybe what you're feeding (amino acids, nitrate level in water, etc). Good luck! If they're growing well then that's step one!

There are absolutely no directions on lugols as a dip but only for dosing. i called brs and they said 1 drop per cup. Do you know if that is right? I have some corals that are dying and though that might help! Crazy thing is brs made a video of using it as a dip and how great it is but they say to follow directions closly but there are none!
@ReefMan3 жыл бұрын
I’ve never used it, but a search says 40 drops per gallon of saltwater for the dip. 19.2 cups per gallon, so that would be about 2 drops per cup. I think I’d err on the side of a lower dose, so one drop per cup of water seems safe to start with. Good luck!

Hi reef man love you videos, I have a large system and I would like to try and make a diy iodine solution any tips on where to start? Side not I have found over the years my systems have been able to deal with issues when I have been dosing iodine compared to when I haven’t been
@ReefMan2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I’d read about making solutions of potassium iodide and dosing with that. Luckily Iodine is pretty hard to overdose, so you have a built in safety margin. Good luck!

I have Iodine tincture 2.5% , can you advise instruction on using this for dosing and as a dip ?
@ReefMan3 жыл бұрын
Assuming it's just iodine and alcohol, you can use 1 cup of tank water and add 3 or 4 drops. You can then dip your corals for a few minutes in that mixture, maybe 3 minutes or so at a time.

How do you dose iodine? Can you use pharmacy iodine dropper? If so, how much? Thx
@ReefMan3 жыл бұрын
You can buy lugols iodine at some pharmacy stores. If you use something else you'd need to read the package to find out what is in it, and how much, and then do some math to figure out how much to dose to reach the concentration you want in your tank.

I bought the Lugol’s Iodine 2%. How do I know how much to dose?
@zackcav5 жыл бұрын
What is a practical schedule to dose this I heard that nitrates and organics like to bind it up quickly and in tanks with higher nutrients dosing once isn't going to benefit it as much and even daily might be necessary
@zackcav5 жыл бұрын
I would think just a daily dose of purple up would be beneficial if it uses iodine but I have no way to look at that.
@ReefMan5 жыл бұрын
I would suggest a daily small dose, whatever you need to achieve the proper level. I would recommend an actual iodine supplament rather than something you only think might have it

I have tested my tank and have high iodine and iodate but the iodide is spot on. I only dose potassium iodide, which I make myself from 99.9% potassium iodide. I have no idea where the iodine and iodate have come from can you please advise?
@ReefMan5 жыл бұрын
I would suggest it might be from your dosing. There a number of chemical reactions that take place in our tank, in our coral, bacteria, and the water itself. I would not be surprised to find that the KI you're dosing is forming some amount of iodine and iodate as it goes through these reactions. I note that the Seachem iodine dosing liquid is somehow "stabilized" against these reactions according to their website - I wonder if there's a better thing to be dosing vs pure KI. I do dose Iodine, but only need to do it rarely. Sorry, I know this isn't much help!

So, can I put a little table salt in my RODI top off water and get iodine in my tank that way?
@ReefMan5 жыл бұрын
You could, but I wouldn't recommend it without doing some tests first. Much safer to dose an iodine dosing solution so you know the concentration and all that.

Hi Can I use 99% pure Potassium Iodide in my reef tank or it has to be something specific and now I need to subscribe your channel. Plz reply, thanks
@ReefMan4 жыл бұрын
You should be able to. Obviously the higher the purity the better because you don't know what is in that other percent, but I would think lab grade 99% purity would work

3 of my tourches died ..all my water parameters are fine ..icp lab test says im very low in iodine..my question is..is it possible that low iodine in my tank for a long period time could've cause my corals to die ?.i have no other explinations..
