This video is an introduction to ionic bonding, which is one type of chemical bonding. Ionic bonds hold together metal and nonmetal atoms. In ionic bonding, electrons are transferred from a metal atom to a nonmetal atom, creating ions. These ions have opposite charge, so they stick together.

I noticed that in the beginning of the video. I have a question. In the video you mentioned that "Chloride" is the name of a Chlorine atom with a negative charge. You said that that's what sets the names chlorine and chloride apart. So my question is, does that mean that the chlorine atom in Hydrogen Chloride has a negative charge or is a negative ion? If so, how is that possible that the type of bond between the hydrogen and chlorine atoms is covalent?

What a great example at how to teach. I remember being at school and switching off because I couldn't understand what was being taught as important details were left out and that left gaps in building understanding. These lessons are brilliant because they are clear and give the necessary details which makes it easier to grasp and that builds a desire to learn more. I know some who want to teach their children at home and I will definetely point them to these videos of Tyler's.

Why is the clorine atom bigger than the sodium? I thought atoms (due to their amount of protons pulling their energylevels closer to the radius) were smaller from left to right.

Sandy, you are correct - a chlorine atom is smaller than a sodium atom, but a chloride ion is bigger than a sodium ion (because the sodium has lost its outermost electron shell when it makes an ion). So a solid plastic model cannot really show the sizes. But it is an excellent video nonetheless.
@riinuansper2690
@riinuansper2690 10 жыл бұрын
Actually when Cl recieves an electron from Na, than Cl changes from an atom to an anion and it gets much bigger in size during this change, because electrons repel, and when there are more electrons, the electrons will try to stay as far away from each other as possible. So there is an actual error in this video,because they drew the Cl atom about the same size as the anion... Anions are bigger than the corresponding atoms; cations are smaller than the corresponding atoms.

Sandy Keeton Chlorine is bigger due to its electronegativity.Electronegativity is the ability of an atom to attract the electrons towards itself in a chemical bond.Electronegativity of Sodium is 0.9 and electronegativity of Chlorine is 3.0

Chemistry is really difficult to understand, at least for me. I have some experience taking chemistry classes and I can only remember a very sweet teacher who made me understand a lot (that was over ten years ago). Until now, I haven't seen anything like that. Mr Dewitt is doing a very good job with these videos. I encourage everyone who needs to understand and learn in a simple way to support him. Thank you Tyler!!

Watched about a dozen videos of the same concept and none of the other ones explained it as effectively as you! I always wondered the chlorine vs chloride. Keep teaching so we can keep learning. Thank you!

Omgyou are such a great teacher. Our teacher is very smart, she just has no idea how to explain ANYTHING. You were able to explain in 7 minutes what took her several weeks. I wish u were my science teacher

Thank you so much for your help!!! The world needs more teachers like you, the way you explained this was incredible and allowed me to understand something I thought was too complicated for me in just 7 mins. I’m so grateful to live in a time when KZbin exists as textbooks really don’t work for me. Thank you again🙏🏽😊

i'm a chemical engineer and I must admit you're really good at teaching chemestry, you make it easy for everybody to understand. Of course it's not so easy anymore when you talk about bohr-lande and network energy, but for starters is really good
