In Noteability you CAN change the form of paper and add lines etc. Furthermore it has an inbuilt ruler, meaning if you draw a line and hold, it will make it completely straight. The same can be done with triangles, squares and circles. The same applies for highlighting, which makes it much more visually appealing when highlighting. Additionally I feel that the eraser tool on the Pencil is better, because you just double tap rather than flipping the pencil. This is faster and more convenient when taking handwritten notes imo.
@jaimehancock70483 жыл бұрын
Good video, but I recommend that you spend a little bit more time playing around with each app and learning its features before doing a comparison. There were several things I noticed about a couple of the apps. As has already been mentioned, Notability does offer a choice of different background papers. They also offer the ability to import or purchase linked PDF planners, calendars, etc. (So that if you click a link in the PDF it opens another section/tab of the PDF.) Notability has poor text editing abilities, and very poor RTL (right-to-left) support. While they offer handwriting-to-text conversion for most Latin alphabet based languages, they don't offer it for more complex scripts like Hebrew or Arabic. I use Notability for taking notes in a mixed language setting, (I'm a graduate student in Israel so I often have readings in either Hebrew or English, while the class discussion might be conducted in the other language.) I will handwrite Hebrew notes, but I don't attempt to type Hebrew in Notability because it will only left justify, not right justify. That's an easy fix, and I have written them about it, but they have not implemented that feature yet. Regardless, the ability to simultaneously record audio while writing notes, and have both synced to each other is the main reason I use Notability. I used to use OneNote for that feature on a Surface Pro, but the iPad's superior handwriting speed and recognition caused me to switch. I find the Surface Pro lags too much, and it makes my handwriting look like a preschool child when I'm trying to write quickly, while my handwriting on the iPad looks exactly the same as if I wrote on paper. OneNote is a much more powerful app than you let on. It offers research integration for students, an almost infinite workspace, the ability to quickly add space between things that you have already written, etc. You also did not mention, which is a huge omission, that OneNote on the iPad doesn't offer the ability to record audio while you take notes. The Windows version does, but the iPad version doesn't. Microsoft knows that if they offer feature parity between the Surface versions of their apps and the iPad versions of their apps, that more people would get the iPad. Seriously, there is no hardware or software limitation preventing them from adding the feature, and if you go to their OneNote features request page for iOS, you'll see that the most requested feature is audio recording while taking notes. But they refuse to offer it. Too bad. I actually prefer OneNote, but I like the handwriting experience on the iPad better. So I use Notability instead of OneNote. :( The video is well made, and I enjoyed it, but the content could use a little more polishing.

Something that I just thought of by someone asking me, is what's better "an iPad Pro or the Surface Pro 7?" When I began to think about that question, that automatically made me think of a pro's and con's list. It did not take me long to arrive to answer the person asking the question. What you have to realize, is that as great as the iPad Pro is, it's still an iPad at the end of the day. An iPad still runs a trimmed-down operating system that relies on apps. Whereas the Surface Pro 7 runs a full version of Windows, which has both an App Store, and you can download outside programs if you can't find what you're looking for in the Microsoft app store, on an iPad you can't. On an iPad, you are restricted to the app choices through the app store. This means, if what you are wanting to do, can not be accomplished through an app, then you are out of luck when it comes to working on an iPad. Also, the iPad does not support full screen when connected to an external display. Now some apps do support full-screen mode on an external display, but they can sometimes be unstable. On the Surface Pro 7, you do not have this issue. You can either set it to mirror your display or extend it to another screen and it will display in full screen. I had tried using an iPad as my primary work computer, but could not find an app for everything I do. Although Safari is supposed to be a full-functioning web browser, it does operate all the time as a full browser like Chrome. If you rely on Chrome extensions, you will not be able to replicate them on an iPad. As great as an iPad is, you have to really think about what your needs are? How can those needs be met? What is my budget and which device offers me the best value? If the work output outweighs the cost of the device, then you have your winner. Great video Noah.
@husainzaidi6274 жыл бұрын
Great Video, man! To the people who're complaining for a tablet being more expensive than a full-fledged computer - Many don't realize this, but if you're comparing prices of the compared devices, then also consider their integration with the ecosystem. On Notes app on iPad, the moment you take a note (handwritten or text) it instantly reflects on your Mac and your iPhone, no 3rd party installations, no lag, no refresh needed! And it works perfectly! You can argue that OneNote does the same, but for anyone who's tried using OneNote on 2-3 different devices will vouch how inconsistent its performance is.

The extra capability of surface functioning as a full laptop certainly is a much better device than ipad.

Other reviewers say using the Apple pencil feels like writing on glass, whereas it feels like writing on paper with the Surface Pen. Also, the Surface Pen is the same size as high-quality writing pens. The Apple Pencil, on the other hand, is over an inch longer, thinner, and doesn't have an eraser. For these two reasons, it CAN NOT mimic a real writing experience. Also, OneNote is optimized for SP7, not iPads (guess optimization only matters for Apple products). Finally, people use a very limited number of apps, so it doesn't matter if the Apple store has a billion apps (especially since the exact difference is never mentioned). As a fanboy, If Apple had fewer apps, you'd just claim that "Although MS has more apps, Apple has more quality apps."

1) u cna have matte screen protector 2) pen preference. Also, there's no "actual" pen sizes. There are even bigger / thinner / longer pens in the market.

@@RK-um9tu Paperlike is literally marketed for that and has been countlessly vouched for as having paper-like experience. Anything in space has a dimension, dont bullshit me. Thanks for the informative video Noah, I am just curious about the paperlike, is it possible to layer it with a glass film, like I would put the glass film first and then the paperlike, would that affect the efficiency of the apple pen?

Most likely yes,the whole Point ir paperlike is to simulate paper ,so with any kind of harder Surface it Will most probably ruin the whole Point of ir

on the note taking perspective, surface pro definitely wins. But usability wise, its definitely the iPad Pro. I really hate watching videos on the surface pro or doing anything other than taking notes because of the font size and the lack of applications designed for mobile platforms (because Microsoft somewhat just decided not to make a Windows lite or Windows Touch system for whatever reasons). The super not-eye-friendly interface of windows makes me sick all the time, and finally I made up my mind and switched to an iPad Pro.
@sppss9144 жыл бұрын
I guess Microsoft still think their surface pro is a LAPTOP, not a tablet, or they are just too stupid and slow to realize the difference between a tablet and a LAPTOP, shame on MS.

You cover a certain niche in YT. For varying your content within this niche, i suggest you also start testing out Chromebooks and 2 in 1 devices. I’m sure your viewers will agree. Especially comparing them like you have in this video, since the ones out there currently aren’t thorough enough. Ex- Chromebook vs iPads, why an XPS 2 in 1 could be a great device students for note taking and working on. So on and so forth. Vary it up, theres plenty you can do in this niche youve cared yourself. IDM lesser smartphone content either (personally)

Why would you compare a 2020 iPad with a 2015 (design) Surface Pro? The Pro X is the modern Surface Pro.
@TellurdogIsayhi4 жыл бұрын
Man I really hope microsoft makes the surface pro 8 be a clone of the surface pro x, but with a regular CPU. I wanted the surface pro x, but the whole arm thing was a no-go. I just sold my ipad pro 12.9 because the multitasking absolutely sucks, so I’m due for a new computer very soon.

Surface Pro for people who,d like a better computer, experience (in a tablet) The iPad for the better tablet experience. I had both, to many compromises on the iPad Pro, the pencil has a better flow for drawing but still exilent for writing. The Surface Pen I found better at writing notes than drawing. Still as a tablet the iPad can’t be beat. Using the Surface as a tablet is a pain, better as a mobile laptop that can also take notes. I unfortunately can,t use an iPad as my only machine, thats why I sold the Surface, bought a Macbook Pro and kept the iPad.

Notability has paper backgrounds. Also, you don’t need a ruler because the lines self-rule if you hold at the end of your line draw. Try using it more, and I think you’ll find it more capable than you appear to think it is.

I am a teacher and have been using the apple ecosystem for about the last 5 years. I have had a iPad air 2, and just ordered an iPad 8. I have a MacBook and iPhone. I received a surface pro from the school district, and am trying to get used to it. So, I am realizing the OneNote will be the default app, when i want the migration from all devices. Any other programs that I can use across both platforms?

Listen dude 😂 , even my watch is a computer. I would never change my iPad Pro because of all the fun it gives, I wouldn't change it for a PC or even a Surface or an iMac. I can do anything, and everything you can think of I can do on my iPad Pro, but the only frakking thing I can't do on my iPad Pro is using macro's in Excel. Comparing oranges and apples is bs. If you can't use macro's on iPadOS or iOS you look for an alternative and I've found it. I even cancelled my Office 365 subscription. Not because I hate MS (which I don't) or because I'm an Apple user, but just because I don't need it anymore. We all make our own choices... dude 😂😂 😂 I've seen the Surface a few times in action and I love it. If I was still a Windows user I would certainly go for a Surface. So don't be offended if my choice is not the same as yours... dude 😂😂

Hello Noah, from your experience about iPad Pro and external SSD drive if you use... Can you use the SSD drive with iPad to the full extent? I mean to copy from iPad to SSD something what you created on iPad (video, markup photo etc...). I have had issues with it and the result was that Apple admitted that iPad does not perform as advertised and I am asking for a refund...
