I'm not so sure about that. Zack has even mentioned that one problem with upping the hardness usually makes the material more brittle. There is usually a trade off between scratch resistance and how easy it is to shatter. Thus why you get these sapphire infused glass, or ceramic infused glass. Going with composite materials, instead of just harder. For instance, a diamond display would be the most scratch resistant. Direct impact on the top would not crack the display from the impact. The problem is the sides of diamonds are quite brittle. Some people have suggested that if you would use diamond for the display, you would need to have a relatively thick bezel made of rubber. Having even plastic, which many of today's phones use, would cause a diamond screen to crack quite easily from the force being transferred between the plastic and the diamond on the side.

The stainless steel frames are PVD coated according to the information I've been able to find on the web, the same process that's used on higher end wristwatches. It isn't paint.
