Tiny sensors (smartphones) make ugly pictures. The pictures look good on the phone screen, but the moment you watch the pictures on a monitor, you'll see how limited they are even when the light conditions are perfect.
@tvrtkoharapin88093 жыл бұрын
@@philipcooper8297 idk I think all digital photos look ugly compared to analog ones the color the range everything is simulated whilst on film you are literally taking that moment, the light from that moment and imprinting it forever on a piece of film so of course reality is better looking than a simulation, or at least it is warmer
@desotaku52023 жыл бұрын
@@tvrtkoharapin8809 It's not quite literally reality you see on film, otherwise there wouldn't be the different looks of different filmstocks like portra, ektar or aerochrome if you want to go real nuts. Some high end camera's can do things you can't really do on film, if you need that is the question. To me the most beautiful thing is the laid back approach of film. You get a limited amount of shots and that makes you think a lot different. You analyze a place totally different. With a dslr, i would run around and shoot it like a semi automatic, one of the thousands will be good. But with 36 images, and 10 bucks a roll, you stop and think more. You dont want to waste the roll. That made me learn faster than with a digital camera
@Bossti3 жыл бұрын
I don't know if I agree with that. The film pictures certainly got "that look" to them, but I suspect by bringing the blues and yellows more to the green side and saturating them a bit more while also shifting the white balance to be a bit warmer you could bring the colors of the iPhone close to the film colors. Softening the details a bit would also do much. With many of the pictures, you can also see obvious differences in choice of exposure. Where you really get that difference is with the shallow depth of field though. But otherwise I actually kinda prefer the iPhone shots 1/3 of the the time. Don't get me wrong: I love my film cameras and I really like to shoot film. But I think if anything this video proves that either one is fine as long as you go out and shoot. And not - like some in the comments put it - that tiny sensors make ugly pictures. That's an opinionated term that limits the whole process of creating a great picture to one relatively unimportan technical aspect. Most important is Willems eye for great but quiet scenes here. That's seriously impressive I think and I wish I had his sense for scenery!
@nikytamayo3 жыл бұрын
The color sensitivity of film in shadows is something that will be very hard for digital cameras to replicate. I mean, we can use HDR to balance out the highlights and shadows, but it always feels so forced... with film, you've got gradations of light fall-off and bloom that you simply can't replicate with 8bit color in a JPEG... or even on most monitors once you've scanned the photo. Something I am constantly fighting with because I like shooting photos in the dark! I feel that this comparison would be closer, though, with some manual adjustment on the iPhone and with some of the AI features turned off.

@@hellsing0999999999 To my knowledge the Fuji X100V only adds the colors to the digital image. A very accurate color reproduction but that’s not enough if you want a true 35mm look. I mean film and its organic result is so amazing. Plus having a photographer like Willem behind the camera is a force that no phone could compare to. But with our phones we are trying to strip out almost everything that is organic in photography. I love the film almost 100% of the time over the iphone.

Whoa, Willem, you're apartment is incredible! So happy for you and Alison to have found a fantastic place like that. Back on topic, a fun video. I wouldn't think to shoot the same photo with two different cameras like that. This is very informative. I probably should try that, too. I defintly see the ultra digital sharpening/clarity, contrast enhancement, that the latest iPhones do. Fantastic for shooting through fog or a dirty airplane window, but those effects make photos in more normal conditions look all "'70's postcardy" to me. Fortunately, iPhones shoot RAW files now. Hey I love this. It all comes back to the right tool for the job.

It is mainly a dfifference in tonality and color palette. Once you shoot in Raw (only available in the iPhone pro) and throw a film preset on it like RNI or similar, the difference will be much much less pronounced. I mean a film is like a development "preset" that enhances certain colors, dismisses others. Also with Raw one can get rid of a big part of the oversharpening of the iPhone. Obviously it would be much easier with a system camera like a Fujifilm.
