I really enjoyed your review. That being said, one thing I’ve done in switching to the iPhone 13 Mini is use a 3rd party app for shooting which lets me shoot in RAW and truly dial in settings like you said. I have really enjoyed Halide. Agree that Apple should let us disable HDR for sure! Even if they have to bury it in settings I’ll take it. Also I actually switched to a Mini from a 13 Pro Max. It was just too much phone. I was going to go with the regular Pro but it was still bigger than I wanted. I also have an iPad Mini gen 6 which made this an easier move. Anyway! I totally agree on your points about the camera. Personally I have an 11 Pro, and while I love the small form factor of the mini, I could never get one simply due to the lack of a standard/«telephoto» lens. I didn’t know Apple removed the smart hdr toggle though, yeah that stinks! I almost exclusively use Lightroom for my shots, as the files are raw and it bypasses the ugly post-processing of the stock camera app (at least some of which I think is what they call deep fusion, as it’s especially bad in indoor lightning condition when night mode doesn’t kick in yet). It’s very disappointing the ways in which Apple restricts their phones and thereby the freedom of the consumer/photographer to choose how THEY want their photos to look. Especially after bragging about how revolutionary and “pro” their camera setups are.
@GaryHughesOfficial2 жыл бұрын
I think that Apple is just making it for the largest amount of people and, to be fair, I think that in most circumstances, the camera works really well. I don’t think they have pro photographers in mind when they design the camera functions :)

13 mini user here - I want to offer up a suggestion. If you’re a professional photographer (which I am), don’t reach for a smartphone! Get a small camera (I have a couple of small fujifilm cameras that destroy any iPhone) and you’ll love family life/daily life photos so much more. I really just use my iPhone camera for pictures of receipts or other random stuff around the house, or maybe a quick video snippet. However, occasionally I might really want to get a “real” photo when I’ve left my camera at home and in these instances, I will definitely be editing my photo in Lightroom. So, here’s my tip: you can add a Lightroom widget to your Home Screen or Lock Screen that takes you directly to the Lightroom camera where you can shoot raw DNGs and immediately edit them. Works great 👍🏼

Got a 13 mini too recently but I totally agree with you on smart HDR. I was extremely surprised to see how heavily processed (Deep Fusion and Smart HDR) the photos come out while using the default camera app. Most photos come out ok but some are just so processed with obvious AI sharpening and weird AI tone adjustment that just look awful. And yeah on top of that how there's even the option to turn this off is even more shocking. When I'm looking through the viewfinder and snap a picture, that is the image I want, not whatever Apple decides is the best version of the photo after it's taken with no way for me to get the old one back. I've been trying an app called ProCam which seems to take photos in a way which bypasses smart HDR and deep fusion which I enjoy except it does not have OIS which is a bit of a bummer.

Great review. I just found it and although it's a year old it helped me in taking a decision regarding the 13 Mini. Granted, Apple has never advertised its cameras for professional use. Some skilled photographers use them for such purpose but not the majority. The elimination of the HDR option follows a software cost reduction. And, as you well said, the general public does not even notice that. Regarding the zoom, Sandmarc has some pretty good glass. Their macro, fisheye, and zoom are excellent for iPhones. Now, on a related note, I want to wait until September before I decide on the Mini. Who knows? Maybe they do launch a Mini 15 since so meany people like the Mini. My own reasons for a Mini are the size and I also want to force myself to use the phone for basic purposes. Mini can help.

You can move the market forward without alienating your customers, you can keep usb3 around until usbC does become the new adopted standard. You can keep the headphone jack until wireless is ubiquitous. Its not an "either" "or" equation unless of course your Apple then its "either" get rid of Usb3 "or" we can't increase our profit margins into the stratosphere.

Thank you Gary for the time and effort to produce and to upload this insightful presentation. Just one suggestion. Like visiting a restaurant, it would be uncommon for the waiter to ask for feedback, subscriptions and for comments on the meal and the service right at the entrance of the eatery, waiting to be seated. Right at then end would be appropriate and in your case not required at all. Anyone, stimulated by your videos would seek you out for forthcoming presentations, regardless. There are KZbin influencers who never ask for approval, still having amassed a subscriber base of 15m and more. Just a thought.
@GaryHughesOfficial2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for taking the time for this thoughtful reply, I appreciate it. I will take on what you have suggested and give it some thought. I have to weigh it against a few things. First, if you go back to the beginning of any of the big KZbin channels, you will see them asking for subscribers in their early videos. As a channel grows, especially in to tens or hundreds of thousands, the growth becomes exponential as your videos are still out their getting views. If my channel is any indication, a channel with 100k subscribers, if they are making good content, will be collecting 200-500 new subscribers a day, without having to try that hard. Once the ball is rolling, you don't really need to ask anymore, the numbers start to gain critical mass. That being said, you will see any big KZbinr, no matter how many subscribers they have, asking for subscribers when they near a milestone. More often, though, you will see other KZbinrs asking for them on their behalf on other channels. The other part of this is when to ask. According to all the data I have, almost nobody watches an entire video. This video, for example, has an average watch time of four minutes, which is actually pretty darn good. That number drops a ton when you look at younger viewers to about 2 minutes. I can track exactly how many subscribers each video brings in and, all things being equal, you get half as many people liking and subscribing if you don't ask at the beginning. I hope to be at the point where I don't need to worry about asking in the future, but in the meantime, I have started to add time codes to the videos so that people can skin the intro and get right to the review if they want. That and keeping the pitch brief will probably be the way I go for now. Thanks for watching!

Here’s a thought for you. Your opinion and analogy are completely off the mark. I often like videos when asked to because I understand the ridiculous amount of work it requires to produce a high quality video and I want to show my respect and appreciation. If you a professional photographer are you really relying on your iPhone to take pictures? Somehow I don’t believe that.
@GaryHughesOfficial2 жыл бұрын
Hey Ryan! I have had this comment a couple of times so here’s the deal: no, most professionals don’t rely on their iPhone for professional work (let’s not include millions of creators who do) but skilled photographers do approach photos differently than the average person, and the camera most of us always have is the one in the phone. Having a camera phone (and software) that allows you things like more manual control and portrait focal lengths make taking photos with your phone more interesting and useful to someone who knows how to take advantage of those features. Market research shows companies over and over again that the camera is the number one consideration of a huge percentage of consumers when they choose to upgrade their phone (along with battery life). Does your average person care if they get an optical zoom? Probably not. Does a photographer? I think so. Thanks for watching.

Hmmm. Well I guess if you mean "how could a professional photographer use a phone for commissioned work?", then many might agree with you. That being said, many HUGE magazine covers have been shot with phones in the last few years, but maybe that's a gimmick. Either way, I am a firm believer that a great photographer can make use of any camera that's at hand, including a phone. In the case of this video, it's really not about that, though. It's about people who are creators at heart who will want a phone with more robust features to shoot with when their regular gear isn't convenient. As an aside: I see your point, if it were 2008. A camera is a camera, and each one has a different use case. Plenty of creators, influencers, brands, and yes, photographers create stunning work with modern smart phone cameras.
