This is honestly one of the best and most real reviews that I’ve seen. The photos that you showed were fantastic too. I loved your model’s look. I shoot only ProRaw because I hate the over-processed look of Apple’s jpg’s. It’s funny that a client would never accept someone using a phone camera for a shoot, but something was started during the pandemic called “virtual/remote photo shoots”. These shoots are done by the photographer using an app to shoot through the model’s phone from any distance. It was used by Vogue, New Yorker, Chanel, Ferragamo, and a lot of others.

I thought you were going to go in a different direction but I agree. I think average people would be hard pressed to tell much difference between the last 4-6 iPhone versions for general use. I went from the original SE to the 11 to the 13 mini and there was a good jump from the SE but those photos still don’t look bad unless I zoom in.

I actually shed a tear the minute I saw a photo taken on ProRAW in-person and honestly I just can’t believe how good the 48 megapixel sensor on the iPhone 14 Pro series is. I used to shoot a lot with my iPhone camera but when the pandemic happened, I stopped mainly because I had nowhere else to go nor anything interesting in my area to capture but over time I have been trying to utilize my phone more and more just so I can get that feeling once again that I used to get with an iPhone. I use a Sony A7III w/ an 85mm & 55mm lens both at f/1.8 and I plan on upgrading my Tamron 28-75 to a Sigma 24-70 but I’m also trying to get back into video which I did a lot before TikTok came along and I’m in the market for a new phone (plus I use it to run my online store to add & check on inventory and would be nice to have more space than 256GB). Also, I’d like to shoot in ProRAW and ProRes, something my current phone doesn’t have (11 Pro Max).

I've noticed the natural bokeh and less need for portrait mode even on the phone 13 pros. Love it. If there ever is a need to want/need bokeh there's always the focos app.

I've watched a lot of KZbin reviews on the iPhone 14 Pro camera quality, and this is by far the best video review I have seen. The photo and video footage straight from the iPhone 14 Pro in this video looks absolutely amazing. None of the other reviews came close to presenting this quality. You absolutely hit the nail right on the head with this. You gave praise to the 14 Pro/Max for being the best smartphone camera and you left it at that. I really appreciate the point you made, if you’re doing professional photography of course get a professional camera but if you’re taking pictures of receipts and things of that nature basically keep what you got. Me, I have a camera that I don’t even use anymore because I use my phone which is how I started out doing photography but I’m not into doing paid shoots so using my phone is fine. I had a 13 pro max and went to the 14 pro max cause I not only care about the cameras I care about all of it from the chip to the battery. But you my friend have definitely gained a new subscriber!

I wanna have a good camera on my phone, since it's the one camera that's always with me. But I don't need the latest models, as the diffrence isn't that huge from one year to another, and I take my Nikon or Canon with me anyway, the times I'm going out just to take pictures :)

I was a bit skeptical at first, but you made some really good points. For the average user and the above average user, most people won't notice the small improvements of the camera. Like you said you only notice a difference when you zoom in 3x times and start comparing the small differences. Great Video!

It's always so confusing and irritating when new iPhone's drop. You're right. Everyone is like blown away by the images. But like, really, when you put the images next to each other, it's not super obvious which is the new phone, and which is last years haha I'm definitely shooting pro raw tho. I feel like the jpgs straight out have a little too much sharpening. Apple getting a little carried away with it. But the raw photos are really nice

My iPhone 12 pro actually replaced my old Olympus em5 for all the SoMe and website content I do for my girlfriends business. It's just so more easy to get good looking photos straight out of camera on the iPhone and ready to share. I do miss macro and greater telephoto for catching wild life as well and will of course take the benefit of better low light performance! My biggest limit with the iPhone is taking photos of people, where I miss a big camera to feel looked upon as a photographer 😅 When people just see the result, and not the tool, they normally presume that I use a propper camera - unless they are pixel peeping photographers themselves..

A lot of KZbinrs reviewed smartphone cameras and said how awesome those phones had become, but few did what you did, filming the entire video with just the phone! And you did not even film the A roll with the rear main camera. You used the front "supposedly inferior" camera, with the built-in mic. That's what's convincing me that the phone is really that good, or practically usable. Good job.

Yes. Down-to-earth and clueful. The one hitch in the iPhone cameras for me is adobe clay skin. My best next step would be to be able to process Caucasian or Asian skin from the phone with very nice microcontrast, WB, and gradation. I've shot very moving video of vocal performances with iPhones and I love them for video and audio. I used the 13 Pro Max to record 2 hours of 4K video at a micro-high school's graduation. No overheating, great audio from an Audio-Technica omni condenser reporter's mic, and fine video in mixed lighting thanks to Apple's wonderful computational imaging. I own the Canon EOS R6, and I'd prefer the iPhone for outdoor mixed sun and shade because of the wonderful dynamic range. The iPhones are a blast. (Age 80, photographer for 55 years, still working in photo/video.) Of course, the R6 with the 135 f/2 L for concert closeups, dance, speakers, candids, etc., is just glorious.

good insights Patrick...i got an A74 as i do semi pro work , but unless I'm doing paid work why would i want to lug around a bag with a body and lenses all day when the quality of what's coming out of these modern phones is getting so much closer every year , The mini dslr in your pocket you can make calls with also will be so close ,imagine say another 5 years of tech and software upgrades in phones even how much closer they will be to mirrorless ? and considering most people consume content on small screens...phones cameras in the future will do what mirrorless has done to the old school dslrs.

Been waiting for your review! Loved your 13 pro review last year and appreciate your candid perspective. I need a new phone soon and have been debating between buying a used 13 pro for cheap or the 14 pro. I’m a photographer and love using little cameras like the Ricoh GRiii, I love the idea of having a camera almost as a good as the Ricoh on me everywhere, that I could make largish prints from. I’ve been debating whether its worth the price for the 14 pro or to just buy the cheaper 13 pro - struggling to see any videos that compare the proraw differences between these phones. Any thoughts? Is there much notable difference between using the 13 pro and 14 pro in proraw?

13 pro is great in proraw too. honestly if I didn’t make videos about these phones I think I would have been fine with even just the 12 pro. There is a nice jump when you do the 48mp proraw shots but not sure how often you really need that.

Spot on. I’ve been shooting professionally for 25 years and would love to show up to a shoot, open up my bag, pull out an iPhone and start shooting a bride. proraw doesnt give you any real improvements in low light - in fact you're probably better off using HEIC and getting all the HDR benefits for light back.

With my friend's iPhone 13 pro max, the pro raw always gave better results in low light too, and the dynamic range was basically the same if not a little better than the heic files. It would be a bummer if that is somehow different for the iPhone 14 pro max since i just absolutely cannot stand how the jpegs look out of the phone (or any phone for that matter). That said i would still love it if you test it regardless :'))

Aside from the 48mp upgrade on the iPhone 14 pro, all of the most exciting updates came with IOS16. Even portrait mode was updated with ios 16. What I've decided to do is upgrade my 128GB 13 pro to 256GB and maybe just shoot more pro raw pics + some darkroom magic. I've also recently picked up an old sony a6000 just to get more experience with a real camera and access to the large library or lens compatible with that camera line.

Very positive advice and I really like that you talk what you believe not really promoting anything, and moreover I think most mirrorless doesn't have those features that most flagship phones has, like fast and accurate auto focus (most Fuji, Nikon, Panasonic mirrorless suffers from focus inconsistency) color science where even Sony got horrible skin tones and their colour science its just horrible, so yes as point and shoot many phones win over mirrorless
