I was a bit hesitant with the Pixel 3XL because I didn't think the colors looked quite as natural straight out of the camera, but their in phone editor does magic to bring it back. If you opt to shoot in RAW and edit in the LightRoom app it is amazing! PS I never even considered using a wide angle on the portrait mode...thanks now I have to buy a new lens!

You can use iPhone XR to take pets pictures in portrait mode using the Halide app. Love my XR in black.

Caleb, not that you didn't do anything amazing job; however I think it'd be cool to revisit the rest as a Redux when Taylor can help out. I know my suggest it to get consistent photos between all of the phones so we can really have you as the "static" subject vs having you be at variable distances.

I highly recommend a camera app called AfterFocus. It allows you to select the focal object in a picture and add blur to the background. It works really well and I don't mind as much giving up object and animal portrait mode with my xr. I've experimented with a bunch of camera apps with depth of field adjustment and even though AfterFocus adds the blur by manually selecting the object it actually produced the best results and is a lot of fun to use. If you don't want to deal with manually selecting then the next best app I found is called Focos. You can take a picture and then it has a depth of field bar to adjust the amount of blur. Works with objects and pets. Like I said I prefer, AfterFocus but I can understand not wanting to manually select what the object is and what the background is so if you don’t want to do that then Focos is another option. Aravind Kumar On a small screen, 720p is good enough for youtube lol. You wouldnt know the difference if you put the Xs and Xr side by side. These 2k HDR screens on other phones will drain the battery quick n degrade it fast with constant charge. Apple knows people have tablets/Ipads or laptops/Macbooks to watch movies or shows. Me, i still cant stand watching movies or shows on any phones.

Only if you like wide portraits, Most portraits are not supposed to be that wide, its just one type of portrait. It looks good though, I am not trying to put the XR down but it seems like the camera is only good for that one kind of mode. The XS pretty much kills it in everything else.

56mm is definitely more flattering and 85mm would be ideal. 85mm f1.2 look would be sweet. Of course I’m biased. I love the environmental portrait look of a 35mm f1.4 or even leica 21mm f1.4. I shot on nikon 24mm f1.4 and I do love that look too. 50mm f1.4 quite nice too. No wrong way to portrait just don’t get up too close to them. Of course some people use 200mm f2.8 or even 200mm f2.

Ian Lee you have to watch the video. XR only does wide angle portrait since it doesn’t have a standard lens. And unlike the pixel it doesn’t crop in to do portrait mode. So it’s down to if you prefer the more flattering portrait or half body portrait.

I've been having issues with that on my 3XL. Sometimes it looks cool. But I think it must be a lighting issue. The brighter side will blur more than a side that is slightly darker.

Don’t you notice background is only properly blurred on XS? Both pixel 3 and Xr apply uneven blur from left to right! Also you didn’t mention dual lens camera creates much more precise depth map, which allows for different level of blur on closer and further background parts.

I just think Tele lenses IN the phone tend to be very BLAH. They just aren't as capable as the primary lens on the phone. My S9+ has absolutely trash portrait mode but the primary is GREAT. Manny Ortiz showed in his video how surprisingly real the bokeh can look on the Iphone too. Apple has actually impressed me this year.

The I phone Xs max is the best all around phone of this year go ahead disagree. To be honest the pixel does better then the I phone Xs max in some cases with the camera but the I phone always seems to pull ahead somehow someway. But no phone is ever perfect. At this point it’s preference.

The background blur was CLEARLY really messed up and inconsistent on the pixel 3 with the wide moment lens. It was shown several times with commentary “the blur is perfect” when it was obvious on first glance that the software was not producing the right effect. It’s understandable that the effect would be messed up when using a field of view the engineers didn’t plan for but let’s call a spade a spade.

"Computational photography" will not correct and give you a typical "depth of view or framing" that a "portrait lens" will give you, but it will give you bokeh. Portrait mode applied to wide angle lens is not accurate and would not be used in professional setting since you would have more facial distortion on the wide angle lens if the subject filled the entire frame with the subject. Any lens can give you bokeh given a sufficient low aperture. A portrait lens is typically chosen not only for it's bokeh only but also it's framing focal length, depth of of view attributes beyond bokeh and lack of facial distortion when the subject fills the entire frame.

I never used an iPhone for portrait photography, but the pixel commentary is kind of misleading. I always edit my photos using the photos app whenever I take portrait photos on the pixel. It allows you to focus on a certain area, adjust the background blur, adjust the colors, etc. I can see how other cameras might seem better if you don't tweak the portrait photos on the pixel. With a few tweaks I'm sure that you could get a photo that looks exactly like the iPhone photos. The phone actually saves two images automatically when you're in portrait mode. That means that you're actually supposed to tweak the 2nd of the two photos. After you're done tweaking it you can save it and delete the others.
