I am in total agreement with you. One thing that these small shops fail to recognize also is that their patrons usually go out of their way to go to small shops and often have to pay more than we would at the big box places...but we do it to help them out. Or rather we "did" that to help them, as I will no longer feel the need to help a small business that decided to screw us over.

Great reply genius! As I've already stated: Nobody is forcing anyone to buy guns. Dealers can't count on moving a certain # of guns per week at a smaller profit margin. Once they sell what they have, they may not get any more.This means no more income on the product after it's all gone. Selling higher to customers willingly paying more because of scarcity only makes sense in the uncertain market they're we're with right now.

You're right that things like the aluminum doesn't cost more but the materials cost going up or down is not the only driver of the price. Right now the supply is the same but the demand is higher. The same price adjustment would be seen if the demand is what stayed the same but if the supply was decreased. It's like when orange trees dont' produce because of drought. Demand is the same but supply is diminished so the price of a bag of oranges goes way up. We're faced with possible gun bans.

You know even though you described this in the very simplest of terms, some of these guys STILL don't understand. Well I listened and I do understand. I also sympathize with the situation we find ourselves in. It's an unstable time for gun buyers and sellers, and the law of supply and demand will make all of us choose one way or the other. But in time things will settle back to normal and we can hope and pray it's sooner than later. Keep up the great service you provide us. T.Y.

(...continued) the high prices make it hard on an individual basis, but over all allows a more even distribution of necessary goods to all needy parties while creating a powerful incentive for suppliers to deliver relief sooner than they might otherwise be motivated to do so. In the end, more people are helped sooner and with more goods by the high prices than are harmed by them. This is the power of the free market. (sorry for dragging this across 3 posts, I hate the reply character limit.)

What you need to understand is Moss Pawn's main sellers in the firearms department are things affected by a possible ban (as they have stated in other videos). Now, when you are limited in supply to 1/10th of your normal monthly sales volume, you must raise prices to cover costs and retain normal cash flow volume. This is simple economics.

The biggest problem with the supply and demand phenomena right now is that when the supply & demand finally balances back out the prices will only go down marginally. The days of the $500 glock and $1,500 AR are over, just like gas prices the price goes sky high and then when it comes down people think theyre getting a deal even if it means a 10-20% spike from the original price.

You're not seeing the whole picture. My local shop is a large volume dealer. I spoke with the manager and a S&W sales rep last week there, and I will tell you flat out, the shops simply do not receive the inventory they did even 6 months ago. On average, my shop received 30-50 S&W AR-15's per month. They just received their first shipment in over 3 months, and it was only for 28 rifles. They went over 2 months without a single AR in stock from an maker, essentially losing 2 months sales.

Great comment. I am glad to see there are people who still think like economists.You cant sell at the old price because you cant replace it at the price you once gave for it. I believe that you should still keep your margins the same though.

I was told by the manager himself that their stocking rates are roughly 1/5 of normal, and worse for some makers and models. There is a supply issue, it's not something someone made up. Not to mention if you were to sell at normal price, some guy with a boat load of cash will simply buy up a huge quantity of it to resell at a huge profit. Increasing prices helps to spread available supply too, rather than it all end up in the hands of a hoarder.

Some shops are getting screwed, 'cause suppliers are more likely to ship to "bigger" customers, or those that have been with them longer. I'm not saying they need to sell at normal prices (Walmart does that and they run out of stock in 5 minutes). But there is an equilibrium price, and it's not the prices that gunbroker is selling for. The guys that are selling $600 M&P 15s for 1800-2000 are the guys i'm talking about. (some people are so desperate they will buy though, which wrecks the system)

There are plenty of local and online retailers that have NOT chosen to gouge their customers. Selling a LPK for 200$ is gouging. Selling P-Mags for 50$ each is gouging. Selling a forged lower for 300$ when you can billet for 275$ all day is gouging. There is nothing illegal about gouging...but we the customer will take notice, and choose to not frequent establishments that chose to gouge.

A lot of ppl here are struggling with basic economics. A business is about making a profit and in reality maximizing profit. It is the profit motive that keeps a business going. A sale is nothing but a deal between buyer/seller. If you are frustrated that some guns are now going for 2-3x more now you need to understand that it is the ppl PAYING 2-3x more for those products! Don't complain about a dealer when someone else has the money and is willing to PAY, they are the ones driving the market!
@erutherford
@erutherford 11 жыл бұрын
Note: The above was just an example. It wasn't really intended as much of a flame as it was to point out that you could have laid out the supply and demand arguement much better and have gotten your point across without causing a ton of uproar. Example: You may sell a Ruger 10/22 for 300$ and make just 30$ off of that. Normally you may sell 10 a month. Now if you only get 1 per month you have to make 300$ on the one gun and sell it for about 600$.

Price gouging is a pejorative term referring to a situation in which a seller prices goods or commodities much higher than is considered reasonable or fair. "Like M.S.R.P.?" Alternatively, it may refer to suppliers' benefiting to excess from a short-term change in the demand curve. Call it what you like, I'm sure people will remember later.

And I consider it far more ethical to make things a bit more expensive to acquire in the short term, to sustain and increase the supply of that good to ensure the needs of the people are met, than to try and "play nice" and run out of those supplies, leaving the people high and dry instead of getting priority. I understand your argument completely, and I understand that reputation is an immense factor in the free market. There is a limit to price increase that I'd personally let slide as well.

Few days ago, I was in a gun store here in TX... idea was all ammo purchases of non-available calibers ( 223/556, 7.69x39...308, etc) you had to buy a gun to buy the ammo, and for the more available calibers (.40, 30-06, etc) it's one box per customer (3 per family)

I agree with what you are saying and don't think you are "gouging". My hope is that consumers will start to refuse to pay such a high premium for these items and the prices go back to normal. I don't think they're going to get their ban - and once everyone realizes that they won't pay these inflated prices.

Price Gouging and Profiteering are the terms used to describe the current temporary blip in retail pricing that we are seeing. The smart businessman understands the need his business has for customer loyalty which is undermined by PG and P. A wise businessman once said: "We have a right to make a profit NOT A KILLING." Reducing your customer base, by short term profit taking is PG and P, and stupid it terms of long term profitability.

The "price gouging" is GOOD for all of us. Because gun manufactures know that their products will sell for much more right now, they're willing to expand production, invest in capital, and give overtime to workers. If the prices were the same then there would be no incentive to make more product than normal and potentially lose profit. In the end the higher prices lead to a higher supply, so more product is put into the market overall which is good for all of us.
@kenny474
@kenny474 11 жыл бұрын
It also doesn't matter if they sell in 2 hours or two weeks! If you can not get more in stock at the normal rate (ie: pre-rush), how fast you sell them makes no difference. If I have 2 AR's and sell them in 2 hours, I make no more profit than if I sold them in 2 weeks.

@erutherford, You do have access to the real numbers (in a way), if a manufacturer has raised prices by 50 percent to their own customers (dealers), you would see a corresponding increase in retail price among ALL dealers not just SOME. The current retail pricing shows "price gouging" on the part of SOME of the dealers and NOT an increase in price on the part of the manufacturers.

Price gouging is a pejorative term referring to a situation in which a seller prices goods or commodities much higher than is considered reasonable or fair. This rapid increase in prices occurs after a demand or supply shock: examples include price increases after hurricanes or other natural disasters. In less precise usage, it can refer either to prices obtained by practices inconsistent with a competitive free market, or to windfall profits. Looks like gouging is exactly what you are doing.
@toddwichmann
@toddwichmann 11 жыл бұрын
I understand and agree with your supply and demand arguments, but there is a different way to approach this: keep your prices the same, and lower your supply i.e. restrict the amount of stuff people can buy to prevent other shops coming in and buying all your stuff - e.g. 1 AR per person, 2 boxes of ammo, etc all sold at the older (usual) prices. There is a gun shop near me doing this & because they are keeping their prices the same, I am loyal to them for life now. I avoid price gaugers.
@CarbonGlassMan

If you have access to guns that are still on the shelves for those low prices, then don't worry about the places charging more. Just don't buy from them. If your local stores have those guns for those prices though, I very seriously doubt that they are available for any more than a few hours before they're all sold out and won't be restocked for at least a month down the road.

Start simple. Pick either long or short gun. Then study that. I found a picture book on the history of firearms and it made good "toilet reading". The nice thing is that this kind of book shows the evolution of guns, which helped.There are beautiful hardbound books on pistols, or rifles. Once you understand the actions, note the calibers. You can google the caliber + "ballistics" to study the difference. Hint: bigger ain't always better.

"Pricing Gouging" is good! It keeps people from panic hoarding and instead buying only what they truly need. Local gun shop here in central TX has all the ammo and guns you want. But bullets like 9mm FMJ's are $1.25 each and AR's are $4K. No one buys these at this price to resell, unlike you Barry with your AK mags. So instead of leaving a few mags for everyone else you engaged in panic hoarding adding to the problem. Had the price been $50 each, there would be more left for everyone else.

There are 2 local gun stores in my town of 3500 people. Neither one of them have raised prices on their semi auto rifle more than $100 a rifle. The only reason they raised their prices that much is because, and I am quoting both the owners, "there is a small increase in price from the factories." You dont need to jack prices up, people remember when you do.
@Mycroftsbrother
@Mycroftsbrother 11 жыл бұрын
I agree, this "panic buying" of guns and ammo has fueled shortages of both; HOWEVER, manufacturers are not stepping up to fill in the gap between supply and demand. In the free market, this is called the equilibrium point, and should take care of itself. If manufacturers are deliberately not producing enough product to meet demand but are relying on higher and higher prices to increase profits, then they are manipulating the market, ie. the fuel crisis of the '70s.

ALL of the orders by DHS, 1.6 billion rounds, is one day of production. The "shortage" is due to factory closings for three weeks EVERY DECEMBER! Caught up with low stock, as some chains were waiting for "Shot Show" to place their orders, caught them short in their supply chain... All will be normal in about 6 months, but, ammo will be slightly more expensive...

I had two boxes of CCI Stingers and a Box of Hornady 308 Self Defense ammo. He said that will be 13.98 and I was like "hey sir are you sure you got it right" after that he rang up the 308 ammo. The reason to support Mom & Pop shops is relationships. I bought for years from a small shop. During that time A BassPro and Cabelas opened near me. I could have abandoned Mom & Pop to save a little money. I paid a bit more because I could ask Mom to find me certain rifle and she would. I could bring an emergency repair in 2 day before a bing hunt and pop would get it fixed. They treated people right because it's the right thing to do. There's more to life than saving 20%.

I remember when I use to sell guns we would get a shipment of .223 in and I would not bother putting it on the shelf. I would open the package it came in off the truck and set it on the counter. No exaggeration every morning there was a line of 30 people who would clear it all in 5 minutes and there were some fights... it was pretty messed up. Eventually the store put a 3 box limit and even then they were cleaning house and people were trying to buy it go outside and come back in.

Your information on suppliers doing what they can is very helpful. Also, you are correct in selling nonessential items for the price to maintain your business. On the other hand, scapegoating teachers & parents isn’t going to solve anything but lead us further away from a solution. We are living in a dysfunctional society, some bad teachers, parents & gun dealers. For solutions, how about we look at the millions of tons of mind altering substances pumped into our county?

Nobody is gouging! In business, you must make a certain amount of revenue to cover expenses and still make money. When your supply volume drops below your sales volume, you will make less sales due to less available stock. Less sales volume equals less revenue, yet you still retain all normal overhead costs. To counteract a massively reduced sales volume, you must increase profit margin to maintain income necessary to remain in business. Simple economics.

There is no such thing as price gouging. Rising prices in case of a crisis is very important. It encourages people to save scarce resources, to try to stock up only on what is really necessary (guy with half a tank will wait until he is like quarter full when the prices are much lower), incentives people to get into business to increase supply, incentives people to better prepare for future crisis -both sellers and buyers, if they know there will be able to sell higher, they will stock up more.
@kenny474
@kenny474 11 жыл бұрын
Right on! Some people think gun shops have this duty to provide them with a good deal, regardless if they can maintain enough revenue to stay in business or not. If any of them ran a store and their product became scarce and highly valued, you bet your ass they would raise prices rather than lose money! See, it only matters to those who criticize if it's costing them money. They could care less about the shop and if it survives tough times.

A lot of people seem to think "Yeah, they can make a good profit at suggested retail, so theres no point in raising prices." Nobody seems to think about the costs of running a business when you have nothing to sell. Employees still need to be paid, and they need to pay for the property taxes, liscences and new stock. Plus with the possibility of new legislation, no stock is being put out, so theres really not much they can do, they need to cover a possible drop in sales in the future today.

Barry, right around the 8:00 marker you start talking about price gouging. I would argue that the price increase was necessary and appropriate and I'll tell you why. In an emergency if the 10 cent candles remained 10 cents, the first 5 people through the door would buy out the entire inventory, and the rest of the town would be without. If the fuel remained the regular low price, again, the first five people would buy it out and the rest of the town would have none. (Continued...)

I'm 100% pro true free markets, and reputation is just as important as the logical economic basis for businesses in a competitive free market. Raising the price of an AR from $1600 to $2200 can hardly be called gouging. The worst part of this is it's government, not the markets, that's making them expensive, by fucking with the free trade of individuals.

I love it the guys selling the guns are assuring us they're not "price gouging"!

Apparently my e-mail to walmart corporate did the job, as he is no longer allowed to purchase firearms from this walmart. All the other walmarts within ~25 miles all do order lists for AR's, this was the only one that let people hang around for 3-6hrs waiting for the firearms come in & let the first person in line buy all that he wanted. Needless to say he wasn't very happy :)

They're not idiots. If you want it and fear it is about to be banned, or if you want it before there is a registration law, you'll pay what it costs. I would say that if you're aware of a company that has AR lowers & you're not willing to name the company, It's probably because you know they'll sell out real fast as soon as people know they have it. Anyway, it's just supply & demand. Anything that changes either the supply or demand side of any product will affect the price of it.

With one breath, Eric describes 30 guys fighting for one gun at a box store, then with another smirks about walking up to the cash register with an armload of 30 round magazines. And I sure they were for his own personal use and NOT for "sale to the highest bidder" or marked up exhorbitantly for sale on HIS shelf! That kind of hoarding is the problem. Greed trumps necessity more often than not. Case in point!

Where I come from, the majority of ammunition on pistols are completely out. First they were selling one box of ammo. Most rifle ammunition are all gone, most likely .223 Remington and 5.56 x 45mm. Only hunting ammunition are left on shelves. Shotgun shells are almost gone. Most rifles in stock are almost empty, so does automatic pistols.

(...dang it .. continued) One last point regarding the free market and price mark ups. When sellers realize they can sell water for $30, more and more sellers jump into the market because who doesn't want to ear $30 on a $3 case of water? Well, as more sellers join the market, competition drives the price down, and once there is more than enough water to service the needs of the people, prices return to normal. This is how the market brings the needed supplies in faster.

It is not a rip off if there are people willing to pay. A can of soft drink (soda) costs around $0.02 to manufacture and can be found for sale at large events for $5.00, and people pay that price because they want it. Look at bottled water, it costs even less to manufacture and people still pay high prices for it even though they can drink from a tap for free. Want more examples? Look no further than your local shopping center.

It's very region dependent. IF there is an AR to be found where I live, it's over 2 grand. Mags may as well already be banned with their current availability- and even sub-10 round mags. The only things on my local shelves are bolt actions and revolvers and even those are marked up a little bit.

That's why you need higher prices. Higher prices disincentivise people from hoarding and buying what they don't really need to buy. If you know there is lack of supply and you can buy cheap, you will buy as much as you can. But if the price is high, you will stop and wait for prices to fall, letting people in more dire need to buy what you resigned on because of the higher price.

I could create an example. Right now all stores are ordering MUCH more restock than normal ... easily outstripping supply. If the distributor resupplies on an "X to each store until we're out" I could see some stores getting more than normal restocks while others may get less than normal. I'm not saying my example is "right" ... it is possible though. If you add in potential preferential treatment for big boxes then independents could really get squeezed.

The problem is that businesses are worried about making as much as they can off of customers right now. Instead, wouldn't it be better for a business to treat the customer more fairly and make me come back in a year for my next gun when the supply is there. I would go back to a gun shop willing to sell me a gun for what the manufacturer tells me that gun is worth. If a business takes advantage of me during a time of great demand, I'll find somewhere else to take my money when the supply is there

In fact , im only 32 years old... been shooting guns since i was 6-7 years old... i have never in my lifetime seen or ever heard of .22LR ammo being completely sold out at every store in a 50-100 mile radius where i live. Thats not even touching 9mm , 40 cal, 45 etc etc. One store by me had 3 skids full of .22LR 500 round boxes... within 4 hours they were picked dry. They told me that this has never happened and the business has been open since the 60's.
