1. Scope mount was loose, drove home thought barrel was just really fouled. Wasted ammo and range fee. 2. Guy next to you with a 7.5" AR and a muzzle brake throwing un-burnt powder all over you. 3. Arrives to range, left magazines at home. 4. RSO breathing heavily down your neck like it's his first day on the job and yours out the womb.

1 and 2 haven’t happened to me yet. 3 happened to me once, and I had to drive home and fetch them. Lucky thing is I lived within 10 mins drive. There was also one time I left the optics at home and had to drove back. 4 happens all the time. The RSOs at my local range have a habit of treating everyone as an idiot and yell all the time like grumpy drunks. I’m usually okay with it because I understand they are just trying to do their job and afraid accidents might happen, but it really triggers some other shooters.

My worst experience was an NRA High Power match at my local range, where my new M1 Garand decided to rip off case rims instead of extracting rounds because somebody **ahem** didn’t clean the chamber well after purchasing. My takeaways after years of shooting: 1. Always take more than one gun to the range 2. Clean your guns well afterwards and inspect them inside and out for excessive wear and tear 3. Make sure that any screws on your gun, sights, etc. are always tightened (using proper gunsmithing screwdrivers!!!). I’ve had action and sight screws back out on numerous occasions, wreaking havoc on the range 4. Use quality ammo or reloads you have followed by the book. I’ve been gassed in the face and suffered reliability issues with super cheap ammo. Maintain your guns well, be safe, and have fun on the range!

The nice thing about being a farmer, or a retired farmer, is that the firing range is right out your back door. But talking about guns you like to shoot, I absolutely love the way my Ruger SR1911S's and my Remington 1911R1S fit my hand and as much as I like shooting them it wasn't until I wrapped my hand around the Ruger Mark IV Competition Stainless that I found the gun of my dreams. I love shooting it so much I wake up mornings hoping that I can make it outside to shoot it sometime during the day. I was disabled in 2003 because of back problems that have steadily become worse and my day at the "range" is any day I can make it outside to shoot. I keep a metal folding chair and a yellow target ball on the porch. I drag the chair down to the driveway and toss the target ball out about 25 to 30 yards, shoot my eight magazines, gather up the target ball and the chair and take them back to their spot on the porch and hobble back in to my recliner happy to have been able to make it outside again.

As a new shooter I appreciate this video. I've only been a gun owner for a few months now and I've been shooting very often with my Glock 19 gen 5. I try to make it a point to make improvements each and every session. My last session was the first time I didn't see improvement and it bothered me a little bit. You are probably right when you say you need to focus on having fun first. Good video, keep up the good work. Been watching for almost a year now. You guys have tought me so much about firearms, my favorite gun channel on KZbin for sure.

Not really my bad day but when people bring their friends/families over at the range with lack of protective equipment, I see a trend that whenever an individual brings his friends over to shoot for the first time, they do not provide proper hearing and eye protection. I'd see the newcomers plugging their ears with their fingers the entire time and when it's their time to shoot, they're a little hesitant to shoot because of the noise. After seeing this multiple times at the range, I always bring a pack of foam earplugs and would offer them for those that need them just to make their shooting experience a little better.

I can admit to shooting a SilencerCo Omega 300 win mag can off my Scar 17S. I didn't have it tightened down. It traveled 25 yards downrange when I fired a shot & had a baffle strike as it left the rifle. SilencerCo was terrific during this entire experience. They fully rebuilt my can 100% in about 1 week or less. Top notch company! One of my worst days on the range. Turned out ok in the end thanks to SilencerCo.

Guys! This gives me a great idea for a video...how about an "IV8888 Behind the Scenes" or "a day with IV8888"? Like start from leaving for the range, maybe some shots while driving there and setup of cameras and mics, add some shots that got edited out, bloopers and outtakes and some closing thoughts or commentary. I think a lot of viewers would love to see how a day in the life would be.

Bad days at the range remind me of bad days of certain times when I play piano. Sometimes you just can't get much right and feel unfocused, the music just doesn't sound good. Then you come back the next day and things are great. The same thing happens even to the greatest pianists in the world. Same with shooting or any other skill. The brain is a very strange organ.

I'm sure I've given other people a bad day at the indoor range. I was trying some really hot .44 magnum handloads in my Ruger Redhawk (almost a full charge of Winchester 296 under a 200 grain Nosler JHP). Even with a 7.5" barrel, the muzzle flash lit up the whole range and the concussion was incredible. After firing off a few cylinders full, I looked around to see everyone else had left.

#4 and I'm posting this early in the video that sometimes air pressures and temperatures might throw your bullet flight off on different days (this is more for distance shooting). Or you had coffee and a monster right after, and your shooting hand looks like the Ed Edd and Eddie cartoon.

DavyJones'Locker thank you. When your dropping rounds while topping off a mag from shaky hands it's not gonna be a good shooting day. LOL! That barometric pressure talk is more for long range (as I'm sure you know already) but still effects bullet flight. I'll use any excuse though when my wife's with me though, and that one makes me look smart and gives me an excuse simultaneously...... I hope she doesn't watch this video and reads this. My worst day at the range in recent memory was having a case rupture in my Sig P320 blowing apart the extractor and cracking the frame. After looking at the other cases shot out of it, they all had similar markings indicating an unsupported case. I’ve since had the pistol fixed and it shot fine after being repaired. Definitely glad I was wearing proper safety gear.

Worst day at the range for me... Uberti .357 mag... Shooting pretty hot loads through it and unknown to me, the screws on the ejector rod began backing out. After a couple hundred rounds, the entire ejector (housing, screws and all) dropped out. It was an outdoor range and we spent a lot of time playing in the dirt with a magnet to find all the parts. Found 'em, no damage done, put everything back together and learned to take some screwdrivers with me and check the screws occassionally.

Back in 2014 at my last Annual Training, we were qualifying on the M249 SAW, one particular SAW caused a triple feed during quals, it also misfired continually and gave other issues. So I pulled it from the firing line and let it cool, inspected it and found the new gas block (non removable) was 3/4 clogged with carbon. No one had cleaned this SAW thoroughly for a long time, we got the Carbon out and the SAW back up and running but still gave some hiccups. Fun day at the range.

I've found that the S&W mod 19 shoots light bullets (125 - 145 grain) with odd stabilization patterns. Dead on at 5-10 yards and at 75-100 yards. But it's literally hard to hit a car door at 35 yards. They do great with any bullet over 145grains at any range.

My Bad Day at the Range; I was on one lane, and a man was with his children next to me. After squeezing off one magazine, I turned a little and found myself looking into the muzzle of a .22 rifle, held by one of those little kids! I slowly turned and moved the Muzzle away from my face, then the Father pulled the boy to their lane. The Father said nothing to me, or the little gunslinger! This was a GREAT OPPORTUNITY for that father to teach A LITTLE GUN SAFETY!

I have an embarrassing one that happened a year ago. Basically me and my grandfather were out at the range, he gave me his AKM and was telling me to shoot. As I raised the rifle and was about to pull the trigger I saw two people walking out in the firing range trying to setup targets, in my mind I said "oh shit I can't shoot yet there's people out there." So I followed basic gun safety I took my finger off the trigger, and pointed the muzzle to the ground as I turned around and tried to say "Hey I can't shoot yet there's people out there." But my grandfather was freaking out screaming "GET BACK GET BACK" over top of me as I was trying to tell him why I couldn't shoot yet. The people who walked out at the range just stared at us, I felt pretty embarrassed to say the least and is one of the reasons I don't shoot with him anymore.
@killerratchet1973
@killerratchet1973 7 жыл бұрын
ModestestMouse If memory serves me correct, I think "get back" was basically telling me to turn back to where I was originally facing. Which I couldn't do of course due to what was mentioned above, looking back to me it just seems like he just wanted to "correct" me to come off as being better than me and come across that he knows more. That isn't the first time something like that happened by the way. I remember he told me a story of a friend he knows shot himself in the leg. With the way he was telling it, he came across as being very superstitious and acted like the gun just fired for no reason. At first I thought maybe he just didn't have a holster, and maybe me moved his leg which caused the trigger to pull. But then he put in a detail that was missing in his story, and I was able to put the pieces together. Basically he tried to draw from his waist/holster or whatever, and he must've pulled the trigger and shot his leg. When I pointed that detail out he kinda just stayed silent, and didn't acknowledge what I said. Guess it didn't fit his narrative.

The other day I drove 45 mins to my range and I had to zero some rifles, one being my new AR15 build and I just put a awesome 18in BCM ionbond barrel in it. When I got to zeroing the rifle I was like ok let me check the screws on my AD recon mount to make sure they are secure and make sure they are torqued down. I used the wrong torque specs on the mount and ending up stripping one of the screws on the mount. I was upset that I didn't get to see how the barrel grouped but i still got a bunch of other guns zeroed. Got my AR build back out a few weeks later and it shoots lights out with my 77gr handloads, BCM barrels are outstanding. Also I sent my scope mount back to American Defense MFG. They have absolutely outstanding customer service they replaced my mount no questions asked extremely quickly they are a fantastic company.

My worse day on the range was when my son had a Glock model 40 10mm Long slide blow up. It fired out of battery. It blew the trigger out, magazine blew out, frame broke, the case head separated. My son’s arm, hands ,and face were bleeding and I didn’t know what happened. Glock customer service would not fix or replace the gun. I paid $800 for the gun at Bud’s Gun Shop new. I lost the $800 investment. I will never own another Glock. My son had pieces of brass in his face. Fortunately he did not lose his sight or fingers. It was a very bad day. I had a bad PMR-30 from Keltec too. They did replace it at no cost. Keltec makes poor quality guns but they do provide support. Glock does not provide any support, they have a terrible attitude.

You guys mention "bad ammo" and I too have encountered the bad ammo gremlin at the range, but shouldn't a good gun work with any ammo? It would be like buying a pan that only works with certain steak, a car that only works with one brand of gasoline, or a hammer that only works with certain nails. This is especially true for .22lr guns, when you are forced to buy the pricier CCI instead of bulk (for function, not accuracy) its just not as good a gun.

You're taking it to hyperble; I didn't mean to imply diesel in a gasoline car is how it should be, just as I'm not implying a Ruger 10/22 should be able to also fire 7.62. But if I bought an AR15 and it can only run Match grade hand loaded ammo for reliability, then that means its just a well made rifle.

Sizukun1 i think the poibt your trying to make is weird. If your talking about the pistol not working well with certain makes sense because of the mechanism it uses to rechamber. Its kind of sensitive. If your talking about the 1903 all i can say is guns cant fix human error with rounds. Foul case or primers making the gun act poorly doesnt mean its not a well made arm.

I can't run Sig ammo in my 10mm. It's not powerful enough to cycle the gun. That's what they mean by bad ammo
@Sizukun1
@Sizukun1 7 жыл бұрын
No; take .22lr guns. Many manufacturers recommend CCI minimags because they're known to be the best, consistent, and reasonably more powerful ammo. If you sent a gun back for warranty work for FTW, FTF, and cycling problems and they refuse to work on it because you don't use CCI, that means the gun probably has other issues. I understand remington golden bullets are crap, but when I have several guns that run it fine and one specific gun doesn't, then that tells me its the gun's fault.

Yeah, just had one of these on this past Thursday, which was my birthday. I took my daughter and her fiance to shoot. I brought one of my wife's Beretta Storms, a Ruger MK III, and one of my Glocks. The Glock ran flawlessly, except I literally broke a 17 +2 mag. The Ruger shot well, except for the Remington bulk Thunderbolt ammo was not ejecting the casing. Finally, the Beretta had one mag where the spring was sticking and loose causing jams. The second mag worked, but man it was crazy...still a good day.

Bad range days. Two times I've had people walk down rage, while others on the line are shooting. One old guy, with his wife and kids, walked out on the pistol firing line, to change his target. Ten other people where shooting. I was pulling the trigger, as I saw him walk by me. WTF? Guns are machines, they will fail.

I had taken the boys out shooting, same day the stepdaughter went out on her first date. By the time I got around to cleaning the last of the guns we had out that day it was getting late. Stepdaughter steps through the front door twelve minutes late. Just as I had finished cleaning my 45/70 break action. I looked up and with a straight face I drooped an empty brass into the chamber and I say, I was just coming to look for you. You know how big a 45/70 round is. I was just joking but I thought the boy was going to faint right there.

Many shooters are malformed in the discipline from the beginning, bypassing the flintlock and forming poor habits with rim fires, few youth are rewarded or denied their meals based on their skill at arms, and they fail to regard every cartridge as sacred, their muscle memory and oneness with the firearm is not engrained before moving on to other calibers.Cheek weld, breath control trigger control sight picture sight alignment body position to target, all of this is disregarded and then the rifle is blamed, the spear and arrow never suffered from this much blame. You send the lead to the target, how it is sent is your domain.

Sometimes if I take a gun out (especially a pistol) and I’m not hitting the right of a barn, I’ll go back the drawing board and assess what I did wrong. Sometimes it’s me...so should I throw a given gun under the bus and basically give you guys the wrong outlook. Which is more of a disservice?

So I have a Mossberg 590 that I've put a UTI adjustable stock and pistol grip on. Went trap shooting with some friends from work and they REALLY liked shooting my rig. Well one of my friends got done shooting a set with my 590 and brought the gun close to his chest, pointing the muzzle upwards for safety. When he did this, the stock quite simply slid off the buffer tube, falling to the ground. Come to find out the retaining screws came out and got completely lost! That pretty much caused us to end our range day at Lowe's replacing the missing screws with ones that actually worked!

Each time I would go out I had to make a couple shot around 150 or closer so even be on the paper. So on a $20 box of 139gr whitetail Ispend $15 in getting it zeroed, and $5 having fun. And when I perform as well as the gun can I got a .35 MOA at 400 yards. Got got new rings but have not tried it out.

Great gun gripe! I've been reading General Patton biographies and he once said that as a very young man in Army marksmanship training with both rifle and revolver, he was taught to be very calm and still before squeezing the trigger. He said that being calm is easier said than done in a combat situation, but he agreed with his basic training instructors about holding a gun very still right before taking a shot. There is a video on KZbin of Patton soon after WWII participating in a shooting competition in Sweden. You can see in the film how calm and still his aim was. He won first place in the competition, against professional shooters. FYI, he went into the military because his ancestors on several sides of his family were killed in action as Confederate soldiers in the Army of Virginia. He said he felt like following their example of heroism.

Thankfully IWI's customer service was amazing and they covered the cost to ship it in and I had it back 4 weeks later good as new. Also when it happened it was interesting how it blew out the mag out of the magwell and so the explosion was directed out the mag well and ejection port and saved me from injury.

Rarely have bad days at the range, but had one recently. Bought myself a JM stamped Marlin 1894 in 44 magnum for Christmas and loaded up some ammo for it (cant afford to pawn a kidney to buy factory ammo!). On first trip to the range with it I was getting very extreme keyholing and innaccuracy at 15 yards, shots were never closer than 6-8 inches to my point of aim. Was pretty concerned and was wondering if thats why it was on sale (bought it on consignment). So I immediately went and bought some factory ammo and came back and it shot without issues. Eventually figured out that the powder I was using had too quick of a burn rate. So it was concerning at the time but a learning experience in the end.

We could not get it to group, but to make matters worse the range's video equipment wasn't working so we had to walk it. We walked that 100m range so many times, and after 2.2km we figured out that the base and rings were all loose just a bit so the scope was shifting with each shot.

I've only had one bad range day: I went shooting outdoors in -37 degree Fahrenheit weather (~-48 degrees with windchill). Earplugs and ear muffs hearing protection shattered in the cold. Your body heat was the only thing that kept the hearing protection from shattering. Due to the cold, the rubber butt pads of three guns cracked. The rubber on the gun cases fell apart. Multiple other things cracked, shattered, or broke. That was the day that we learned that rubber, plastic, glass, and even some cheap metal suffers immensely when it gets crazy cold. I am lucky enough to have not had a catastrophically bad range day.

My worst day at the range was when I was shooting my AR after it had been sent back twice to the factory for repair for extraction issues and 20 rounds in, I got the same failure to extract. I forgot to wear gloves when using my ram rod to punch out the spent casing and when taking the rod out, burned my hand and in doing so, threw the rod down range. Range officer had to call a ceasefire just to retrieve the rod. Had to send the gun back for the third time. In the end was a head spacing issue, got a new barrel all is good.

Worst day: bought a used Savage 308. After checking alignment visually and with a rod, first shot baffle strike in my 30P-1. Unsuppressed it was hitting the dirt instead of the target at 25 yards. Appears previous owner tried to time a brake with a wrench and pipe. ended up cutting the barrel down from 22" to 16.5" to make it work. last range trip: sighting in Thompson Machine Operative TD. Forgot the tiny allen wrench to adjust the seeall open sight so one group in the corner of the target and i was done. Slapped on the Thor-hd thermal scope and there's a horizontal line across the screen that's a different color than the rest that won't reset. one pixel high and all the way across appears to be a negative of the rest of the picture. Machine gun shoot a few years ago, got 40S&W ammo mixed in with the 45. 40 loaded in my FNX45 Tactical magazine, chambered, and even fired. Didn't hurt the pistol but the bullet did flips through my Osprey 45 and took huge chunks out of the baffles and end cap. luckily the serialized part was unharmed and silencerco customer service is amazing. good as new in a week for the cost of shipping.

Bought a y1903 Greek Mannlicher-Schonauer. Took it to the range. With PPU ammunition (usually does well for me) I could not connect with anything except the dirt backstop. I moved back to 20 yards or so to make sure the sights were on. Fired a careful aimed shot from a rest. The round I fired printed perfectly over the aiming mark about one inch high. Sideways. (Could tell the bullet by it's profile!) I did some other things (checks), the barrel looked passible, but the rifling was worn bad. I made a sporter out of it. Very little is worse when remembering to take all the bits and pieces to the range (doing load testing) and the cotton-pickin' chronograph will not work. Yes, I did have extra batteries.

I spent 200 plus rounds at 25 yards trying to get it on the gong at 100. Kept having to aim low to get it to hit the top of the gong. Could not for the life of me figure out why I couldn't zero the thing. Turns out I had misheard my dad's statement and had been setting it an inch HIGH at 25 which is close to a 300 yard zero with that cartridge.

Was doing an IPSC comp and my gun would fire once then jam, happened 8 times that day due to bulged brass! I eventually got through it, thankfully it was just a club practice! Keep up the good work, love from Down Under!
