Surplus ammo is very cheap(440 rounds for about $97 shipping and all) but it is corrosive so you have to clean right after shooting so it doesn't rust but really can't go wrong with it. It seems like a lot of people start with this gun and I don't blame them at a 7.62x54R round it's perfect for hunting or just taking to the range to shoot. Right! a persons very first firearm should be a .22 caliber rifle. But, not a semi-auto. It should be what I was taught on at age 9, a single-shot, bolt action with a separate cocking piece on the bolt, a kid-sized Winchester and a full-sized Stevens. ( I also own a kid-sized falling-block, an early 20th Century Stevens, with a heavy trigger, and a large external hammer, that has to be cocked.) BEFORE you do any actual shooting, you MUST be taught to handle guns safely, by someone who knows MORE about it than YOU do, until the safety precautions become second-nature, and are followed with absolute consistency. Only THEN should you be taught to actually shoot, and only after plenty of shooting with the .22, should you try your hand at larger calibers and more complex actions. Great site. Keep it up.

I'm teaching my 4 year old daughter with an unloaded air rifle and spring pistol. I know that I know that I know they are unloaded because I bought them from the store and never put anything in them. And even she learns the safety aspect of it I'll let her actually put bbs downrange

My first was a 686+ 3 inch. Love it, still have it. Carried it for a while, it was definitely practical as at the time I was really into country kayaking. It was able to handle hard cast 357 or 38 shot shells. Great gun. But in my opinion any 357/38 double action revolver or a 9 mm duty style pistol is the way to go. Something fairly cheap and easy to shoot but also something that can be reliable used in the self-defense environment.

I consider my Remington 7600 Police in .308 with 10 rnd mags a 'good gun', or the several bolt action and lever actions I own 'good guns', and now that I have spent the money on getting my IAC M-87 lever action shotgun reliable it is a 'good gun'. Just because the asshole Government has placed restriction on firearm ownership doesn't preclude you from doing your best to maintain ownership. Play their game, be politically active and try to get the fucking hoplophobic laws repelled.

+Orion Can get an AR15 here in NZ when it has a thumbhole stock and no bayonet lug, not allowed High cap magazine either but you can get it on your standard licence. However it's restricted by cost, 3600 dollars really stops people from buying them unless you are a real enthusiast. But you can get the kind of rig here: www.trademe.co.nz/sports/hunting-shooting/rifles/centrefire/auction-1038682913.htm

mobstamaniac yeah mate I have often looked at the gear NZ'ers can get, to be honest it makes me quite depressed. High capacity mags are great, but I am not that upset about our 10 rnd (cat A license) or 15 rnd mag limit (for Cat B) restrictions, I have rarely emptied my mag out while hunting and if you have few mags (I have 4 KKK 10 rnd mags for my Remington 7600, along with 2 factory 4 rnd mags) a simple mag change keeps you shooting.

My first gun was a Ruger 8301, still shoots like a dream. Only issues I have is when I run crap ammo through it, but one of my favorite parts of shooting is cleaning the guns after so that doesn't faze me at all. I like it better than my 10/22 cause I like to shoot subsonic rounds out the back door at squirrels and I don't think the 10/22 would cycle them really well. With a bolt, I never have to worry about any of that.

I've shot a lot over the years, but never owned my own until recently. I picked up a Ruger mini-14 about two weeks ago. Sadly I haven't been able to take it to the range yet, but I've fired other .223/5.56 rifles and felt this to be a great fit for me. Low recoil, extremely easy to field strip and clean, reliable garand-style action. I plan on picking up a .308 for hunting, or possibly buying a Mosin and updating it a bit. Great vid!

It'll kill them, but you shouldn't. They never carry rabies (seriously, like single digit number of cases in history, ever), they help get rid of carrion, they aren't mean enough to pose much threat to dogs, cats, etc., they eat literally thousands of ticks each every season, and they tend to run other, more harmful vermin off. If they're not directly causing you problems somehow, you should leave opossums alone.

I want to get a gun but I'm in California and they have strict gun laws. I'm almost 21 and going to live by myself. Is there a way I can still get a permit and conceal carry? :C Sorry.... new to guns.
@Sisdabom9 жыл бұрын
Dax Corsiar It will all depend on your laws in whatever state you reside in. I personally don't know anything about gun laws in California. That you will have to look up yourself but if you can get a carry licence I suggest finding a gun range near you that will let you rent firearms first to find out the recoil and feel of what you are wanting to buy. Just try to be sure beforehand because 99% of the time firearms and ammunition are nonrefundable. P.S. Today was actually my first gun buy as well. (Mosin Nagant)
@michaelalexeyev9959 жыл бұрын
Gun permit yes, conceal carry permit almost impossible in california. California is a may issue state, which is basically that even if an applicant meets all the requirements for a ccw, the application still might (and most likely will) be denied. Here in NJ for instance, less CCW's are issued in one year than in one weekend in Virginia.

Would a M1911 be a good first gun?
@AnElevatorFart10 жыл бұрын
The reason the Military doesn't use it anymore is because it's a hard gun to use in pretty much every way. If it's hard for soldiers to learn how to use it it's probably too much gun for anyone. Go with something a little less fearsome for your first gun.
@solouroboros10 жыл бұрын
A 1911 is a very complicated gun. Watch someone break it down......it's got a LOT of little parts. Not really easy to maintain and break down to clean completely. It's just got a cult following, really. Go for something simple, like one of the SW glock copies. Or, if you want real simple, a nice revolver like a .38 special or one of the new Rhinos, which are nifty but pricey.
@GundamGamingx10 жыл бұрын
In all actuality the main reason the US Armed Forces stopped using the 1911 was primarily due to its prolonged use since it was first produced. If it was in fact as "complicated to use" as you both are claiming then it would not have been in service as long as it was. I am partially at fault for not clarifying my initial post so let me do so now. What I should have said was is a modernized version of the 1911 series a good starter for my son. Seeing as how both of you probably don't like the 1911 series for your own personal reasons I will use my own experience with it instead of your biased advice. But I do thank you for your input none the less.
@solouroboros10 жыл бұрын
Wingzerox02 I've done full disassembly and cleaning on glocks and 1911's, sigs and rugers. I'll take a glock any day for the ease of maintenance. That's what I meant when I said it was an overly complicated gun.
@GundamGamingx10 жыл бұрын
solouroboros I too have disassembled glocks, sigs, 1911's, rugers, berretta's etc. And I can say with 100% accuracy that 1911's are extremely easy to disassemble and reassemble. Because if they were as "difficult" to maintain then they would not have been used from 1911 - 1985 and are still used today (though not as the standard but still in use) So basically the reason you dislike the 1911 series is because you feel they are to "complicated" to maintain which they are not. Don't get me wrong I love my glock and my berretta but my 1911 is as easy to maintain as the others. And again your biased opinion is noted but I will go with my own experience.

i don't get why it's just assumed that a first gun has to be a 22. it's so condescending and patronizing to assume that a grown man can't handle a larger cartridge. maybe the first gun you SHOOT should be a 22, so that you can work up in terms of recoil. but if someone has already rented guns and practiced at the range, there's really no reason he needs a 22 for his first gun. if someone is worried about self defense i would recommend a semi-auto handgun in 9mm, .40, or .45 ACP for a first gun. THEN, i might suggest a 22 for practicing target shooting, since the ammo is cheaper. i wouldn't give someone an AR if they haven't shot a gun before, sure. but if someone has practiced shooting before, and is now looking for their first gun to actually own, there's no reason not to get a heavy caliber handgun or a full powered rifle, even an AR-15 variant. once they get a more serious gun they're not gonna fuck with the 22 again anyway... so what's the point in buying one? rent a 22 at the gun shop, practice with it, etc... why buy it? it's inferior for virtually every practicum except target shooting and squirrel hunting. in a SHTF situation, everybody acts like the 22 is so great. i wouldn't take my chances with a 22. i'd want a real rifle for any situation where i need to defend myself from humans, at range. and for hunting, i'd want to be using a crossbow anyway. yeah the 22 is great for small game but a crossbow is way better, and it's quiet. in the apocalypse you're not going to be wanting to use a gun for hunting, period. and in a rule of law self defense situation a 22 is even worse. yeah there's no better cartridge for practice and target shooting, but that doesn't mean a shooter's first gun HAS to be a 22.

I told my parents I'm wanting to get a gun and they were ok with it (they should be because my mom grew up around guns, my dad as far as I know didn't but he knows a fair amount about them) but my dad said go with a .22. I'm think why on earth!? Maybe if I was 13 I'd love it but come on. A Glock 19 and a rifle that's a bit more powerful than a 22 perhaps .30.30 or .223. I'm not an expert but just something not astronomically expensive with handguns between 400/520 and rifles 600/750 dollars. Y'all have any suggestions?

I just bought my first gun: a Springfield Armory XD-9 Mod. 2. I wanted something good on which to learn and was told 9mm's are a great choice. I wanted a reasonable cost of ammunition and price point between $350-$450. I also wanted something to carry concealed if I ever decided I wanted to. Just as in my business life whether I'm bidding or pricing, I never take the cheapest or most expensive option. Usually the best value is found somewhere in between. Finally, I made the decision based on how it felt in my hand. The critical factor was that I felt it was easier for me to eject the magazine on the SA, more so than the other manufacturers. I practiced dry firing in my living room and learned all I could by myself and didn't even load the gun until I was in a beginning safety course. Now I have been to the range a couple times by myself and plan to take a LTC class in the near future. As of September 1, 2017, the price of applying for a LTC in Texas will decrease from $140 to $40. I'll gladly wait the 86 days as of this writing. $100 is $100, after all. I still have no idea if I'll actually carry, but at least I'll have the option.
