@TwoCentsRugby I met Tadhg Furlong yesterday, in a pub in Dolphins Barn in Dublin, very unexpectedly for that type of place. He was sitting there having a pint of Guinness and a toastie, as you do (as I'm doing right now actually) and I thought he looked too small to be Tadhg Furlong. But there he was, and me, in a nearly empty pub, and we had a grand aul chat. He's a lovely lad, a softly spoken gentleman. He says he'll be back to business in January. Love your videos, top quality work, and Two Cents Gets Distracted too, great craic altogether. Keep it up, Happy Christmas 🎄 and Happy New Year too. Good luck 👍

Their genetics & NZ rugby pedigree makes them the players they are, if you are playing for NZ Maori you are an elite NZ rugby player & only 1 step away from the AB's. This is the equivalent of a kid who was born & raised in Ireland playing rugby, went through an academy, played for Leinster & Ireland B then left to play in NZ & after qualifying, played for the AB's & us claiming to have made him the player he is. Great analysis. I think a lot of the use of players reflects the Irish system. We don’t have the numbers of a France or South Africa so we need to get more from less elite players. We can rest players more during the season so they can compensate for longer minutes during internationals. Also we are very dependent on the national team winning for the business model to work
@gideonvanniekerk4252
@gideonvanniekerk4252 Күн бұрын
The truth is that everyone thinks South Africa have so many players to choose from but this is not true. The most popular sport in South Africa is soccer. Rugby only gets played at Model C schools and is only available to a small portion of the population. Moreover, for caucasians rugby is the primary sport. Caucasians only make up 8% of the entire population. We have a 60% youth unemployment rate - so why people think we have such a large portion of players to choose from is just ridiculous.
@Feeereemeers
@Feeereemeers Күн бұрын
@ that’s really interesting thank you. I think I made the point about elite players which I hope you don’t mind me commenting that South Africa so produce a good number of (even other national teams benefit from this). Rugby also does not rank particularly highly as a participation sport in Ireland where a relatively small number of rugby schools account for the vast majority of players we produce. There are a lot of rugby fans which is a newish phenomenon but the majority of these people have never played the game to any particular level or had much grass roots rugby exposure.

@@gideonvanniekerk4252 Rugby is a fringe sport in every country except New Zealand. @@JTAIT-b7g those countries have population sizes that are similar if not larger than South Africa (France, England)? Also look at the wealth of those unions compared to South Africa. Please remember that whilst you mention how tiny those countries are - you once again forget how poor half the population of South Africa is. I repeat “60% of the youth are unemployed”. When considering the populations of other nations such as Australia, France, England, etc - it’s far easier for someone to get access to sports facilities and coaches etc in schools .

Regarding the "Age of player" statistic. A historic feature of Irish internationals is that they get their first cap when they are MUCH older than is usual (Jonny Sexton didn't get his first cap until he was 26). Further, they tend to prolong their careers - so you have far fewer hanging up their international boots at 30 or 31 - as is a typical feature of International players in the Southern Hemisphere. There is some suggestion that "Celtic" bodies mature later than "Polynesians" - though that may just be "pundit talk"... In any case, both Jack Crowley and Sam Prendergast have made the leap to International Rugby at far younger ages than most of their predecessors...

Strange year for Ireland with all bar Fiji high profile tier 1 games. Some of the stats are even enforced through injury or absence (Sheehan/Furlong/JGP/Aki/Hansen/Keenan). Feel for some of the lads that came in and did well, then moved back out of game time (McCloskey/Nash). Feels a settled side when all fit, new blood needs even more opportunity imho. Interesting tour to Eastern Europe next summer that will be crucial for the next cycle.

Andy Farrell has a philosophy where you have to earn you're stripes and as a result doesn't just hand out caps like confetti compared to other teams, that's why he uses Emerging Ireland/Ireland XV to look at players and if they impress there or in training they'll get a chance in the first team like Prendergast/G.McCarthy this autumn. As a result though you're more likely to get impressive performances out of these players under these circumstances when they have to work for their cap than if its handed to them like, for example, Joe McCarthy & Jack Crowley in 2024 6N...got their first proper starts v France and looked right at home.

Many thanks for your homework. Surprised at the number of new caps being awarded by some countries. Like NZ and IRL , keep it tight I say, the honour is mighty and should be well earned. How many of the new SA caps are truly worthy of being called Springbok ? As for IRL, we have many lads playing a high standard of Schools rugby. Our U20 record is improving all the time, despite our relative physical lightness. Most young lads move through Provincial Academies that are top notch (and in the case of the Leinster Academy, World Class) with excellent coaching and expertise. Their Provinces routinely qualify for the knock out stages of the URC or Europe, which is a great environment to develop in. The recently finessed concept of an Emerging IRL XV is a good innovation. It’s deliberately a testing and closely monitored touring environment for players. Then you earn your cap. I think it’s a great platform for staying in the World Top 6 indefinitely and to win, one fine day, a World Cup.

One of the issues with Ireland people bring up is age and who takes over for retirement of key players, for me Porter is an issue but the panic and meltdown over Sexton mainly overseas is a bit of mischief I believe, Jack Crowley, Sam Prendergas, and Kerin Fawley were all there already,there is backup to them too in Jack Murphy and even young Butler in Munster ,many of Emerging Ireland team you have seen Kendellen,Jack Aunger,both Adogbo brothers, the other Prendergas brother, Gleeson ,Matt Devine at scrum half in Connacht will play for Ireland he is 22 years old ,Im sure I left others out here ,watch the Champions Cup in the next few weeks! Some will put their hands up and push into the reckoning......I keep saying too Calon Doris was doing his secondary school exams during the 2019 World Cup...had not heard of him outside Connacht and Leinster then... Ollie Jager will be in the reckoning soon too,as will Dan Sheehan...change is afot change can be good or bad, we will see in 2025..

A 10 test match vs a 14 match sample size and the quality of opposition will have a big impact. Ireland will likely use a lot more next year because of the lions and the teams they will play in the summer. Before this review I would have said Farrell needs to focus on loose head, (Jack Boyle or Sam Illo) no.7 (Ruadhán Quinn or put Doris there and bring in Coombs) open side and 13 for depth. If Osbourne becomes a 15 it would make sense as we have a few quality centres coming through (Jude Postlethwaite, Cathal Ford, Hugh Gavin).

I'm less worried about our depth than I am about the ages of some of our starters and their blocking of minutes to those behind them. For instance, if POM starts the 6n I'll be pulling my hair out. The depth chart across all the positions is pretty good - even when taking the age of current starters into account - as we have some very good young players coming through. LH - Boyle, P McCarthy, Usanov are all ones to watch in the coming years, but for now we're doing ok with Porter, Loughman and O'Toole Hooker - Sheehan, Kelleher, G McCarthy and Stewart are all around for another 5-10 years. Lee Barron will be another one to watch. TH - while Bealham and Furlong are getting on a bit Jager, Clarkson and Niall Smyth (a name for the future) have plenty of time left Lock - McCarthy and Ryan have plenty of fuel in the tank even if Beirne and Henderson are the wrong side of 30. Izuchukwu, Baird and youngsters like O'Connell and Spicer can hopefully fill any gaps in years to come Back row - as mentioned POM needs to be eased out. He's been a great servant but isn't consistently at the pace of international rugby anymore. Izuchukwu, Aherne, Deegan, Premdergast, Coombes, Kendellen, Hodnett, Timoney Sheridan etc can all come in and do a job in the event of any injuries to what I think should be our backrow quartet in any squad (JVDF, Doris, Conan, Baird) Halfbacks - we're in good shape here with Crowley, prendergast,, H Byrne, Casey, Blade and the likes of Gunne and Murphy coming through. JGP will be impossible to replace for any team in fairness Centres - Osborne is a real depth chart success story recently and keep an eye out for the likes of Cathal Forde, Hugh Gavin and Jude Postlethwaite also. Ringrose and Henshaw are as good as ever while Aki and McCloskey aren't finished just yet. Wingers - Lowe is getting on a bit and is kinda unique, so he'll be a big loss. Hopefully stockdales recent resurgence continues and JOB, Larmour, Nash, Hansen, and the likes of Tommy O'Brien (if he ever gets some luck with injuries) will keep things ticking along nicely FB - Keenan, Frawley and in years to come there's a young lad (name withheld 😊), who hasn't even played for Leinster yet, who I think will be getting capped for Ireland at fullback within 2 years

Irish pool is small. Therefore rotation will be slow. In the last year they have started. Remember gaa has 200 000 players. Rugby is fringe. Will never have numbers if sa and nz Part if rotation is accepting lising games. Ireland coukd rotatw uf they accept lising 5n and . Given the outcry of ireland performance in autumn when they pkayed a fewvnew pkayers and underperformed....

I'm starting to sour on Farrell ... not only because I'm a Munster partisan, but more so that he is sticking with people he prefers personally rather than relying on form--contrary to what he often says. Since he has come back from injury, Hansen has gotten all minutes on the wing, with Nash getting absolutely none--despite Hansen's relatively poor form and Nash's excellence in the Six Nations. As far as Lowe goes, I can't recall his last great 50/22 with the left boot and he seems underpowered at present. Keenan has long been a safe pair of hands, but when has he ever been known to really carve a line through defenders? Whereas there are a number of overlooked back three in the other provinces who aren't even been given a shirt once ... so I'm worried about our future.

It’s interesting seeing Ireland despite their systems, having a lot of players who’ll either retire or may not make it to the next World Cup let alone after: James lowe, Bundee Aki, Jamieson Gibson Park, Peter O’mahoney, Iain Henderson, Tadgh Furlong, Tadgh Beirne, Rob Herring, Stuart McCloskey, Robbie Henshaw, Jack Conan, Conor Murray, Finlay Beelham. It’s a bit concerning. Also side note as a Scot, how come Scotland gets all the noise about “foreign” players (though I don’t think it matters at all about any who have heritage) when the Irish have more then the Scot’s now? 😂 (3 - 2).

I wonder if Porter would get any game time if he was a South African prop. I reckon I'd rather see Ox, Kitsy, Steenekamp, Du Toit and even Koch play ahead of him at loosehead. Am I wrong?

Yeah Porter has a bigger engine and better hands and is very aggressive at scrum time. His only flaw is he can be too aggressive and attack at the wrong time.

@ciaranbrk it's frustrating that props are getting pinged for mullering your opposite man. Maybe our issue is at TH. If we have a TH who can keep up with Porter the refs would be more sympathetic

@ciaranbrk I don't rate him as a scrummager, he doesnt have the raw power to get dominance he has to play dirty and hope the ref doesnt notice. He definately gets stuck into it in the loose though, can't fault his effort.

@@michaelmoynihan9591 Mate when Porter, and Furlong played for Leinster against the Bulls in the URC semi final, Wilco Louw and Steenekamp destoyed them in the scrum. I like Porter for his attitude and aggression but I won't rate him as a top scrummager.

As a South African I love this. Really happy to see Sexton back. Andy is obviously trying to ensure another quarter final exit in Australia.
