This song is an absolute classic. 100 years from now, it's still gonna be as beautiful as it was when it was first heard on the airwaves. Irene Cara is amazing!

I attended a school from first to 12 grade that had been established to kids in the arts or like me, whose parents were and had to travel. My dad was a master carpenter on Broadway shows and NYC TV studios. He could be away for six months at a time, and sometimes I travelled with him. I was a senior when Irene was just a very little kid. We had talent shows every year, and I will never forget this little girl, she was like a human dynamo maybe 6 or 7, dancing her heart out to "Shaft". Irene was amazing then, and always.

Nice story. She is definitely so unique. Her parents seemed to really encourage her to perform and she seemed to have all the right aspects to be a legendary singer.

The outfit is so 80's. All the metallic gold. But you can not underestimate Irene's talent and Beauty. This song brings back so many memories. Thanks for the post.

This song was an immediate sensation after Irene's "Fame" and "Out Here On My Own".. I have been a huge fan of Irene Cara since 1980 even when I was just a 5-year old kid. Even before superstars like Madonna and Whitney Houston, Irene was simply just an amazing voice incomparable with any other prominent artists now and then. She simply deserved to be a Grammy and multi-platinum record awardee in her heyday. It's so sad she disappeared in the limelight to obscurity after that due to personal and career struggles and issues and sadly enough ended up dead alone in her home at 13481 Del Prado Drive Largo Florida USA on Nov 25, 2022. ✝️R.I.P. Ms. Irene Cara Escalera (Mar 18, 1959 - Nov 25, 2022) ⚰️💀🥀🪦🕊️🙏✝️

I don’t know if it’s true but she found out that she was not being paid fairly and she sued her record label and they had to pay her but they started spreading rumors and lies about her and it ruined her reputation as a performer by saying she was a drug addicted and she was difficult to work with. I think someone was very jealous and they didn’t want her to become a superstar because she was definitely on her way to becoming a superstar performer because she definitely had everything to make it

She was definitely on her way to becoming a superstar and this is just my opinion someone was very jealous of her and they didn’t want her to become a superstar .Because she was beautiful and talented and she had the it factor .It’s soo sad that she didn’t get to achieve her dreams

I was in college when I heard this. I remember the Zetas using this melody for one of their songs. I let them borrow my Irene Cara album, and I remember them singing their song outside my dorm window when a line was on as they returned my album. It was one of those moments that is etched in my memory. They sounded so pretty

Irene Cara played the ill-fated Dorothy Dandridge B4 Halle Berry did as well as a role as Alex Haley's mother in "Roots the Next Generation." This song reminds me of my first (non-theatrical) kiss. Memory as sweet as this song.

Another wonderful performance by Irene, but so overdone with the visual effects which was a disservice to her talent and beauty. Yes the sequined, sparkling dress was so ‘80’s, but that was enough. Her just standing there in the light would have been more powerful, focusing on her beauty and voice. But thankful we have this video just the same. R.I.P. Irene, know you were loved by many.
