Canned foods can have a really long shelf life. In 1865 the Steamboat Bertrand sunk. In 1968 it was found and recovered. Many items found on the boat were well preserved. In 1974 testing was done on the canned food found on the boat. It was still edible; it was not as nutritious, but it was edible. Just use some common sense. Is the can damaged, rusting, leaking, then throw it out. If not, open the can and use your senses. Does it look okay? Does it smell okay? Try a bit. Does it taste okay? Chances are it's okay to consume.

I agree 👍 with a closed lid on can foods do last but tomatoey canned products only last about 3 years. Pineapple because of the acid only last two years. I just opened a can of blueberry pie filling that was dated 2016 and it was as good as just buying it, I made a blueberry cheesecake with it.

@@terrychrist1383 Yeah, even though acidic canned foods have thin plastic liners sprayed into the cans, they don't last as long as non-acidic foods. I know that from my own experiences that canned chicken can be used at least 2 yrs past the best by date. And even though it comes in plastic jars and not glass or canned, I have eaten peanut butter that was at least a year past the best by date. Most surprising of all is that the plain Quaker oatmeal that comes in the cardboard tubes(and obviously cardboard is air permeable) I have also eaten 1 to 2 years past best-by date and it tasted fine.

Feeding 5 adults here, but just counted today and have over 1200 jars of canned food, meats I found on sale, and veggies from our garden that I have processed. 200 of them are the meat, with each of them being a meal or two meals. I also just canned 117 quarts of various soups for only $65.00, that's equivalent to 258 cans of Campell's soup, but yet I'd never be able to afford the cost of that many cans of Campbell's. While it isn't a lot yet, my goal is to get us past the three month mark and move onto 6 months of food security, and hopefully in a year have a year's worth of back up. It's tough with a limited budget, but if I can do it....ya know. In the meantime, stocking up in bulk when I can as well, and I am so thankful for a husband that is supportive of my plans. I've always had food security issues, and for years just did the best we could to have a little stashed to keep my anxiety at bay, but yesterday I went to our cheapest store in town and a dozen eggs was $3.84, when a couple of weeks ago they were $2.18 and 6 months previous to that they were $1.12. I'm not sure what I am gonna do, think I need to finally bite the bullet and get me some chickens set up here in town, and yes, I'm already making plans for a coop. :)

I suspect that adding just rice and beans to your inventory would do the job. Those are items you could use along with your current supplies that would extend them. For example, if you have chicken soup in one of those jars that would feed 2 people, you could add rice and now feed 5. You can make a variety of bean soups also probably from what you have canned. Rice and beans are dirt cheap also and last for ages.

If you have meats, I recommend salting them and vacuum sealing them before throwing them into a freezer. Prevents freezer burn and lasts a hell of a long time even at refrigerator temperatures without spoiling. Gives you plenty of time to find other ways of preserving your meats.

I've been prepping for about a 1.5 yrs, maybe a little longer. I learned by following and listening to people who are life long preppers and I can say I feel good about what I have and how much I have. After listening to you, I'm impressed. You are doing about the best job of anyone I can think of for those who are just starting or want some advice. If I were to add to what you're saying, I encourage people to use long term storage by saving all their glass containers, including wine (rice and lentils) and vodka bottles. They make excellent long term storage containers. Just wash with hot water and soap, rinse and put in the over at 150 degrees for 20 mins to sterilize. Also, lastly, check out water glassing eggs. You can store eggs, un-refrigerated for up to 2 years by water glassing. Go to a local farmers market and ask for unwashed eggs. They must be unwashed, cannot be from a grocery store. You have to have what is called the bloom on the egg. Which is how the egg comes out of the chicken. Again, get instructions by watching demo's here on You Tube. You can buy Pickling Lime at Walmart or just about anywhere else. Look for large glass containers to water glass your eggs in at thrift stores, or use 5 gallon food grade buckets if you'd like to have 5 or more dozen eggs stored. It's very simple.

This week I added a 12-pack of canned bacon-flavored Spam to my working pantry. Recently added another two 25-lb buckets of red wheat grain, a 25-lb. bucket of brown lentils, a 12-lb. bucket of white soybeans and more #10 cans of freeze-dried beef and chicken, scrambled egg mix, shredded cheese, chicken flavored rice mix, butter powder, mixed soup vegetables, shredded potatoes, powdered milk alternative and sliced potatoes to my long-term food storage. Have been packaging granulated cane sugar and pink Himalayan salt in rinsed and dried empty beverage bottles. Also bought two more plastic jars of instant coffee. If hard times come and regular food becomes too scarce or too expensive, I will be using my food storage. I intend to have sweetened cafe latte at breakfast along with cheesy scrambled eggs and hashbrowns, all made from food storage. Maybe add a slice of browned Spam. Will have homemade beef or chicken and vegetable macaroni soup plus homemade rolls or biscuits or corn muffins for lunch and a vitamin fortified fruit flavored drink. For dinner it will be meat and beans in some kind of sauce over potatoes or rice or pasta. Maybe for dessert a glass of chocolate milk made from my food storage. Or maybe I will bake a peach or mango or raspberry cobbler using food storage ingredients. I will be using those #10 cans of baking mixes and pancake mixes but will also be grinding some of my wheat and other whole grains as well as some of my dried legumes to make Ezekiel bread or other baked goods. I have been practicing using various off-grid cooking methods and food storage recipes. I know my family will have nutritious meals no matter what happens with the economy, the weather or the food supply chain. Preparedness brings peace of mind. Looking for sales on food storage and buying now before prices go even higher is a hedge against inflation.

Good video overall. I am going to mention something about brown rice. No, it does not store well. Freeze drying/dehydrating cooked brown rice extends the life up to 5 years and maybe 10 if stored under perfect conditions. I think for most people, parboiled/converted rice is a better option. This is not instant rice but a steam process that is applied to brown rice before being polished. It has 80% of the nutrition of brown rice with the longevity of white rice.

Another way to store coffee is to buy the green, unroasted beans. Toss them in a pan outside (it will smoke a LOT) and stir with a wooden spoon until the "second crack" (you'll hear a cracking sound, then a second one). Cool the beans in a steel colander and shake it up a bit to remove the outside layer. Voila! Fresh roasted coffee. Green beans are good for 50 years! You will need a grinder, too. I've seen them in thrift stores cheap. I found them online at Sweet Maria's and have roasted a few of their blends. They were delicious! Coffee is important. ☕☕😃

i dont get why rainwater tanks arent more common. I live in an area that gets 16 inches of rain in a good year, with about 6000 gallons of rainwater storage and have only run out of water and had to switch over to mains supply once in the last 6 years for about 2 months, and that was during a drought when I had a heap of family visiting and taking 20 minute long showers. Plus its just better than the mains water. Barely ever need to clean your shower/bathroom because theres no calcium/crud buildup, and it tastes so much better than any tap or bottled water that you can buy IMO.

Just prepare and mix together rice, red kidney beans, tuna, and barbecue sauce. You don't need globs of barbecue sauce either, just enough to flavor it. It's very filling and can be made with things that have a decent shelf life. Will give you a decent amount of protein and fiber. Recommend ordering barbecue sauce, or any condiments, in packets if you're wanting to add it to your prep storage.
