The Twinkie was invented in the early 1930s by a man named Dewar. He wanted to make productive use of his strawberry sponge cake machinery when strawberries weren't in season. Originally the sponge cake was filled with banana cream, but it was replaced with vanilla cream due to the great World War 2 banana shortage.

Unfortunately, Hostess was acquired several years ago by another company which altered the recipes & equipment used to produce the products. It's not a joke to say that they were much better in the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s.

I live in central Pennsylvania. We had more Tastykakes because they were kinda local (Philadelphia). They are basically the same line-up of cream filled cupcakes, but they also have Koffee Kakes, Butterscotch Krimpets, and Kandy Kakes (peanutbutter cream). TastyKake also makes pies (more like a turnover) with various fillings, and a Tasty Klair (my fave). Also brownies, mini donuts, and danishes.

Ironic since banana flavored things today are rarely made with bananas. The science of flavoring has come along way, and most things that are any kind of flavored do not contain the actual item named in the flavor.

Seriously, you have GOT to get a pack of Hostess SnoBalls. They're much like the regular Hostess cupcake that you had, except that instead of chocolate frosting, they're covered with marshmallow cream (usually pink, but also green and white) imbued with coconut. Just gobble down a couple of those with a glass of cold milk, and you'll be in heaven, and shortly after in the dentist's office getting some cavities filled.

My favorite Hostess treat only existed for about five years, during the '80s. It was called a Pudding Pie, and came with either a yellow custard filling, and a chocolate outer glaze, or chocolate pudding with a hard sugar glaze, similar to that on a glazed donut. I sure do miss those babies.

Most of the snack cake companies did pies (really, they're closer to turnovers) with various fruit/pudding/curd-type fillings. Even the regional and store brands did those. Dolly Madison, the company that used to be one of the big sponsors for the Charlie Brown cartoon specials that came at holidays for 35 years or so, mostly did pies and Zingers, a sort of Twinkie-like cream-filled cake with frosting, in various flavors. Typical pies from everybody were chocolate (chocolate pudding), lemon (a sort of lemon curd), apple, cherry and "berry" (they never said what kind of berry; probably whatever was available). A Wikipedia check on Dolly Madison informs me that it's been a division of Hostessfor some years. I guess Zingers got taken over by Hostess during that period. Further Wiki-izing reveals that Hostess has recently been purchased by Smucker's, a big American jam company.

The Hostess chocolate cupcakes used to look like the ones on the box. When I was growing up, they were my favorite. Those Twinkies were part of battle rations I had in the Navy. We were having training and we had battles rations that were very old like 1947 and it was 1974 when we ate the rations. Twinkies was one item made in 1947 as I remember. That's when we all found out how long a twinkie last. Well it was not fresh but it still was ok even if it wads a little stiff.

Two days ago you reacted to a song with the opening line, "Nibblin' on sponge cake." Today you nibbled on sponge cake yourself. More than a coincidence? When I was a kid I would take the cupcakes apart and eat the components separately: the little squiggly thing on top, the chocolate frosting, the cake, and the creme filling (it's "creme" - there's not a drop of cream in it). I can't say this is the correct way to eat a Hostess cupcake. It was just me being obsessive.

Chocolate cake in America is all, as you say, "dark chocolate", I think; all the Hostess chocolate cake items are basically the same cake, though. I thought I've had just about every Hostess thing known to man...I've never even heard of Kazbars... 😆 Glad you like the Twinkie. 😁

A couple of those are new products. Originally the Twinky and others like it had banana filling and then WW2 came along. No banana imports so they switched to cream fillings which turned out to be cheaper. Hostess, especially Twinkies are great almost frozen. I found out when I kept a box in the car my senior year of high school. In the winter they almost froze. Tasted great after school in the winter. In the 70s we considered Hostess as regular food. 😅

Frosting and icing are two different things. Frosting is light and fluffy, icing is more dense, kinda like marzipan but not as dry.

In my experience as a kid, over 50 years ago, I've had Hostess Cupcakes, Ho Hos, Ding Dongs, Twinkies and Fruit Pies. All of them were heavily advertised during Peanuts specials on tv. I'm honestly not a Good Twinkies guy, but I used to like the fruit pies and the chocolate stuff. The company did briefly go bankrupt and was later bought by somebody else, so the CasBar doesn't look familiar. Another company you might want to look at for baked goods is Dolly Madison. They have some really good stuff as well.

The cakes with Peanuts characters on the packaging were all Dolly Madisonm which is now a division of Hostess; DM was the primary sponsor of the cartoon series. I suppose Hostess must have bought the company before Charles Schulz died in 2000, but since I was nearly 40 and didn't have kids, I wasn't watching the Peanuts specials as regularly as I used to, so I don't know if/when the advertising changed.

And to play on the stereotype in the Pixar movie "WALL-E" he feeds his pet cockroach a Twinkie. 🙂 On a related note, in the comedy horror movie "Zombieland", the character of Tallahassee loves Twinkies and when he funds a Hostess truck on the side of the road he's disappointed to find it's only full of Sno Balls. Ha!

It’s funny, I always hear that twinkies are featured in tv & movies but I can only think of two examples: Ghostbusters and Zombieland, the latter being a specific character trait and also pretty recent.

Is it just me or were Ding Dongs and Ho Hos better when they were wrapped in foil? And the chocolate pies were always the best! Prove me wrong. No loss in not having a snowball. The only way to eat them is to pull off the marshmallow top and eat the topping and cake separately.

When I was in college back in the late 60s, the local eatery (known as the T Room, T of Tennessee) served a desert that they called a Mongoose. No one knew where the name came from. Anyway, it was two Twinkies covered with soft serve Ice Cream with a giant pool filled with Chocolate Syrup. It was quite rich and we had to limit ourselves to one a week (sometimes two). It contributed quite a bit to the man I am today. The Kazbars and Bouncers must be more recent. I'm not familiar with them. And yes, there are Ding Dongs which are similar to the Cupcakes but covered all over with chocolate without the swirl and shaped like a fat hockey puck. And there is a knockoff called a King Don.

I've just been digging through the relevant Wikipedia pages; apparently, King Don is the Canadian branding for Ding Dongs.
