Paddy Richter Tuning is fun to play and easy to learn! In this video I show how it is great for several different styles and common positions on the harp.
I originally came up with the tuning for playing Irish music (hence the name :) It only involves a small change to the standard tuning: hole 3 blow is raised a tone (two semitones); the rest of the harps stays the same.
It works well in Cross Harp (2nd Position), Straight harp (1st Position), 3rd Position, 4th Position, 5th Position, as well as 11th and 12th Positions. You can play lots of different styles with it too: Celtic, Blues, Jazz, Bluegrass, Ethnic...

I just tuned my Hohner Special 20 to Paddy Richter tuning. An A harmonica. I tuned the 3 blow from E to F#.

Thank you Brendan for posting this! I came across this video about a year ago and by now I've tuned many my harps and my friends harps to Paddy Richter. Since then I've been playing in this tuning a lot and I often get compliments on it. Paddy Richter allows you to play many popular lead solos and melodies much more easily than standard diatonic tuning. One number I've been working on is "Time" by Pink Floyd where I use Paddy Richter in A. Best Regards from Cape Cod USA!

What a very clever simplistic, ingenious thing to do. I wish I'd thought of it. It is not the way I play however for those into this kind of thing excellent. I've always been of the opinion that in some diatonic harmonica styles at speed in certain positions it is so easy to sound out of tune and frankly you'd be better with a chromatic. This gentleman has solved a lot of problems for the diatonic in these styles of music. It certainly sorts things out in first flat position for sure. Great upload.

@hessonr Hi I think I can answer your question. Yes the bending possibilities are limited by the blow and draw notes in the same hole. If you retune hole3 blow into A, the hole3 B will only bend to somewhere around Bb, can't go down any more. That's a drawback to me, but you can still get an Ab from hole3 blow bend, if you use the half-valved model.

hey! I hope you're still interested in learning the harmonica. you want to stay way from the cheaper end of the harmonica spectrum. a hohner bluesband isn't what it used to be anymore. you may want to check out the Big River Harp. it's about $30 and is a pretty good quality harmonica to start out on. i personally, however like the Lee Oskar harps. they're modular so you can replace the reeds, combs, cover plates, and that means that you don't have to buy a new harmonica if yours gets busted

I love Eddie's playing, and met him once in the late 90's when he had all but given up due to that problem - such a pity he never learned how to do reed repairs. Stylistic versatility: I can't help it, I'm just like a magpie who picks up shiny (musical) objects :)

Great stuff ...did you know the lateEddie Clark ? He played a chromtic model and used to say they wore out quickly. I love the way you can move around styles.

Both are good in Paddy-Richter tuning. Solo Tuning on the the Lucky 13 is also a good option.

Firstly, very much enjoy your playing it was great to see you at SPAH this year! Question if I may: When you raise the 3 blow 2 pitches for paddy richter are some of the draw bends on the 3 hole lost by doing this? I was able to paddy richter a harmonica but it seems the 3 draw only has the first 1/2 step bend now. I'm just looking for confirmation that this is correct or not. Thank you for your time. Ryan
