So ... I LOVE root beer. But I've been studying this phenom literally for decades: Virtually everyone born in the US LOVES root beer (not everyone, but virtually everyone born here). Virtually everyone not born here think it's disgusting. Folks who hate it often compare the taste / smell to "my grandmother's ointment". If you find that shocking, I have 2 words for you: "Ben Gay" ... remember that ointment that was popular in the 1950-1970s? For muscle aches? It smells EXACTLY the same as modern root beer. Around the 1960s, it was found that the sassafras root that root beer(s) had been made from contained some carcinogenic compounds. Then someone discovered that you could fake the flavor of sassafras with a combination of wintergreen & peppermint and some other flavorings -- modern root beer was born -- from the same stuff used to soothe aching muscles. And it is AWESOME over vanilla ice cream.

Apparently wintergreen is used a lot in UK medicines. Wintergreen is a flavor in both Root Beer and Dr Pepper which is why people from those areas don't like it. Sort of like how people in the US might dislike grape flavored things.

I actually really dig it! Some root beers have a medicinal taste, while others have a darker, richer flavor with larger notes of vanilla in it. Its good! I have to have a taste for it, though. I'm just not going to randomly pick it up.

Not sure if it's the exact same reason for Scotland but I know in some countries their medicine has a similar taste which is why people hate it so much. Sort of like if you've had Robitussin before and someone gave you a soda that tasted like that.

Ice cream floats are catching on here in Japan, and it's especially nice with melon soda...BUT they RUIN the floats by also putting crushed ice cubes in it! All the ice cream just melts into the half-cup worth of ice and you don't get too enjoy any of it! T_T And before you ask, no, you can't really get it without ice. The soda machines are on a timer so it only fills the drink for a few seconds. If you don't have half a cup of ice, you have a third cup of soda, so they won't do that for you.
