“Frostbit” isn’t short for “frostbite”. It’s short for “frostbitten”.

If you were wondering, he said... "We hadn't much a choice in the matter." (We don't have much of a choice in the matter.) "You wouldn't be long getting frostbite." (It wouldn't be long before you developed frostbite.) Irish English bears a strong resemblance in its sentence formation and wording to Southern English ("the South" in the US).

Its ok I understood him fine. There is no such thing as an "irish accent" there are countless ones and this one is specific to parts of Ulster (Northern Ireland) its harder than southern accents as it was historically influenced by Scots speakers

I was once on a dive boat on the Great Barrier Reef. Nearly every flavor of English was represented. It was fascinating and we all had a blast listening to such variation in our mother tongue. Northern Irish was the most difficult for me as a southerner to understand. Southern England/South African the most pleasant to the ear.

As a non-native trying to learn English, this is the final boss. Edit: Okay. So fun story. Since posting this comment I've visited Ireland twice. The second time I went to a pub with an English friend. He got a bit drunk and started talking to some random folks about firearms which kind of startled me. It took me almost half an hour to realise they were talking about farms.

This comment section is very strange to me as an Irish person because this is one of the easier Northern Irish accents to understand. There's some accents from the north that sounds like a different language. Also, people don't realise that there's actually a huge variety of accents in Ireland despite how small our population is.

Two months ago down in south west Ireland , he was holed up on the lockdown, he was walking a beach and saw a lighthouse, decided it would be fun to swim out to it there and then. Off he went, and 14hrs later he was rescued from two and a half miles out at sea....
