@datinyone A brush doesn't get the long dead hair out only the under coat.

One last question, where do I stop? If you draw a line from the outside of the eye to the outside corner of the mouth? In other words, you strip the "cheek" but not the "muzzle"? His chest and neck pulled easily, the ears are done, the "top" of the head is done. I tried calling the breeder but she is on the show circuit, BIG TIME, and is not of any help. My previous IW's had fenced acreage so I never stripped them, just brushed them. I am now located rural and I'd like to maintain an easier to care for coat (stickers, burrs, etc.). Thank you, thank you for the advice.

can you use a shedding blade instead? or a shedding comb?

can this also be accomplished with a brush?.. or is it just better/easier to do it by hand?

Do you do this all over? Stripping the legs and head too, minus the beard and eye brows? Apologies, we finally just got our first after many years of waiting. She is just 5mos and I have from the top of her head, down her top line, to the base of her tail stripped. She certainly seems to love it as when I stop, she grabs my hand with her paw of mouth and pulls it back to her.

I use thinning shears on the face, but so strip the top of the head and legs. Also use shears on the chest as it hurts to pull that hair out.

At what age do you pull this puppy coat?

My IW is 8 months old and that clumpy puppy coat is NOT pulling out easily. Do I wait and keep checking it? ANY advice will be appreciated.

Keep checking it. Where is it clumpy? The chest and neck rarely pull. We scissor them.

Thanks for the reply. I gave him a HUGE bone to gnaw on while lying down. This position allowed me to get "the grip" I needed...it's coming out MUCH easier now. The rear legs were pretty easy, I was worried when his back hair seemed not to want to release. This is a project that is going to require several days and some muscle rub cream for me. Thanks again.

+Standup Broad It does take awhile. Always pull in the direction the hair grows! Good luck! :-)

Why you doing

You should never, ever strip the coat of a wolfhound! It ruins the coat forever. This lady knows nothing about the Wolfhound. A brush through every couple of days should suffice. Ive owned and showed wolfhounds for over 30 years!

If you don’t remove the coat - will it shed a lot over its lifetime?

You're absolutely wrong, it's common practice and everyone knows to strip the puppies coat sooner then later. They STINK if you don't do this, even as adults after showers, the undercoat comes out from brushing because it's thinner, but the surface is very thick and causes dirt to stay lodged in, and harbors bad bacteria. "Oh and I've owned and showed Wolfhounds for over 40 years." Easy to say on the internet right?
