Irit- you are an ideal reader of the Griffen& Sabine series. Created by illustrator Nick Bantock, it’s a series of books told no illustrated postcards& letters you can take out of the envelopes. He uses stamps, paintings, and postal ephemera to create the narrative of this mysterious correspondence. Vaguely fantastical and lusciously beautiful.

Interesting!! I think I remember seeing something of that sort, letters in a book, but I don't know if it's the series you mention. will definitely check it out!!

@ probably the same! Very playful illustration style. If you look up Nick Bantock, his influence on collage/stamping/mixed media is unmistakable- and he’s quite a good writer as well.

@ fun & mysterious and honestly crave-worthy art. Millennials missed out on really hearing about them. The 90’s had done glorious non-comics visual storytelling and it’s really marked my art, and my aspirations 💖 Anyway Bantock has a LOT of gorgeously illustrated books and y’all deserve to check them out!!! “The Venetian’s Wife” is a favorite 💖

Couldn't watch this live but it has been so much fun to watch anyway. I've just added a couple of new things to my WishList after watching though, mainly being the Diane Townsend Soft Pastel Fluro set from Jacksons, and actually, every single other set in that range 😩😝. Luckily with Black Friday happening this week, quite a few of my "WishList" items on Amazon have been a fab price. I've ordered a few books (mainly Abstract Landscape), the 60 tin of FaberCastell Pitt Pencils (I love my Carbothellos but I thought I'd give these a whirl as well), some cheap and cheerful Mungyo 64 soft pastels,(colours look nice and vibrant), Liquitex Ink set, Winsor and Newton Designers Gouache primary set, 24 pack of cool Sharpie colours. Lots of other "gifts" for other members of my family - I know, rude right? 😂. And, not only have I still got PLENTY left on my Wishlist, including Holbein AcrylGouache, Wooden drawers for my oil pastels, etc etc BUT I've just ordered (spurred on by your video) the set of 6 fluro Sennellier Oil Pastels and a cheap brand (Monte Marte) of fluro acrylic inks. How about that? 🤣🤣. Quick question Irit. Are the colour recipes in your downloadable the same ones as in the book? I've had the book for a while now and LOVE the mixing section. Cheers - Beverley x
@iritlandgraf2 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing Beverley!! Tell me more about Abstract landscapes, I'm very into that right now and haven't really been able to find books that look like must haves. Re Mungyo- I LOVE THEM!! I just got a set of 48, very atypical of me as I usually want all the colors and I regret not getting the biggest set. They are my favorite oil pastels, bar none! I have Sennelier and Schmincke and Caran D'ache and the Mungyo are my fave. Color mixes- Do you mean my watercolor freedom book? It has a mixing section but the watercolor mixing E-book is ALL mixing recipes and it has almost a 1000 mixes. So TONS more than Watercolor Freedom book. Also, I'm very easy on the refunds ;) If you're not happy, I will gladly refund you, no questions asked! I'll add the link to the video description in case you wanna grab it :)

@@iritlandgraf Absolutely NOT wanting a refund. I LOVE my Watercolour Freedom book. It is "to hand" wherever I'm arting! Congratulations on such a fab book. I know how much goes into putting a book together. I wrote and self published an alternative careers book 25 years ago. Anyhoo, like I said, the colour mixes in the book have become some of my favourites so thank you. I look forward to purchasing the mixing book as well. As far as the landscape books go, I've bought one called "Painting Abstract Landscapes" which looks v dark and serious but it's got some interesting stuff in there that can be adapted. Also "The Landscape Painter's Handbook". Do you have Lauren Wager's "Palette Perfect" books? You might like them but then you've got such a unique colour vibe going, I'd say you've found your jam! 😄 Thanks again for a fun vid. Have a brilliant weekend. Cheers from Australia x

Haha no I meant if you buy the watercolor mixing book and not happy with it, will gladly refund you :) Thanks so much for the kind words! I'll check out what you've mentioned! I think I've had the Landscape painter's handbook in my wishlist for ages and maybe even the other one... Guess I'll just press that buy button ;) I do have palette perfect! It's right next to my desk. I think it's fantastic and yet I hardly ever use it... oops. Enjoy your weekend too!!

@@iritlandgraf Hi. I bought one of the Charvin 24 half-pan sets, making a few changes to the original pans (because, why not?). Like you, I scoured the web for any information I could get regarding the (watercolour) brand, but had little luck. I think their oils and pure pigments are more popular, loved and regaled online. So, Paris. The tin (regulation black) was eye-wateringly pricey, but as I was only in Paris for a long weekend, I decided to go for it and prevent any post-purchase traumatic remorse. This meant that the very pretty smaller sets you mentioned were reluctantly avoided. Also, the gouache set I bought was equally expensive (and the sketch book). And hmmm. So there I was back home, the big game hunter with my prize(s).😎And broke. Paris was lovely - broke my heart and pocket book. Let me add that the on-site service in the shop was excellent, and the intimate setting one that would bring joy to any painter. On swatching the Charvin half pans, my initial reactions were mixed. For example, the colours aren't as bright as W&N, not as luscious as White Nights and not as powerfully pigmented as Roman Szmal. They rewet OK, and play nicely with the paper. There's a lot of PW going on; 12 of the 24 half pans had some form of that pigment in the mix (not a criticism...just what it is). Very few single pigments in the set. In general, the paints come across as quite muted and gentle, with some exquisite glowing colours. I'm particularly drawn to the Diamond Orange (PW6, PO13) and Violet Cobalt (PW4, PB29, PR122), although all the colours have their own beauty - even the Gris Vulcaine (PW4, PW6, PY8, PBk11) which I have to question why is it even there? We all have our roles to play. I will come to love it. There is a colour chart online, which I downloaded to help complete the pigment information. However it needs updating to reflect all the colours offered. Too much work! Overall, the Charvin Aquarelle colours have a definite place in my working collection. Would I buy them again? I'm not sure at this point. I'd have to see how they play with my other sets. Hope this is helpful.

Thanks so much for sharing! Lol we all want to avoid that post-purchase traumatic remorse! I believe Paris could break us all... As for your experience- yes, from the look of them I suspected they have white. Which I also am not against but it does mean one gets less pigment for the $$... We all have our role to play- love it. I may just grab a few pans or tubes from their online shop... Violet cobalt is like my signature color so I'm pretty sure I need to try their version. They have an eye for color (which makes their oil range very dangreous for people like me who love unique and beautiful convenience colors) and I will take a closer look at their watercolor range to see if they got any unique gems there :) Any other recommendations for colors you find unique and pretty? Yes, very helpful, thanks for sharing!
@TeddyBongo-zf1ih2 ай бұрын
@@iritlandgraf I'll definitely get back to you on any other colours. For instance, I like the Charvin Neon Rose (PW6, PR122, PR46). Very pretty and I think you might like that. And yeah, the cobalt violet is lovely. The issue is that there are so many other similar products out there that are either single pigment or that cost less for the same effect that it might come down to these paints being a collector's item. They are a niche product in many ways. Having said that, it might just be a function of the particular set I bought, and they may run less multi-pigment/PW-heavy colours. Again, their oils and gouaches are superior - like you, I find them dangerous to my bank balance. Next year will be a no-buy for me (so you can imagine the frenzy going on right about now). On my wish list for the hols are Michael Harding watercolours...I'm pining...watercolours...wine. Sigh. I do enjoy your thoughtful sharing of ideas and products, and follow as best I can. Please do share your experience with any colours you end up trying.
@iritlandgraf2 ай бұрын
Thanks so much for sharing! Yes it does sound like a niche product and I'd have to look at their range to see what I like. Could be a part of their brand, these special concoctions... I haven't really seen a lot about the Micheal Harding watercolors, but I'm sure they are lovely! Thanks again for sharing your thoughts, much appreciated!

Hello Irit…. I missed the “live” feed as I was visiting friends. Had the thought to ask if I could have an hours grace to watch KZbin but thought that a tad rude! 😅. I have The Artists Palette book on my wish list!! I’ve seen it in just about every bookshop we’ve visited (UK has the best bookshops!). I couldn’t decide between the Salmon and Taffy Pink…so both? 🤗

I had to watch because of the pastels in the thumbnail. I *do* use pastels. I got one fluorescent purple Diane Townsend in a sampler of many brands, and it partially crumbled just taking it out of the packaging. I saw another KZbinr who ordered a cloud colors set and they arrived all crumbled. Pastels are crumbly, but I get the impression Diane's formula is more crumbly than most. But I agree, the colors in the fauvist set and the neon set are verrrrrry tempting!
@iritlandgraf2 ай бұрын
thanks for sharing! Yes I'm also hesitant to order any of these super soft pastels. My understanding is that the terrages are not as soft and have a more rough texture, perhaps like charcoal? Honestly I just want them for the visuals lol...
@jennw68092 ай бұрын
@@iritlandgraf Yes, they contain pumice as part of the formula, with the idea that you can use regular drawing papers and the grit will scratch the surface and help the pigments adhere. (Instead of having to use sanded papers or Pastelmat). I think the "soft" variety may omit the pumice? I've actually played with making some of my own pastels and it really is a tricky balance of having a stick that is soft and smooth yet doesn't fall apart to the touch! And hey if you order them mostly as an inspiring decoration, you don't have to feel bad about that 🙂
@iritlandgraf2 ай бұрын
Lol yes, I need to find a good spot for them ;) That makes sense with the pumice, interesting!

Thanks for sharing! I added a few things to my wishlist. ;D I was in Japan in July and the Holbein granulating watercolors were sold out most places, except for random open stock tubes. I started trying to piece the set together from various shops but was missing one color when I found an art shop in Osaka that still had the full set but was sold out of the one color that I needed. Super unlucky. 😂 I contemplated getting the whole set but decided to be practical and just wait to get that last color. Holbein also recently released a neon set and a few friends of mine were in Japan recently so I asked them to help me find it but the set was also sold out and they helped me piece it together but again I'm missing one of the colors. I'm beginning to think I'm a little cursed. Haha. Also, regarding the Fairfield Porter book, another artist on KZbin, Helen Cryer, does a quick flip through of some of the pages. It's in her latest video reviewing an art haul one year later.
