Roomba is very usefull in apartments that do not have a lot of obstacles. I have single floor apartment and I have schedule roomba to run everyday at noon and results are amazing. Since I have it, I vacuum my apartment with regular vacuum cleaner only few times a year. :)

thankfully you addressed what i believe is the true purpose of this "cleaning accessory" at the very end. I had bought the Rumba at first to do all of the cleaning for my "man cave", and as you have pointed out in your video it doesn't replace a real vacuum. What it did offer me was the frequency that i had to manually clean my floors. It kept the upkeep of my "man cave" reasonably clean (floor wise) and I only ever had to lug a vacuum up there about once a month. On a side note, it does keep my PC a lot cleaner as it sucks up the dust before it can make it into my PC. Lowering the cleaning maintenance of my PC is a god-sent and pays for itself through that alone. Great video Linus keep up the good work.

I own a programmable roomba in my 2 bedroom apartment, and it's the best thing I ever bought. I go to work, and while I'm away it vacuums my place everyday, I don't have to hear it! When I come home, it's back on its dock, charging for the next day! It goes for about 2 hours so it had plenty of time. The beauty of roomba is about the repetition, even if it does not pick up everything on first try, it will over 2 hours for sure. I also have a rug and if you make sure that the edges are flat enough, it goes over it no problem at all!

I've always been in the camp that using the Roomba not to automate tasks but to maintain a certain standard is what it's used for. We have injuries that make it difficult for us to clean very often so using a device like this to reduce the amount of manual cleaning we have to do is great. It won't eliminate the need for cleaning, but it can make it easier.

Buddy had one of these out at his cabin and it worked pretty well because his cabin was basically a big empty space with little furniture to get in the way. At his house though this thing was next to useless. Tighter spaces with lots of furniture and carpets seemed to cause it get stuck constantly or just refuse to clean certain areas. Admittedly his was a WAY older model then this one but from the looks of it not much has changed. If you have a bunch of big open spaces, especially with high furniture it can get under, then this thing is a dream. If your house is more cluttered/smaller then it's far less exciting. If you have a small space running a regular old vacuum through it once a week is just simpler anyway.

Here is my two cents for anyone thinking about buying one. I bought a Roomba and kept it for about a year and thought it was pretty great. Then I bought a Neato XV Signature and realized I was missing out. The Roomba can't actually see the room. The way it cleans is it picks a random direction to go in, hits an object, and then turns and goes in another random direction. It can follow edges of objects, but for the most part the way it moves around is random. It uses the longest distance it has gone in a straight line to determine how big the room probably is. Then it continues the process of randomly hitting things until there is a pretty good probability that it has covered most of the room given its estimated size. This results in some areas being cleaned multiple times and some none at all. The Roomba also doesn't have much in the way of suction, its more like a sweeper then a vacuum. Also, when its battery ran low it returned to the charging station and called it a day even if it wasn't done. My apartment was slightly too large for the Roomba, so it never fully finished. The Neato actually maps out the room using Lidar, then goes about cleaning intelligently one room at a time, usually using a back and forward pattern much like a person would vacuum the room or cut their grass. As a result it cleans a lot faster then the Roomba, only going over each area once. It will also stop short of objects instead of bumping into them because it can see it. I find that it gets stuck a lot less often then the Roomba does because of this. The Neato also has much more powerful vacuum motor. If its running low on battery, it will return to charge, and once it has recharged its battery it will return to the exact spot where it left off and continue cleaning. I have mine scheduled to run once a week while I am at work and I would say 95% of the time I come home to a completely vacuum cleaned apartment. The other 5% of the time I find it stuck on something. Given that the prices between them are similar, I would personally go with a Neato every time. Its a much "smarter" device.

We got a Neato Botvac, also from Costco for a significant discount, and it is awesome vs. the Roomba. It has way more logic, does the perimeter of the room then goes back and forth through the middle avoiding obstacles as it goes. Roomba just bounces around randomly until it runs out of battery.

I love my roomba's. One is for vacuuming, the other one can also wash the floor. Almost every day, when i walk the dogs, i turn on a roomba and by the time i am back, the roomba is done and has docked into the station. I don't where the difference between our roombas are Linus, but mine can run around 2 hours without a problem and does a very good job at it. Of course you sometimes do it the old fashioned way, but as you said, you have to clean up waaaay less yourself then before. So definitly worth it. Friends of mine also have 2 for each floor of their house. So you can do way less work if you equip yourself accordingly ;) You would not buy a gtx 460 to play BF4 on ultra would you? The pricetag just gives you the level of perfomance you paid for.

The newest version of the Roomba (Roomba 800 Series) uses AeroForce, which doesn't use a brush but instead uses a rubber brush and really strong suction. It's A LOT better. Much less upkeep because you don't have to clean the brushes and don't have to buy as many replacements. You have a really old unit, Linus.

I was recently in the market for a robotic vacuum. I looked at how the Rumba cleans and decided the random bouncing off objects would be a waste of time where I primarily needed cleaning help. My downstairs room is fairly open so the Rumba would at best do 50 to 60% of a job. Second the rug I have in the TV / Couch area is dark. The Dark color trips the Rumba's edge sensor making it think that is a cliff to fall off so it wont go on it. Instead I went with the Neato Botvac 80. It uses lidar to map the room and plot a cleaning path. It takes the main portion of my room and splits it in to 3 seconds, then the kitchen, dining room, breakfast nook, laundry room and side hall. It will do the edges of each zone then clean the middle before moving on. If the Botvac runs out of battery it will go charge itself and then resume cleaning when ready from where it left off for almost 100% coverage. It does a damn good job and all I need to do for prep is lay the magnetic strip down, move some chairs and shut a door. It has gotten stuck once and called for help. My picking it up resulted in the unit forgetting where home was so when it was done it drove in circles until it died. People online think it broke but most of the time they picked it up. I highly recommend this over the Rumba for much better cleaning. Longevity remains to be seen but this is a GREAT backup to my big vacuum allowing my daughter to have a clean floor to roll / crawl around on and me more time to enjoy her doing that. A quick once over here and there with the main vac and things are cleaner than ever.

The 980 is much much better, much better battery life, app for tablet/phone, better and faster coverage. Had mine for a few months now and is great. I bought one for my mom for Christmas because we loved it so much at our house.

These are actually really really nice when you have a small apartment with minimal no access areas and a small enough area that it can , with some setting up and Software modifying, can get around the apartment, do its shit in about an hour and stop again. Keeps the house nice, especially with having two cats.

Great video as always! Maybe it was because this video was pretty far out from the normal content but I did not find it as intresting, it could also be because it was no in deapth tech talk or just because it is a Roomba..

Linus could you have a look at one of the Neatos. We own one and love it. It has its bugs like all of them but is a compelling alternative to the Roomba.

I think the huge plus I would get out of something like this is that I would want to let this loose while I am outta the house. I wouldn't expect this to be the "be all end all" for cleaning a floor. More so a during the week solution to kind of keep things fairly "tidy" until the weekend when my wife and I normally do the real cleaning.

Hey Linus, Schiit just came out with a new product called the Fulla. It's an amp/dac like your mayflower and a head to head comparison would be awesome. I really love their other products but the Fulla is only 80 bucks!

Hey Linus! Since you asked us for review suggestions a couple videos ago, could you review these laptops? 1. Sagers/Clevos. Apparently they're the best option when it comes to the combination of price, performance, and build quality, at the expense of portability and battery life. But no major KZbinr reviews these, so it seems like somewhat of a gamble to try them out. 2. ThinkPad X250 with the internal 3-cell battery and removable 6-cell battery. The claim is it's a 3 lb ultrabook with a Core-i5/i7 that lasts 20 hours on a charge, and I couldn't find any KZbin reviews to back this up, probably in part due to the fact that the hype is around Lenovo's flagship, the 2015 X1 Carbon. (Oh, and apparently ThinkPads aren't preloaded with SuperFish and only their consumer-class laptops were.)
