Hey Mark 🙂 Ref. the wide front rims: that became a thing in Europe in the early ‘90s, theory being that wider tyres (385/65R22.5 super-single trailer tyres over here) run cooler and last longer. True to an extent but folks found that their truck rocked in and out of the highway truck ruts like a beagle after a scent. More stress on steering joints and kingpins too, mainly due to moving to a wheel offset that the geometry wasn’t designed for, and using trailer-pattern tyres rather than steer pattern. Now, most manufacturers offer them as a factory option with steer-pattern tyres, suitable offset and revised geometry but the fleets seem to have moved back to 295/80s or 315/80s instead. It’s down to personal choice but I reckon the Duke will look better on period skinny 24s 🙂

Personally I'd go with the simple 11R-24.5 tires on the standard rims. The reason being, with as long as it is once she's stretched, you're going to need all the turning radius you can get. With wider tires, I'd assume you'd have to adjust the steering locks to keep from rubbing the Pitman arm and other steering components, etc. If you do deviate from an 11R-24.5, I wouldn't go much past a 315 series tire. Just my .02

Started driving in the mid 80s, and a lot of the trucks I drove were from the late 60s. Some had front brakes, some didn't. The ones with, had limiting switches up on the dash, with slippery and dry settings. We were told to leave them on dry. Not to mess with them. I believe front brakes were required in the US around 1970, give or take.

Mornin Mark, The Iron duke is slowly coming together and it's looking good. I have never worked on aluminum frames so I am just taking your word for everything, but I do see what people have always told me about the corrosion and yes it looks bad, but I'm sure you will get it done. Have a great week my friend and as always say hello to Mrs. Twin stix for us.

Yes! Some Argon 'backpurged' pie cuts to complete the radiuses on your stacks would be awesome 👍 built stainless exhausts/ charge piping before using the same method and it works well. There are even sites out there that sell pre cut pie cut sections. You can easily make your own with a chop saw, but they sell them pre cut now. I'm sure for the 8" piping you'd have to make your own, but it's easy enough. Usually I chop up some sections with the chop saw, it takes a little while to clean them all up/ deburring/ chamfering the edges to get them ready to weld, especially being such large diameter piping. Usually what I do to make my own pie cuts, is set my chop saw to around 15 degrees and just cut away about a dozen pieces to start. You'll probably need three times that amount minimum for this type of project if you're going to do the complete exhaust that way, probably more than that honestly. I'd buy a couple 180, and 45 degree mandrel stainless pieces, and or course your flex joints and some v-band clamps/ rings unless he's really going to do it all in pie cuts, in which case you'd need nothing but a straight 8" section and some reducers obviously. It's definitely doable with nothing but a straight section and a whole ton of pie cuts but it'll be a shitload of welding. Not saying it can't be done, just pretty labor intensive. He'll need quite a bit of Argon, for the associated back purging, as well as some aluminum foil/ tape because I doubt that anyone has the 8" pipe plugs made up to hold the hose for the Argon/ shielding inside the pipe. He'll definitely be using a lot of shielding gas/ filler rod too. I'd have quite a few tanks ready to go, especially since it's 8" piping. I'd love to see what you end up doing here. Deboss Garages' K100 build if you've never seen it, has dual exhaust stacks/ dual intake 'stacks' as well all running up the back of the cab and it looks great IMO. I like the look of it being 'balanced' and 'even.' I'm sure it slightly helps performance too, since forced induction wants the exhaust as short/ large as possible figuratively speaking and there is no need for back pressure in a boosted application.

An old farmer once said to me "Theres only 2 tools designed to remove nuts. But there's hundreds of tools for removing stuck nuts. So if it doesn't break free, you don't have the right tool" Usually he would say this while lighting the oxy torch. But it was his second word of wisdom that stuck with me. "A bolt is cheaper than a socket. Just cut it before you break something!"

As long as you have the access you could put aluminum cross members in. Our 377 had them originally. I am sure a salvage yard would have them. You could eliminate some of the steel to aluminum corrosion.

It would have been nice if whoever cut the air ride frame module to have cut another 2-3 foot forward. That would have given you a much better place to make the splice. If you plan to pull a loaded trailer, talk to a reputable frame shop that does frame stretches about how to properly reinforce the frame. The last thing you want is to weld the frame together only to have it fail on the road. 😮

Hey Mark, I'm worried about the location where you are splicing the rear cutoff. Having a splice where your hangers are located seems pretty risky. That area is going to be exposed to high stress and I'm not sure I would want a welded seam in that location. After the hangers and crossmember supports are added back a crack could go unseen for quite some time and allow catastrophic failure in the future. Most cut offs I see people using are cut off with a couple feet of frame rail ahead of the rolling stock. Might consider shortening this up a little and move that splice back a ways or just swap the suspension to your existing frame. I have a feeling I may already be too late on this, but the choice is yours. Love the project.

Hey Mark. Really look forward to your postings every week. Watch on You Tube so haven't been keeping up on the cab over. Not keen on the extension you're going for. Argon is used to back purge the welds. I believe a chemical reaction called sugaring happens inside the pipe. It’s a black particulate that hangs onto the inside of the pipe, and think pre turbo that stuff can flake off and go through the motor, not good, hence back purging. So it’s not needed on the exhaust side but o totally agree in doing it because it would look damn good. If you wanna go crazy maybe prove our some titanium in your dimensions and when that gets warm you’ll get that nice purple blue pipe like Zondas have!!!! That would be a show stopper!!

Mark, you gotta embrace the wonderful world of oxy-acetylene. Heating up the aluminum around the bolts will break most of the corrosion it will also cause the penetrant to "wick" into the bolt holes due to the heat, and make breaking bolts free so much easier. I get it you enjoy doing it the hard way, but there's a bunch of us screaming at our monitors telling you to heat it up Laddy!

Agree with your comment about don't trust your jack but please use axle stands. Don't use wooden blocks. I work in emergency services and recently had to see someone die under a truck just like this as the weight transferred onto the blocks and they gave out when the jack failed. Died instantly and the sight was horrific. The wood splintered with the weight and literally exploded due to the transfer of weight.
