I love the "this doesn't sound like Iron Maiden" when to me it sounds 100% like an Iron Maiden song and has all the hallmarks and signs of an Iron Maiden song. Glad they finally found a Maiden song that they enjoyed.

6 out of the 7 songs they'd previously done full reactions for were from The Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind, or Powerslave - three consecutive, similar-sounding classic albums, so it's not too surprising if they had a rather narrow view on what Iron Maiden is like.

Because 80s Maiden is prime. That said, this song has a catchy hook and mean riff. But it still suffers from the insufferable repetition of 2000s Maiden. They still put out some good tracks but never will they capture the 80s tone and energy again. Up the Irons.

This song is a great example of the “modern” Iron Maiden. They sort of made the shift to more mature, less stadium rock music around the mid-2000s. This is my personal favorite Iron Maiden album. I highly recommend For the Greater Good of God or, if you want something even more modern, Hell on Earth is also incredible.

This is my favourite too, for this song, for the greater... And brighter than a thousand suns
@shiscarp Жыл бұрын
To me that shift happened when Bruce came back in 2000 for Brave New World. I know 23 years was a long time ago but it doesn't feel like a long time to me and that's what I consider modern Maiden with their longer more complex song structures. I love everything they have done since 2000. Only disappointment to me was how dead the production sounds on Dance of Death because there are some great songs on it... I try to help it by boosting the treble but it still sounds dead.

It really is not. Benjamin Breeg is an oddity even in the "modern" era.
@CoreyConQueso Жыл бұрын
@@sinbysin666 Respectfully, I disagree with that statement. If you look at a lot of songs from A Matter of Life and Death through Senjutsu, Iron Maiden shifted to writing a lot of longer format songs that I’d certainly categorize as progressive. For the Greater Good of God, The Legacy, and Brighter Than a Thousand Suns are very similar in tone and writing to Benjamin Breeg. Sure, they still have their typical Iron Maiden bangers like Speed of Light or These Colours Don’t Run but by no means is Benjamin Breeg an oddity.

Glad you guys are giving more Maiden a shot, their output after 2000 has pretty mixed opinions among fans but there are a lot of great songs. They have come to stick to this same songwriting formula more or less, long songs with a quiet intro, powerful verse and chorus with galloping interludes and guitar harmony lines before bringing it all back together with the verse and chorus, but their real strength is in the narratives they put into each song. Id also recommend Dance of Death, The Nomad, or For the Greater Good of God for songs with a similar sound. They have a talent for storytelling that is rare outside of folk songwriters, and yes they do play a lot of these songs live.

You guys are spot on with this one. Iron Maiden have been guilty of not filling space in there songs and being too busy on complicated arrangements. This song is definitely their best song of this century. The arrangement is straightforward and full sounding and Steve Harris the bassist and main song writer has actually just laid down a good solid bass line. The guitar solo is made so much better because of the simplified approach of the ryhthm behind it.

Maiden started morphing into a prog metal band in the late 90s. Bruce Dickinson rejoined in 2000 and they continued down that tract ever since. This is from their 2006 release, "A Matter of Life and Death". This is actually one of the few songs written by guitarist Dave Murray. He doesn't write a lot, but when he does, it's fiyah. Maiden has six albums in this vein: Brave New World (2000), Dance of Death (2003), A Matter of Life and Death (2006), The Final Frontier (2010), The Book of Souls (2015), Senjutsu (2021). If this is your thing, you guys should stick with this era. Plenty of material to choose from.

Here's a list of modern maiden songs you guys should check (one per album): - Man on the Edge - The Clansman - Ghost of the Navigator - Dance of Death - For the Greater Good of God - When the Wild Wind Blows - The Book of Souls - Senjutsu

Absolutely agree Ryan. The riff style and the tempo will take anyone in and get their attention. It doesn't need to be technically brilliant, it just needs to take you there. This song is fire. The riffs in this jam grab you immediately.....and they keep you right there in the pocket for years.

welcome to 2000s era Iron Maiden. "Blood Brothers" is a gem from that time as well.

The Dance of Death album and this one are both incredible!! Considering how late in their careers they came out. Iron Maiden is the best heavy metal band IMO.

The bottom line is that y'all have not listened to enough Maiden to properly contextualize this song. It's not a departure for them, it's just another badass banger! There are so many in their 17-album catalogue that it's going to take you awhile to catch up. Up the irons!

So happy you reacted to this song, I always loved it and they just played it on this album tour. They played the whole album, in fact. From that day I saw them playing this record, The Legacy (last song of the album) is probably my favorite song of them.

Seen maiden in Dublin playing this album start to finish. Unreal show.

These days Iron Maiden does sounds like this, for the most part. They have three "main" eras of sound: the Di'Anno chapter and it's prog/punk musings (giving us the albums 'Iron Maiden' and 'Killers'), the epic run where they started with 'Number of the Beast' and ended with the cherry on top: 'Seventh Son', to the "Lost Years" of 'No Prayer for the Dying' through 'Virtual XI', and finally the modern era where they bring everything from the previous eras together to create a second epic run of material, from 'Brave New World' to 'Senjustu'. The "Lost Years" had some good stuff, but too much of their output here also reflected some of the lack of focus that was going on in the band. Only about 1/2 of the songs on the last two albums with Bruce make it onto my Maiden playlist. Bruce left the band, and ironically, the next two albums (which were the least liked albums from that era) produced two of the best songs that the band had ever made up to that point: 'Sign of the Cross' and 'The Clansman'. IMO these two songs are not only excellent, but more importantly for me, work as a sonic bridge to their second epic run that started with 'Brave New World'; you can hear bits and pieces of what was and what is to come in them. At least half of the songs on the four albums in the 90s (again IMO) are uninspired at best, and in the context of a career spanning playlist, distracting.

I've been waiting for this level of joy from you guys to an Iron Maiden song! It's high time you gave Amon Amarth another visit. Guardians of Asgaard with just a good hard groove

I LOVE this album! A Matter of Life and Death is underrated in my opinion. So glad you did this song. Up the Irons!!
