True of Winter Soldier, certainly. I think they coasted for Civil War, though, as I find the writing terribly sloppy. Especially as so much hinges on the convenient positioning of two cameras in universe and the fact the world’s greatest spy never asked why an operator who was a “ghost” for seventy years would so casually unmask in front of one. Worst writing in the MCU, as far as I’m concerned.

Ahem... the boy as depicted in the movie isn't the sharpest tool in the shed... therefore it wouldn't be Peter. But yes, now he is. Okay so I'll retcon his motives as a kid standing there with an Iron Man mask.

Yeah, the boy depicted isn't so smart as to build webshooters and lead the science team, because he is a small child. The terrible Batman movies you were referring to were the 2 Joel Schumacher films (Batman Forever, Batman&Robin) which had TwoFace, The Riddler, Poison Ivy, Bane, and Mr. Freeze in them. Before those were the Tim Burton films Batman and Batman Returns which were great and features villians like the Joker and The Penguin. Burton's films were dark which was right for the Batman character but then WB was too stupidly scared and claimed it was "TOO DARK" so they went and have Schumacher make a Batman film with more "color" which ended up biting them in the ass which killed the DC Comics films for 10 years until Nolan's Batman trilogy.

The movies don't follow the comics exactly. They generally take basic storylines, then write their own story around it. This movie is a combination of like 5 separate comic stories. For example, Iron Man's first villain was Wong Chu, a North Vietnamese military commandor. Unlike the movie, where his villain was Stane, his former business partner who became Warmonger. He mostly fought communist threats, and random villain if the week type foes.

Hulk isn't a happy happy joy joy character, he's drama, his stories are tragic and sad. Hulk's famous theme song from the 70s tv show is called The Lonely Man, written to make grown men cry. I always wished he would meet The Littlest Hobo (A German shepherd) and they could end every episode with a happy song, Hobo's theme is called "Maybe Tomorrow", as in maybe tomorrow he'll find a forever home.

This is the first film in which we get introduced to the War Machine, the armor that Rhodey wears. The element that Tony synthesized was vibranium. It's extremely difficult and expensive to do so, and Howard was the only one who had the original atomic diagram for it (that he hid in the diorama for Tony to find). In the comics, Ivan Vanko was the Crimson Dynamo, a Soviet version of Iron Man with a much larger and bulkier suit (as was befitting the portrayal of Russian tech back in the day). For the MCU he was combined with another villain, Whiplash, to become that character in this film. The Ex-Wife also likely works, it just didn't have enough arming time since he fired it from such short range. If it's so destructive, you don't want to be anywhere near it when it goes off, so shooting it at a dude 30 meters away is probably a bad idea, and thus it wouldn't have armed by then.

47:21 I never even thought about this until you mentioned it but all the Iron Man movies are very West Coast centred, until they venture to New York which makes sense as the comics do heavily feature New York as the hub of alot of big Superhero's and companies. Hulk is also more of a West Coast character with Nevada and Las Vegas being two key locations in his stories but the 2008 went more East Coast with New York showing up to the end of that movie. If the movie was an origin story we would've been set in Nevada again. 49:12 I'm kind of the same but I do love me a good complex villain but more fall in the line of morally grey characters. Magneto is a great example who I adore. X-Men 97 has been doing an amazing job at showcasing villains in an amazing light more so than any live action superhero movie has done in the past decade I'd argue. I like the politics and conflicts between factions and that's why The X-Men have always been one of my favourite comic books. At the moment I feel like X-Men 97 and Invincible are the kings of the superhero genre. Cannot recommend these two shows enough.

Even though we all knew ScarJo was BlacDow(?), this is NOT how any of this happened in the comics. The MCU is it's own separate universe from the comics. Stark didn't reveal he was Iron Man, he made up the story that Iron Man was Stark's personal bodyguard. When Tony reveled that he was Iron Man at the end of the first movie, that shocked just about every comic fan.

Initially, the filmmakers had shot the scene with Tony Stark saying a more traditional line, where he was going to deny being Iron Man when asked by the press. However, during post-production, the director Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr., who played Tony Stark, came up with the idea to change the line to "I am Iron Man" as a way to subvert the typical superhero movie trope of secret identities. The decision to change the line to "I am Iron Man" was made after the principal photography had wrapped, and the scene was reshot to include this now-famous line.

Significantly more intricate plot wise, and introduces at least THREE new and unique theme elements -- I don't want to do a "spoiler reveal", so I can just drop oblique hints here, but look out for: depression/ mental illness theme; parentage / adolescent relations theme, as we introduce an adolescent character; and remote activation of Ironman weapons parts by Stark; PLUS a dramatic, tear-jerking, concluding romantic scene, featuring Stark and Pepper, worth the price of admission all by itself!! I know this wasn't meant to sound dirty, but it really, really, did.🤣 24:45 I love Clark Gregg...he is us (just a way cooler version). 27:20 Douche-Canoe Cameo number two. 🤮 37:03 🤣🤣🤣 Well played, Shannelle. 🥃 39:13 I love this movie, but Pepper walking toward a blinking red light with an increasingly shrill and rapid beeping is not good writing. 39:43 "Chances Are"....that Robert Downey Jr. and Vonda Shepard will sing about this moment...

You have to see the MCU as a long epic novel with each movie being a chapter, they don't end when the bad guy is caught, they continue building and growing, a Part 2 is just a continuation of his origins, Tony is still learning how to be a hero and once he does that he has to learn how to work with a team and be a leader, like evolution his and everyone else's origins are still going on. Think of this movie as part of the origins of The Avengers team as a whole, each solo movie is like their audition to be recruited onto the team.

I was underwhelmed by this movie, thinking the villain wasn't very interesting, and the stakes weren't that high. But you reminded me that the most interesting thing about Iron Man is his character - the flaws, the growth, and the relationship to other characters - and in that respect, this movie perfectly fits into Tony's MCU's arc.

21:42 Rhodey basically took the suit to protect Tony. He saw how destructive Tony was being and felt it was better for a friend to take it than some lackey taking it. You see how protective Rhodey is of the suit by taking the arc reactor out before Hammer got it. I would love to see this play out in court since Tony’s suits are trademarked especially with Hammer using the suit at the expo to promote his company. 35:29 and a great part as well. He put himself in the same scene as Scarlett Johansson changing clothes. 37:08 hearing that gave me a thought of an awesome scene with Deadpool. Tony is away and Deadpool finds his way into the Hall of Armor and plays dress up with all of Iron Man’s suits. Even mix and matches items on the suits.

Had to do some research... "Tony Stark's New Element (Symbol: NE), unofficially known as Badassium, was researched and theorized by Howard Stark, and later synthesized by Tony Stark. It was theorized as a replacement for the palladium core in Tony's Arc Reactor, which had been poisoning him."

The birthday DJ is DJ AM formerly of crazytown. He was a former drug addict who got clean. He was in the plane crash with Travis Barker that killed the crew and burned both of them severely. A year later, he filmed this scene. The pain killers he was put on were similar to his addiction drug, and he relapsed and ODed in 2009 before the film was rekeased. The film is dedicated to his memory.

Love your takes on movies, like you said, with a filmmaker's eye, I went to school for this and they taught us how to do this, and they too said you'll never watch movies the same (and potentially be annoying for your friends), and they were right :) But I'm glad I can do this. For what it's worth, the first Iron Man remains one of my all-time favourite Marvel movies, if not favourite movies *period*. It's serious at times, funny at others, has interesting and flawed characters, well-written, you can tell everyone enjoyed working on it. A lot of Marvel movies work with this formula and I hope you stick it out through the bad ones. But even the bad ones can still be a fun watch to get more backstory. I would sooner watch a bad Marvel movie than most of the DC movies.

They made what was called one shots that they put on the Blu-ray discs I think.. Should check out the one titled, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer. It is available on KZbin... Clark Gregg, Agent Coulson thought when he had a bit part in the first IronMan that his scenes would probably be cut, then he returns in IronMan2, he asks why is my character going to New Mexico? He was told, they didn't tell you, you are going to be in the Thor movie.

So I heard Roger Corman passed away last night. Roger Corman was a legendary filmmaker, king of the B-movies, and launched so many careers. So yeah, definitely, I gotta recommend a movie to honor his passing. There are honestly so many horror movies I could choose from, but I think it really comes down to one choice: One of his Edgar Allan Poe movies. His Edgar Allan Poe are celebrated and regarded as some of Roger Corman's best work, and for good reason. Roger Corman tried his best to adapt the Poe stories while also being original and paying tribute to Poe. They're gothic movies dripping with atmosphere. If I had to suggest any of them, I would recommend either the 1960 movie House of Usher or the 1964 movie The Masque of the Red Death, if that's OKay? Those are the two best of the Edgar Allan Poe series. It'd be another reason to react to them. I think it'd make for a fun reaction 🙂

We got chills too. That hammer was a money shot. Thor was probably the hardest of Phase One to pull off. Iron Man is a tech fantasy so actually pretty easy. Captain America just needs an actor who can handle that level of sincerity and heart. Hulk has been successfully adapted for 30+ years at this point. Spider-Man is the franchise. Making a god that actually functions IN a universe with the rest of them is really challenging.

I love that Justin Hammer is hitting on the reporter (Leslie Bibb) from the first film and she is thinly hiding her disgust with him. Lol. That is Sam Rockwell's long time girlfriend in real life. Just amuses me that interaction. Paul Bettany (the voice of JARVIS) shares a connection with another actress who will soon join the MCU.

One thing they only hinted at but some people didn't realize is rhody was "nice" and didn't really take the suit. Tony was getting his affairs in order. Gave the co to pepper & iron man to his friend. He couldn't even turn it on without Tony's authorization. So he managed to give it to him in his own dysfunctional way.

One reason mcu films are always exciting is because they always build up all the characters in the movies. And there are often multiple heroes in a movie that is titled by just one hero. So as the main character you expect iron man to survive, but who knows about black widow and rhodey and pepper (obvs they survived but who knows at the time)

“That kid was Peter Parker” is a fan theory that the MCU production team decided to not deny, and later run with in some of the publicity stuff produced, but I don’t think it’s ever been confirmed in any of the actual films.

Yeah. Gary Shandling always reminds me of Gary Shandling too! Justin Hammer is the Gilderoy Lockhart of the MCU. You know about the Stan Lee cameos and the end credit scenes. But there's a third thing to watch for: One scene in almost every MCU movie where someone falls/jumps/ejects from an aircraft. There was one in IM1, one in Hulk, one in this movie. I think the next movie, Thor, is one of the very few exceptions (unless you're willing to stretch the definition a bit). There are at least two in the one after Thor, and more falling-from-aircraft scenes in the ones that follow.

And the bit about the kid in the Iron Man mask being Peter Parker is not a spoiler. It's just a retconned bit of trivia that has no impact on the story.
