"IRON" Mike Tyson vs. James "BONECRUSHER" Smith [1987] [ Full HD]

I think in the first 2 rounds Smith felt Mike's power and knew he was going to be on the deck very soon, so he decided to make it a grab-fest, so he could survive until the last round, when he would take his shot. But it wasn't enough, and Mike took him his belt. Too bad. It was really Smith's last hurrah. Hard to believe Marvis Frazier beat him...

Tyson was a one in a century fighter! I finished training one afternoon in Las Vegas in 1991. I was an amateur. Former Referee Richard Steele was my overseer. Him being a professional referee he couldn’t be a coach/trainer. His wife Gladys was to be my promoter once I turned pro. This afternoon after finishing training I was walking to my car exhausted, thirsty and ready for a shower. Mr. Steele said, don’t leave yet.” I thought, “oh boy I’m not finished.” I couldn’t help but notice about 8 very large men standing around their cars in the parking lot but didn’t think much of it. About 25 minutes later Mr Steele said, “You can go ahead and go.” He said, “I wanted you to meet Mike Tyson but he didn’t show up.”” Then I realized and to be sure, ask Mr. Steele, “Are these his sparring partners?” Mr. Steele said, “Yes.” I would guess these guys averaged weighing 250n to 260 lbs some over 300. And I am very good at guessing weights because I had to watch mine daily. Tyson’s weigh in / fighting weight was usually 218. He was much smaller than these guys but still you could hear their concern in their dead silence. They were literally standing around with their arms crossed starring at the ground like they were about to be executed. It was obvious they were dreading what was about to take place. I will never forget the day I almost met Iron Mike Tyson!!!!..

@Mac Cleba I didn’t know that my friend. Thanks for sharing. I did have the honer of being in the gym with Riddick Bowe. I watched him spar almost every day that he did spar. His favorite T-shirt that he wore almost every day to the gym read, “”Future heavy champion of the world.”” Watching him live, I just wasn’t that impressed. But he proved himself. I should have known there was something special about him just by the fact that Mr. Eddie Futch was his trainer. I was in Bob Arum’s gym. There were world champions all around me. Floyd Mayweather was very young at this time. He was coming up in the amateur division. But two time world champion and his Uncle Roger Mayweather I actually lived with for a while. He was a great trainer. Superb at holding the mitts for a fighter. You will see that in any of Floyds workout sessions. Freddie Roach was also in Vegas at this time. He hadn’t made it big just yet as a trainer but soon would. Freddie would pick me and Ross Thompson up at daylight many mornings and take us to some mountain outside of Vegas, to run. It was 2 miles to the top but seemed like 20. Ross was The defending Amateur Champ in the lightweights in 1991 in The USA/ABF Tournament. Thats the big one. Everyone thinks The Golden Gloves Tournament is the biggest but its not. The USA/ABF is. {USA/Amateur Boxing Federation. } Later Ross turned pro and lost the lightweight or welterweight championship to Fernando Vargas. Freddie and Roger were great guys. Mr. Futch was top notch! You could not meet a better man. I could go on for hours. Sorry so long friends.I enjoy talking about it and reminiscing.

@everyday tenor I don't necessarily think he was overrated but I do think some of his shtick was the fear factor in the fighters he faced . When he finally fought a big quick fighter who could punch and wasn't scared of him thats when he got exposed I understand the whole buster Douglas situation Tyson was screwed up mentally and not in great shape physically but Douglas was in top shape and on a mission to honor his mother and Douglas had skills when he was in shape When he knocked Tyson on his ass the fear factor went out the window. Tyson fans can say there was a long count when Douglas got dropped but in reality Tyson took a terrible beating in that fight and was dominated

It's easy to blame Mike's "hitting after the bell" on "James's running," but if we examine closely, it was already in Mike's disposition to violate the rules (hit after the bell) as seen in the first round. Why? (Because of James's trash-talking after the bell? Since when was that illegal?) Look this doesn't take away from Mike's greatness, but it ain't no secret, the dude had a HARD TIME controlling himself. Mike should have invested more of himself in MMA opportunities and perhaps made a career in that or not. At least he would have gotten more opportunities to excel at kicking someone's ass, beyond boxing, and more ways to do it.

Just compare Bonecrusher to Lennox or Wlad - same physical gifts, but Bonecrusher hits like someone with palsy, while Lennox was calculated, swift, and deadly. Credit goes where credit is due, Tyson was a phenomenal fighter - but he couldn't beat Lewis, and he couldn't have beaten him the second, or third time around. slash slash : No i don’t personally believe that 31 years old is considered old by any means but in that era it was. I’m not a boxer nor did i ever boxe and i’m not particularly a fan either but i know that there are notable declines in motor skills and reflexes past a certain age. For some fighters they’re done at 28 and some are still in top form way past in their 40’s which is exceptional and not the norm. If boxers have sustained multiple concussions it’s obvious that it will shorten their careers regardless of their age. You can’t fight like joe frazier for example and expect to be highly competitive at an older age, it would make no sense.

Prime Tyson was the GOAT in my opinion. The combination of speed, power, and instinct plus training was top notch. Tyson's style was way ahead of his time as well back then and most heavyweights, although bigger than him in stature, couldn't meet Mike's style and speed and he had a way of luring his opponent inside and then WHAM you felt his power and it was pretty much over from there. For a period of about three to four years Mike Tyson was the baddest man on the planet and he was untouchable.
@bosskey72122 жыл бұрын
@everyday tenor Buster Douglas was NOT competition lol, Tyson had become his ownworst enemy at that point in his career and was not prepared at all for that fight in Tokyo and it showed. By the time he met Holyfield and Lewis he was old and washed up by then. What made Tyson so great early on is ultimately what he got away from after he started making money and fame even he has admitted to that in recent interviews. I think if you stick the young, hungry Tyson in there in any era he would have been great

@@bosskey7212 That's not Buster's fault, so stop making excuses. Shouldve, couldve, wouldve. Being a champion is having discipline both inside and outside of the ring. So if he didn't train hard Buster Douglas, then that's his own doing, and he deserved what he got. Here's the truth: he thought he was gonna walk right thru Buster Douglas, but he was wrong. Buster wasn't afraid of him, and Buster FOUGHT BACK. Buster was way past his prime when he fought Tyson, and Buster had already been KO'd three times. On top of that, Buster was older, and he had just lost his mother three weeks before the fight with Tyson. One more thing - both Holyfield and Lewis are older than Tyson, so they also were not in their primes when they fought Mike. Funny how people make excuses for Tyson when he loses, saying "he was past his prime", but they never bring up the fact that many of the fighters that Tyson beat - including Larry Holmes and Bonecrusher Smith, were WAY past their primes when they fought a young Tyson.

@everyday tenor yep... Holyfield was the dirtiest fighter ever. Made a career out of head butts. Ever wonder how a guy 4 inches shorter could bite his ear? Up until that fight I thought Mils was a standup ref. He should've called out Holyfield on the headbutts and the ear bite probably would'nt have happened.
