Ive owned these for about 12 years. these are easier to swap plates than the way you demonstrated in a vertical position. it works best to leave the dumbbell horizontal. there is a V shaped groove on the end cap. there is also a V shaped groove on the handle/square plate rest. to remove the end cap just turn a quarter turn to align both v shaped grooves. add plates. to re-attach, LOOK and align both V shaped grooves. insert and tighten a quarter turn. it makes it so much easier and faster to insert/remove the end caps when you visualize and align the V shaped groves in the horizontal position rather than blindly spinning the end cap until they align.

One thing to note about ironmasters - they hold their value very well. Had mine 10 years and sold them for pretty much what I paid for them when I upgraded to a full individual dumbbell set. They are rock solid and very robust like the manufacturer claims.
@incorectulpolitic Жыл бұрын
why did you upgrade to individual dumbbell set ?
@srhyse3 жыл бұрын
I’ve had both for years and train people. Ended up selling my Powerblocks. Powerblocks change faster in large increments, like going from 90 to 20. They are far slower to change in small increments in the sub 10lbs range though with the fiddly awkward adder weights. Nobody I trained ever liked they way they felt, either, from grandmas to powerlifters to college students and everyone else. The best Powerblock set is the 1-50lbs trainer set that changes cleanly in 5lbs increments. If you need to make adjustments less than that, Ironmasters are actually faster, which realistically for most people is going to be 80% of their adjustments in a relatively low weight range. I’d still recommend Powerblocks over them for people that are training with someone else or training multiple people, that’s all they have, and they need to make vastly different weight jumps and don’t care about the micro adjustments. Even then, however, a set of 5-50lbs dumbbells with the rack for them takes up about the same space as Powerblocks and costs far less, covid market fluctuations aside. If you need up to 90lbs, get a couple more normal dumbbells and put the light ones under it and you’re still paying less. Overall I love my Ironmasters the most, even more than gym dumbbells because I have giant monkey hands and they’re indestructible.
@iMo31363 жыл бұрын
I just got these this past week and theyre incredible. I think the concern of being able to change plates quickly is highly overrated. Instead of changing the plates while you rest the dumbbell on a side, I leave the handle parallel to the ground and change that plates that way. its much quicker and easier than most people say. Definitely worth the money

I bought these dumbbells on Basement Brandon's recommendation about two years ago. I bought the add on package that lets you get to 120lb (longer pin and 4x22.5 blocks). They're EXTREMELY durable. I drop them every set. I have no reasonable reason to complain about quality or their utility, though the slow change speed affects the way in which I structure my training. 10/10 would recommend to someone that wants to buy once and use forever.
@roj_000 Жыл бұрын
Can you explain more about how you structure your training as a result of the slow change speed? Planning on getting these, despite the slower change
@kevinmclaughlin4638 Жыл бұрын
@@roj_000 I'll give it a shot. In my case I have come to organize my workouts around static weight amounts. Rather than doing drop sets, I incorporate rest-pausing and sets to failure. I looked at weights I was using at the gym and grouped together those movements that had similar weight ranges, or where I felt I could compromise, in order to avoid changing plates mid-workout. For example: - Dumbbell Suitcase Squats (65 lbs x 2) - Dumbbell Romanian Dead Lift (65 lbs x 2) - Dumbbell Row (65 lbs each arm) - Dumbbell Shrugs (65 lbs x 2) - Dumbbell Incline Bench Press (65 lbs x 2) - Dumbbell Bench Press (65 lbs x 2) - Dumbbell Hammer Curl (65 lbs; crush grip) - Dumbbell Standing Wrist Curl (65 lbs each arm) I do not increase the weight until I can consistently perform sets of at least 12-15 repetitions without rest pauses for each movement, though I actually prefer ranges of 15-21 reps. Some exercises are forced to wait for weeks at the same weight until others catch up enough to permit the whole group to go heavier. "Waiting" doesn't meant stagnant. I continue to increase the number of repetitions for those movements (to failure) while maintaining good technical form. At age 51, it also serves to prevent my ego from forcing progression too hard or too fast (avoiding injury). I take comfort in the fact that research supports the same/similar levels of muscle growth in rep ranges from 5 to 30 reps. It also appears that research supports full body workouts as much as bro-splits. I have variations of the above, such that I can load 1 dumbbell heavy to 120 lbs and do all or most of the movements with that one dumbbell, by grabbing it with both hands at the handle, or around the sides. It works great, but it would take too long to explain some of the adaptations. The heavier dumbbell allows me to include Seated Calf Raises, while forcing me to substitute weighted/deficit pushups variations (with up to 50 lbs of sand in a backpack) for the dumbbell bench pressing. If you have a second set of adjustables (I have an old pair of from a different company), you can get a lot accomplished with a similar method. For example: Inverted Face Pulls (50 lbs sand in a backpack; I sling a long towel around a horizontal bar and pull) Overhead Press (Ironmaster 35 lbs x 2) Bicep Curl (Ironmaster 35 lbs x 2) Seated Wrist Curl (Ironmaster 35 lbs each arm) Rear Laterals (Old adjustables 15 lbs x 2) Wrist Extensions (Old adjustables 15 lbs each arm) Standing Calf Raise (body weight or holding 15 lbs; one leg at a time) I'd love to hear others' ideas. I hope it helps...

I love my IM dumbbells. They feel closets to what a commercial gym dumbbell does and as someone who does a lot of hypertrophy training & bodybuilding movements that was the most important thing to me. I’ve tried bow flex and others and hated how they just felt weird. Also the handle length issue is solved when u buy their 15lb add on kit. For 160$. It permanently screws on and gives it a tight feel when you grip them now. It also makes your 75lb dumbbells go up to 90lbs.
@Fitforacting3 жыл бұрын
@6 min it’s not too bad once you get used to it. 1. The handle and locking screws are 10lbs 2. 60lbs dumbbells is just 25lbs each side or 5 plates each side. When you lay the dumbbell down, you can see the slit they made on the inside of the handle. I can change the weight plates on each dumbbell in 20 seconds and even made videos doing it. Also helps when you have the 120lb add on kit. With the add on kit. 1. Dumbbells handle 10lbs 2. 22.5 lb on each side plus the handle makes a 55lbs lb dumbbell. I always use the big plates going over 55 and smaller for under.

If you can afford it, IM 120s and Powerblock 50s non-Exp are a great pairing. The non-expandable power blocks are in 5# increments up to 50, so you can use them for the quick change, light weight work. And then have the IMs for heavy work where you have longer rest periods. I wouldn’t want the PBs expanded up to the heavier weights as they don’t feel completely centered on the handle to me even at lower weights.

I have two sets of these dumbbells with stands as well as the 120lb add on and two of the adjustable kettlebells. I also have several other Ironmaster products like their superbench pro and several attachments. The dumbbells are fantastic in every way except for the time it takes to change plates and the fact that you can only increase each dumbbell in 5lb. Increments. Let’s face it, you aren’t going to consistently jump 5lbs in exercise like lateral raises. I have micro olympic plates that I use to make smaller leaps, but they obviously weren’t made for them and sometimes are very difficult to get to lock in, but once you get them locked they work. Ironmaster just came out with 1.25lb micro plates for them and I ordered two sets of those. They are coming in 3 days! Being able to make 2.5lb jumps in weight with plates actually manufactured for them should bridge the gap, at least for my needs. Ironmaster customer service is excellent and so are their products. I have a pretty killer home gym setup that costs way more than I’d like to admit, though not anywhere near Coop’s level, and Ironmaster is up there in value for the money.
@phineasmcsneed2169Ай бұрын
You are overcomplicating things. You can get 2.5 lb increments by putting a 5 on one side and 2.5 on the other. I do it all the time. I also made a couple of 1.25 add-ons with large washers from the hardware store, some rectangular magnets I had lying around and duct tape, for about $5.

I’ve had mine for over ten years and I love them. One thing about the stand that I appreciate is it allows you to store the plates on both sides. That way you can quickly switch out plates without standing the dumb bell on its end as was shown here. I would also add to this review that their customer service is top notch. I bought the 120lb add on kit and the plates arrived had a gloss finish vs matte. Nbd. But after 2 weeks of normal use they started to chip pretty bad. Called them and they sent me brand new ones in matte finish and sent a label for free shipping back to them. They also shipped the new ones via next day air. 1.5 years later and I still love my iron masters and they have held up very well. Expect many years to come. Edit: I guess I meet that person requirement. No superset with two dumbbell exercises. Though you loaded them on their ends, I load them horizontally. The plates stand up by themselves and makes it a little more quick. I also like the heavier dumbbell ability.

Biggest tip I have for using them - always make sure the bolt is screwed down tight before every set. If you drop them after a heavy set of bench, for example, the bolt may loosen. The advantage these have over basic dumbbells that load weights is these will stand on their side to make putting on weights easier. They unscrew and screw faster. They don't need to be centered. The ends of these are almost flat versus having a bar poke out the end and a star shaped collar on the end that makes certain movements painful or dangerous. Like setting these on your shoulders for doing dumbbell squats is possible, but wouldn't be possible with a traditional bar and collar.

I bought a set like 3 months ago. I love the smaller size and the way they feel in my hands. I dislike that they basically aren't any faster than regular loadable dumbbells. You might save a few seconds per weight change, but that's about it. It'll still take you time to change weight. I'm gonna end up getting the REP adjustables in 40lbs for warmups, lighter weight work and drop sets and things like that. They're bigger (Hence only 40lbs for me), but super quick and also durable. I like that you could purchase additional weight plates later. Another thing usually not mentioned is that changing weights for IM's is much noisier than with something like REP adjustables or Powerblocks, so if you're training in an apartment with kids or sleeping people then that's something to consider.

Hi Coop, big fan here. I was just wondering, having owned Iron Master DB myself, I never changed plates with the DB standing up. Takes longer to turn the DB around and also to see how many plates are on there. I laid them down and I could switch plates on both sides. There are even indicators where to start the quick lock 👌🏻 You are right about the math! I actually printed an overview for on my board, especially because I was looking at the 1,1kg increments hahaha. Now I own the Nuo bells, and man are they great for doing drop sets etc. As you mentioned, we will have to see about durability. Iron Master easily wins that I think. My ultimate solution would be: - 2kg to 20kg with 2kg step dumbells - Use Iron Master for above 20kg But until now, I am loving the Nuobells! Looking forward to your all time favorite DB review 👍🏻

I have the powerblock pros and ironmaster. Ironmasters are my favorite but I use the powerblocks more because of the convenience. IMs are for my heavier sets because powerblock feel like they throw you off a bit with parts shifting. You the man Coop!

Definitely among the Best adjustable Dumbbells. I've had mine for 2 years. Extremely well made. I have the 15 pound add on., so they go up to 90 pounds. Highly recommend them

I knew this was gonna happen, I just knew it!! Been using the old yellow & black SmartFit adjustable dumbells off and on for over 15 years. Nobody in the family (Me, wife & 15-year old) really likes the shape/feel (similar to PowerBlocks) and sometimes you have to pry extra weight off of what you want 'cause they stick or are wedged together. My son and I also need more weight than 40lbs now. I've wanted IronMasters, but you have to win a lottery these days. Kinda gave up on that, and went for next best - the new Pepin HD handles. Handles are on order, about another 2 weeks out, already went to Dick's Sporting Goods & bought 80lbs worth of plates for each side ($406 for handles + $455 for plates = $861 all in). Just got email that I won the IronMaster lottery & can buy the 75 lb set which is $869. I really think I'd like the IronMasters more. What do I do? Forge ahead with Pepins, or try to return / cancel & order the IronMasters? Resell the Pepins & plates? What would Coop do?

Stay with Pepins, pass me Ironmasters bro❤️ i was kinda thinking of asking metal company to make stainless steel round weights for Ironmasters so I can go up to 100kg/220lbs per each.

Have a set of these and so far really like them. Can agree to Coop's points that the switching of weights is not blazing fast but can be done quickly as you get use to it. Personally, went this route over the powerblocks because of the unobstructed design around the handle. The side bars on the powerblocks turned me off from them.

I have these DB and they are great! They feel more like a traditional DB. Not a fan of the Power Block as your wrist is pressed against the block and it does not feel like a traditional DB. You do learn how to change the plates quickly with the Ironmaster and I created a table on how many plates are needed for each weight and I keep it on the wall with by the system.

@4:02 I have used the Powerblocks and know what you mean. The right imbalance you can’t notice as much when the weight is light. 🤩
@mattplummer55743 жыл бұрын
You get use to the weight changes and with time like coop said about a barbell you will be able to tell what’s on it and adjust them without blinking an eye. Biggest reason I like them for a garage gym is you can have a set 10-165 for less than $1500 and not take up the entire garage.

I bought the Baadass dumbbells from Canada, ironmaster was out of stock for a long time. The main reason I would recommend ironmaster or baadass is the end caps are flat and can rest on your thighs if you are setting up for any bench press movements. Plus once you're done you can set them down non-gently. Can't do that with the other ones and can't rest them on your thighs.

I bought two pair of the Iron Master dumbbell handles, and then bought 1" weights from my local Play It Again Sports. The 12.5# plates are necessary to keep the corners of the square end of the handles from hitting the floor. I can fit 4 12.5# plates on each side for a total of 110# with the screws that come with the handles. I have two of the longer screws, and there I can fit 160# on a handle.

I've had these not for close to 2 years. Best adjustable dumbells IMO. Insanenly durable, I have the 120LB add on kit and heavy handle kit. I've dropped these multiple times with no issues. People complain abut drop sets, etc. If you're doing a drop set on something like bench and this, it doesnt take that much longer to load the dumbell.

I went super budget. Got a ton of cheap standard weights, and some adjustable dumbbell handles. The cheaper adjustable handles are definitely longer, but I have gone up to around 90 pounds, without too much difficulty. I just check them to make sure the screw is tight before every set.
@richardmather19062 жыл бұрын
This is what I did as well. And I have a couple of "standard" barbells I can use the plates with to supplement the Oly bar. I also have a adjustable kettlebell I can use the same plates on. Much more versatile.
@vodoo55533 жыл бұрын
They aren't the quickest to change but unless doing super sets its not a problem. The handles are long and cause a balance issue however you can shorten the handles with the heavy handle add on. I have some rubber hex that I use with the ironmaster for super sets etc
@markhalstead23863 жыл бұрын
I solved the super set issue by buying a second set of handles and more plates. Now I can do two back to back sets and never change a weight. If I do four back to back sets, I may need to still change weights depending on the moves. I have owned mine for more than 2 years and the stand is as solid as it was day one.
@DakTirCue3 жыл бұрын
Are you adding the plates with the dumbbell standing on its end for visual aid only? .. because its MUCH faster when you have them flat on the stand and can load both sides without having to flip the dumbbell over. Also , they sell a kettle bell with the quick lock that uses the same weight plates .. its a really good, durable system. I've had mine for 7 years with minimal chipping of the coating and minimal corrosion. love them. but yea.. load them on the side , not standing.

I use dumbbells for mostly arms and shoulder and chest flyes and change the weights frequently. I’ve had power blocks for 8 years and bought them for durability Yet speed.
@rauldelgadillo84473 жыл бұрын
Best dumbbells. I've owned powerblock and bowflex. Really...changing plates is simple. Super sets are still good. Powerblock just feels like a toy and you need to go to the change station to change plates. Bowflex is super super long and awkward.
@theultimatederp32883 жыл бұрын
They can actually go up to roughly 180 pounds per dumbbell if you buy all the add on kits + the Heavy Handle Kit. Add a 66lbs weight west to that and you got a pretty nice barbell/Hex-Bar substitute. Which is great if you live in an apartment and can't have a barbell-dumbbell combo due to space and weight constraints.
@DanFromGym3 жыл бұрын
While it's not as quick as the others, it looks good enough. Personally I want hex DBs for 5-50lbs for quick supersets on isolation workouts, then I would use the adjustable DBs for 55-100lbs to save on space and money.

No honestly I would not change a thing. I leave the adjustable at 100 lbs each and go up from there. I use the hex dumbbells for warm-up and arm workouts. The hex dumbbells just get too expensive at the bigger weights.

I have had these for a number of years. Best way to go in my opinion is get a second set of handles. I like the fact that the handle does not stick out at the ends. Ironmaster had an issue with the paint, on the plates, flaking off a few years ago. Might be worth keeping in mind if you are buying used.

Just picked up a pair of these on OfferUp and, despite the typical COVID gouging, only got a little beat up in price. A consolation is that the deal included the 120 lb. add on kit, the kettlebell handle, AND the heavy handle plate kit which, NOT MENTIONED IN THE VIDEO, brings the handles to an acceptable length (for both Coop and his wife) and adds 15 lbs. to each dumbbell. I’ve opted for the Ironmasters for the real dumbbell feel AND the expandable weights. The weight increments also surpass that of the NuoBell in my opinion. I’d also like to let everyone know that Ironmaster’s lottery should begin today. With my recent purchase, my only reason to enter would be to sell them for a lower price than the aforementioned gouging sellers. Regrettably, I may be spiteful enough to do such a thing!

One of the nice things about the Iron Masters is that you can use plates with the 1" holes. Just buy the handles. The problem is finding those 7-1/2# or 10# plates to create the load you need now that supply is scarce. For heavier loads, you would need the extended handle. Also, the last time I checked, in order to even get the Iron Master DBs, you have enter a lottery. They give a limited supply every month.

After owning these for a mere 3 weeks there is a certain degree of muscle memory with these. If they are your only dumbbells and you’re using them 6 days a week I have gotten way faster at adjusting these. Basically like coop said if you’re not super setting an exercise that requires BOTH dumbbells at the same time with different weights they are the best option available in my opinion.
@zacherymassey63523 жыл бұрын
Coop.. I will add in.. If you have the add ons to them you can adjust much quicker. Like I can get to a 55 lb dumbbell if I use the 22.5 lb plates from the 120 lb add on weights. The bigger plates make it easy.
@jefflawrence53423 жыл бұрын
I have Ironmaster and really like. I looked at the Powerblock system but the ridiculous cage around the bell seemed like a great way to rip your shoulder out if you had to engage in an emergency release of the dumbbell and got your hand caught in a bind trying to dump them.

I've made a weight chart for the iron masters so you don't have to do any maths and put it up besides the dumbbells.They also offer an add-on that effectively make the handle shorter, but I find it to be expensive for what you get. What I would like is more aggressive knurling on the handle.

I have these with the add on to 120lbs. I have tried most of the stuff out there and the IronMaster feels like the most traditional dumbell you'd have at a commercial gym. To attest to something you mentioned. You do get much faster a switching the weight. I lay mine horizontal on the ground and do both sides at the same time rather than vertical like done in this video. Also the math gets real easy as you said. Super sturdy feel. I feel the power blocks make some movements a little odd. I would like to eventual try that 3rd option you showed here (nuobell). I keep seeing many brands of the same idea, and I do like the concept.

I picked these up used...not sure what the deal is because they are supposed to be so good but the locking bolt or weights were trash when it comes to tolerance. When I got to 60 pounds the locks would slide in and twist but pop loose before they would lock up while tightening. Again it is threading and tolerances and weight plates...I have switched around weight plates to help it but it is an endless combination of jacking them around

these are the best adjustable dumbbells; have a set including the 120 lbs upgrades - all metal construction; no plastic parts - very durable ... when you remove the locking pin, iron master recommends aligning the triangle notches.

these are better than all those other gadgets for me. all i need is the "realistic DB" experience. i don't worry about "how fast " i can change them. the form factor allows normal range of motion. i am completely happy with the purchase last year. just trying to get the add on kits. they have a "drawing" system and i never get picked yet ppl try to sell them after every release.smh

In your best of video you should include the Amazon Basics adjustable dumbbells. They are the old school style that use standard plates. I like mine. Since I decided to go standard for everything; I can use my dumbbell plates on my adjustable kettlebell, barbell, EZ-Curl, tricep bar, trap bar, and cable setup. It's great versatility for someone who doesn't have a ton of money to spend on gym equipment.

You are missing some of the Upgrade Options in your Review...You say the Handles are kinda long...you get the Heavy Handle Kit and Voalla they are Not Already, The Reason they made it this way is so that they can add a bit more weight without extending it more...by the way My only Real Downside I would say here is that the 165 lbs dumbell (180 lbs with the Heavy Handle Kit) is kinda 60 cm long....which I guess would be uncomfortable when you do 330 lbs dumbell bench press

Good review. Can't even get them now due to so called shortages. Their 45lbs set cost over $500, way more expensive over the '20 Powerblocks or the Bowflex. Companies like these have been milking customers for the so called convenience and has nothing to do with the amount of iron they use. They still use around 50lbs worth of iron per handle and the costs are astronomical. $300 per set, I could see, but not over $500. American companies make iron dumbbell companies make plenty traditional weights here from recycled iron here in the USA and the prices are still reasonable. But some companies have raised their prices through the roof because they supposedly import everything. Customer gets the short end of the stick and gets punished for China, I don't want to support companies like these anyway. A made in the US iron pairs of 20lb, 30lb, & 40lb set can be had for under $400, shipping included.
