Iron: "The jumping is so buggy" Me: Ah yes! Finally a REAL souls-like experience!
@ootdega3 жыл бұрын
Hellpoint has actually gotten a lot better. It's less stiff, the platforming is actually doable (it doesn't look like it, but you CAN make that jump), and the atmosphere is pretty interesting. My brother liked it a lot. Just don't play it on local co-op. The game really can't handle it. Borderline unplayable.

Me, playing Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition when it was new, first time ever playing anything with a controller as someone who keyboard and moused everything before, or used a joystick (primarily for flying and driving, but also for platforming back in the Amiga days): - died because I sucked at using the Dualshock, falling off a cliff - died because I botched a jump - died because GfWL just sucks and did weird things like hijacking my control authority while I just was moving around and suddenly couldn't stop anymore, walking myself off into the eternal depths - died because I botched a jump again - died because I still haven't quite figured how to Dualshock, again, falling a long way while trying to circle a zombie... - died because I botched yet another jump - died in the Capra Demon boss fight because somehow the camera was stuck in a fricken corner, or maybe it just was me again still not understanding the concept of a controller, but that was just a vague assumption. Anywho, my cam was stuck and I couldn't free it, but I finally died the first time in that game to an actual enemy!

'Twas a strange, janky, yet peculiarly endearing game once you got into it, as I recall. A certain amount of control scheme frustration, to be sure, but once you figure out where the mouse input translation falls on a scale of "relative" to "absolute" (I think it was kind of a bit of each, which added to the jank feel)... you could semi-reliably hit enemies, even specific parts of them! Which was way cool for a game out of that time period. =)

The exploration is what does it for me. Everytime you reach a new area or level which usually has such a specific and unique look to it always makes me stop and just absorb the new environment for a moment. Going through an area for the first time is the best feeling in the game for me: fighting off new enemy types, finding all the (hidden) items, opening up shortcuts, adding more pieces of lore to the gigantic lore puzzle that DS is, it's all fantastic. In contrast to many others, I usually enjoy the areas a lot more than the bosses cause I really play these types of games purely for the exploration and not for the combat. Also the reason why I really hate having to do NG+ runs for trophies because it takes away this element of surprise and exploration.

From Below's Steam reviews: "Shadow of the Molasses is a game where you spend the first 20 minutes staring at a boat. Clouds pass overhead, a light rain begins to fall, and somewhere off in the distance you can hear the developer pleasuring himself while muttering "Yeaaaaah. Are you enjoying my ART? Then you arrive at a beach. You climb up a wall, then walk down some stairs, stab some red floating diamonds, climb up another wall, then - and this is the tricky part - you walk down some stairs. During this journey you will eat several food items off the floor and drink from many a puddle. But then, you put a thing in a thing and take an elevator up higher. This is subversive, you see, as the game is called BELOW and not ABOVE. You'll quickly realize that navigating the environments is a lot more tedious than navigating to the Steam refund page. When you get there, you're gonna want to select "It's not fun" as the reason and type "Firmly entrenched up it's own ♥♥♥" in the notes section."

I'm here in late 2021 and as others have said, Hellpoint ended up being far, far better than what it was here. They have some interesting mechanics that set it apart from other souls likes, platforming is fixed and functional, world/lore is great. it's still a bit strange or rough in spots as it isn't a AAA or anything but nothing like the jank we saw here. Has Very Positive recent reviews and Mostly Positive overall on steam right now so it would seem many people agree.

@@n124ajdx But Aqua is useless, she's only remotely decent at dealing with undead, and even then, she's a beacon to undead, meaning you'll just attract more undead. Then there's what she does to anything that's not pure water, stay away from soda Aqua. Though her useless nature aside, you know that Fate series has a reference to her, in FGO, Babylonia arc, Ishtar, who at one point is forced to sit down with a stone tablet that says "Worst Goddess". If it wasn't for the large amount sad moments that followed in the arc, I'd have said that was the funniest arc. But yeah, just leave Aqua with her party tricks, can't even win a game of rock paper scissors (though suppose it doesn't help her that Kazuma's luck stat is op, and she stands no chance, even with all the blessings she casts, haha.

Glorious, a Megumin reference, and now rewatching that bit I won't be able to think of anything else.

Yes! Die by the sword! Classic! I remember when it came out... insane difficult and hilarious. The hero gets his leg cut off in an arena; “bloody hell!” Like it’s a slight annoyance, then hops everywhere 😂😂😂

6:56 okay but can we just appreciate the sheer confidence of our protagonist as he inquires “Is that all you got!?” Whilst he is getting his arse thoroughly handed to him?

Pretty sure that's a updated or modded version of die by the sword. You controlled your arm with the numbpad in the original and limbs flew off. Also the textures are smoothed out especially the blood which was pixelated in the original.

Rune II may seem satirical at first but you've got to remember that it was made by Human Heads who literally have not made a single good game since the first Rune and have a spectacular talent for taking neat concepts and just flat out ruining them.

Prey was great

Never played Prey ?, the good one
@Phucketmcsucket2 жыл бұрын
@@chillhour6155 Prey was actually pretty mediocre. It was great for maybe the first 15 minutes when they put some the mechanics like portals and gravity manipulation to good use but it's clear they exhausted all their ideas after that and they basically just resorted to using them for padding (for example walking on a gravity path on a wall to reach a switch to disable a forcefield and then backtracking on that gravity path. Wow, great puzzle. Great setpiece. 10/10. Oh and then there was the portal maze towards the end which was just god awful and annoying) they never do anything creative with them again after the first couple of levels. On top of that the game was boring since there were absolutely no consequences for dying (enemies stayed dead and aside from having to do a bit of walking you didn't lose any progress at all) and most of the enemy designs were blatantly stolen from other games. Also the weapons, despite their exotic appearances, were incredibly generic. The alien rifle was basically just your average scoped assault rifle, the not-a-cyberdemon arm was just a stronger assault rifle with a grenade launcher instead of a scope, and the acid gun was literally just your average shotgun (shit, they couldn't even be bothered to give it some cool acid effect like making enemies desolve. You just shoot enemies and they fall over just as they would if you shot them with a standard shotgun). You could easily swap their models with a scoped M16, an AK-47 with a GL, and a pump action shotgun of your choice and nothing would be out of place. The closest thing it had to a creative weapon was the leech gun and that was just limited to how you got ammo for it. When it came to actually using it, ice ammo was basically just a generic short range flamethrower (granted it froze enemies instead of setting them on fire), plasma was just... a typical plasma gun akin to Doom, lightning was just a Q2/Q3 style rail gun, and the sunbeam was just a laser. Also the spirit walk thing was pretty much pointless and might as well not have even existed since they never did anything interesting with it mechanically. The most you ever needed it for was to spirit walk through a forcefield to flip a switch to disable it. They were so lazy and uncreative there were times when the switch was almost directly on the other side of the forcefield. Honestly, I'm pretty sure anyone who insists the original Prey was good is just thinking about the first couple of levels. If they actually went back and played the full game, they'd see that it's not as great as they think it is.
