I rarely play anyone who shows much of their serve in warmups... then comes the bomb or huge kick... :-) split step is key. When the adrenaline is going have a tendency to "jump" into the ball too which isn't effective. The ball is coming, let it come works best. There is a lot more to it as you mentioned with the take back etc... We play mostly doubles in Atlanta, so the net person is always in the mind of the returner too which adds pressure.

Doubles is a whole different beast but alot of this should still be considered. I like the "let the ball come" approach to keep yourself calm

Great tips! I wish you went over the movement for body serves and the movement required to get out of the way.

great content - looking forward to that competition training content. Coming back to tennis after some surgeries and I need to get the engine going again.

Cool video. One thing I'd like to see another return video on is the details of the shorter swing. One coach told me to treat the return of serve kind of like a volley and that really helped me for some reason. I tend to have a big takeback and it's just not good lol. BTW love your intro graphic and the inclusion of that point at the end!

Yea the pace of the incoming, mid to high level, serve makes it hard to take a big swing. It's a half to quarter stroke depending on the pace of the incoming serve. I still find many rec players at my level at least don't have a great 2nd which opens opportunity for the full swing and a big step in.

Coach Will, what’s your suggestion to gain movement speed & acceleration while bulking up? My job needs that I keep my shape by lifting weight but seems like my tennis performance going downhill once I bulk up

thanks, appreciate the problem I have is adjusting (either swing path or racquet head angle) at the contact point when I realize the serve kicks to left (for uncomfortable high 2BH return) or right (body serve return). My question would be: What is the mindset or what is going through your head in order to adjust swing path and attack angle so I can control HEAVY KICK serve easier and black serve back?

What grip do you set up in for the return?
