Technically, the hot dog can be classified as such since the sausage is 'sandwiched' between two halves of the same bun. It doesn't even have to be bread; I could put in a slice of salami between two slices of pizza and call it a sandwich.

I remember my friends having a really heated debate about this topic. It almost ruined our friendship.
@calebcostrini3 жыл бұрын
Ok hear me out. I was going to argue that hot dogs are actually tacos, but I then came to a stunning conclusion. A sandwich is essentially a layer of filling of whatever sort stuffed between two layers of baked dough. A pie is a layer of baked dough with a layer of filling on top, often with another layer of baked dough on top of all that. Therefore, this whole argument is irrelevant because *_sandwiches are a form of pie._*
@markoboizys29402 жыл бұрын
OBJECTION! No, it is not. Since a pie needs to be baked altogether, including the dough, whatever ingredients you might add, mayonnaise if you feel like it, whilst a sandwhich is not baked. Sure, the dough is, but that's one of the ingredients creation. Practically, you could bake a sandwhich, but it's going to taste horridly, for example, the lettuce and the tomatoes would dry off. Therefore, it can't resist the heat a pie can (and the heat necessary for the creation of a pie), therefore your argument is inexplicably wrong
@calebcostrini2 жыл бұрын
HOLD IT! "Baking" a sandwich is not uncommon at all. Every time you go to Subway they ask if you want your sandwich put in an oven. The result is great crispy bread and melted cheese, not ruined taste. And not every type of pie is made by baking the entire thing. Like every kind of food, there are many acceptable ways to prepare pie and all of its forms, sandwiches included.
@markoboizys29402 жыл бұрын
@@calebcostrini FINE!! Even with the fact of a sandwich being baked is acceptable, there is an incorrect way to prepare foods, and then there is the correct one. I like my pies crusty and well done, since that's the correct way of making them. The creator of a pie has envisioned it to be made this way, so who are we, mere mortals, to argue with him? Subsequently, pastry, for example, is short, made with fat and flakey or crumbly, with no gluten structure or rising agent. Bread, both yeast breads and quick breads, have rising agents and use gluten, as well as things like eggs to give them structure. A pie is not a sandwich. A sandwich is not a pie.
@calebcostrini2 жыл бұрын
If I put peanut butter or any other common sandwich filling in between two slabs of pastry, would that not be a sandwich? An unorthodox sandwich, but in the entire culinary world there are so many ways of making any type of food that almost any "correct" way is entirely subjective. And that's all sandwiches are. An unorthodox and atypical form of pie.

I'm here to put an end to this debate once and for all. A hot dog is actually *not* a sandwich because you can eat a hot dog without a bun. The term "hot dog" refers to the meat. A *hot dog in a bun* may count as a sandwich, but the hot dog itself does not. You would not eat ham and call it a sandwich.
@EffeThree3 жыл бұрын

OBJECTION! While you are correct that it says the term “usually” and it could be understood the way you are saying, the way the “usually” could also be understood as is that the frankfurter could also be served on another kind of bread other than a “long split bun”, but that the bread has to always be a part of the equation! Ok, hear me out: Axiom 1: A sandwich is the result of filling food between two pieces of bread, or spread over a piece of bread Axiom 2: Supermarkets and bakeries sell bread. People buy or steal that bread and they can also make homemade bread. Thus, bread also ends up in homes and other locations. Axiom 3: Everything is edible if youre brave enough Consider any two slices of bread: they could be from different stores, different houses, or even different countries. They, and everything in between them constitute a sandwich. The contents of the sandwich are everything between the two slices. However, there may be other slices of bread between the two original slices f bread, thus creating a graph-like structure composed of mini sandwiches. Moreover, every single slice of bread is always a sandwich: there is always something on it (air, plastic wrapper, other bread) and per axiom 3, everything is edible if you're brave enough. Conclusion: the entire planet is a network of sandwiches.

I propose to amend Axiom 1. A sandwich is certainly the result of filling food between two slices of bread, but it must be acknowledged that said filling must be in direct physical contact with the slices of bread. Due to the common interpretation that air and other gases are grouped together with the vacuum as so-called "empty space", the bread is not in a philosophical sense "touching" the air, and as such it cannot be said that anything between two arbitrary slices of bread constitute a sandwich.
