Is a Tractor Cab Worth the Money? | Pros and Cons of Tractors Cabs

Is a tractor cab worth the money? This question is one considered by many including myself when out shopping for a compact tractor. When I originally set out to buy a tractor, a cab was not my first choice. With the added cost of a cab mixed in with my past experiences only involving open station tractors I felt like I knew what I wanted. After much discussion with others and stumbling across the perfect size tractor with the cab included. I decided to take the plunge and dive into the word of comfort. Now I"m a firm believer that I made the right decision and won't ever go back to open station. Today I hope to share with you why I believe the cab tractor is the way to go for those of you in my situation. If you've ever needed some help identifying real-world reasons why an open station may not be for you, today is the day. Glad everyone out there is here and hope you enjoy the video. Couldn't agree more, everything you mentioned is spot on. I just upgraded to a JD 3039R with deluxe cab this past summer, simply put, everything is more enjoyable in a cab tractor. Everyone always mentions heat in the winter, I agree, but not being out in the dust and pollen during the summer months is huge. I have allergies as well, brush hogging was starting to wear on me with the open station. But the noise reduction is a big one as well, and just like you, sometimes I don't even have the radio playing. Not having to wait on better weather, the list goes on and on, all the way around it's definitely cab tractor for the win.

Bought my second tractor this spring. Bought the cab specifically for heat in the winter, but the AC and dust protection were an added bonus. Still use my open station tractor, but love the cab.

Excellent vid. I was debating the same question when I bought my new tractor. After 3 years, I have no regrets for buying the cab. Dust/pollen control while brush hogging and doing dirt work. Environmental control during inclimate weather. And a comfortable cacoon when I run into the occasional bald hornet nest. All priceless!!!!

You really opened my eyes as I never give thought to many of the things mentioned. Also, the tractor and you work together as a team making it fun to show up and load a load of lumber or trees... what ever job it is, you are comfortable and not a jockey going for as many whatever to do at a pace that does get people hurt. I watch so many now Sandy as this is all I have to stay in touch with the real world. thanks for sharing thoughts as its a good one for many reasons

You made valid points for the cab.I have a small farm in lower newyork state .When i got my first new tractor i did not get a cab it was a big mistake .I have frozen in the winter clearing my 1/4 mile long driveway and in summer i was stung multiple times in the head and face while brush hogging and had a reaction from that .My new tractor witch took 7mo to get has a cab, best thing i ever got but the 3rd function is a close 2nd.Thanx for the videos!

Hey Sandy, I totally agree with you on the Cab subject. I only bought myself a new tractor a little over 12 months ago, but didn't have the funds for a Cab. I'm now starting to look at my options for either getting a Cab or as a minimum a windscreen. The weather in Northern NSW Aus is a lot less extreme than yours, in that winter gets down to an average of about 7c at night & an average of 30c during the day in summer... But all of the dust & bug issues you raised is definitely an problem, which at the moment my only solution is bug repellant and a hot shower at the end of a dusty day..... Great video, I bought my first tractor ever at the age of 53 last year. I bought a cab because of allergies that at times can be severe. This has allowed me to help with haying. The only disadvantage, and its minor, is that woods work doesn't happen with my tractor.....yet. Its an old farm and the woods roads have not been maintained and cleared of overgrowth. We will be slowly improving this and the tractor will see the woods eventually. Now if I can just keep my Father-in-law from driving around with the back window open, dust control will be better :)

Yup Sandy I saved up a bit longer so I could get my JD 3039r with a cab. It made the price point a lot more but I’m at a stage in my life that I want what I want and I don’t want snow blowing in my face, plus it keeps me cool when I’m using it for longer periods in the heat. Cool video. Chad.

Jake here coming late to the party, in more ways than one. Bought a 2023 Kioti SE Cab some months back. Love ❤️ it truly as here in north central Fla. we have a lot of hot 🥵 weather and that A/C blows nice and cold. Still have & use the 3930 Ford New Holland I bought new back in 1998 & IIRC, that was the last year New Holland offered a geared tractor. That said I’m enjoying the 3 speed hydrostatic in the cabed Kioti. Apologies in advance for going on..yeah!, lovin the cab tractor with Bluetooth, A/C. It’s awesome being able to enjoy a cold one inside the cab and still get work done comfortably

I get -20C in the winter with wind chill down to -40C and 40+C in the summer. When I bought my 55 acre property and started looking at tractors to manage the property I asked all my tractor owning neighbors what implements were most important and EVERY one of them told me they regret not spending the extra money for a cab. I'm now the only person in our region with a cab on my Kioti NX5010HSE and after my first winter it's amazing!

I’ve owned a few tractors over the years. The last one I bought has a cab. I agree with everything you said. Clearing snow in 8 degrees with the wind blowing. No problem. Our tractors have all the same features. Only difference is mine is a TYM. Awesome video Sandy.

All good points, I also value my cab on the skid steer, ac/heat, could never do what I do without it, it has some drawbacks but the pros outweigh the cons.

Thanks for the video, one thing about tinting your windows is it makes them almost bulletproof. Not sure if the windows on these cabs are made or safety glass; but if you've ever watched some of the police videos where they have to break a driver's side window that's been tinted you'll understand just how difficult it is to completely break. I don't think that I would use a really dark tint, just using something lightly tinted will get the same added strength as dark tint. Putting tinted film on glass is easier than most people think and you can buy it at the big box stores.

Hi Sandy, my first tractor was open station. Loved everything about it. Then i put the blower on in October. By December I bought another tractor with a cab and a front mount blower. My answer is both, haha. I realize 2 tractors is a privilege. But i don't know anyone who doesn't want 2. I do tend to put more time on the cab tractor, and it's also the lower horse power. Also I don't use the quick hitch. Never really struggled with making the connection. Keep on tractoring.

Living in northern ontario( cold in winter , hot in summer, mosquitoes, and black flies) I didn’t even look at tractors without a cab when I bought my tractor. Kioti CK 26/20 se( cab) so worth it.

Well said, I agree with all your points. Also if a branch or something was to break the glass that is better than the branch hitting you in the face and injuring you. Another point is that in the case of an accident or tip over, the cab will keep you contained inside so you don't end up pinned under the machine

Live in the UP of Michigan, I have a cab with heater on my Kubota. I didn’t even consider an open station tractor when deciding what to purchase. I can clear/blow my driveway in a t-shirt in the middle of the winter.

Hi Sandy!!😀😀 I have a Mahindra 2555 55HP with a cab and wouldn't trade it for a open station tractor for anything. I agree 100 percent with everything you said. Also the cab keeps small branches from poking you in the eye or slapping your ears. The glass is tougher than it looks. I have been a little careful and have never broken any glass yet. You have it very right, it worth it a LOT. Both my tractor and my excavator are with ...... no cab .... and I had to build a cab (winter) for my tractor, otherwise (because we share the exact same weather) winter use is killing me (great to have heating) as it is in spring-summer time with flies but no a/c. I don't have a cab but can very much appreciate what one offers. I would like to have a cab that I could pop on and off. I work a lot in dense bush and a cab would get destroyed and it would drive me crazy getting on and off the tractor. I am sure that I would love a cab on for all other tasks.

I have grown up on farms and worked on them off and on for most of my life,and have run both open station and cab tractors.Im here to tell you,can is the way to go,if you have the funds to pay for it.Not just the initial cost of buying it,but also maintaining it.Nothing sucks worse than having to run a cab tractor in the summer and the ac doesn't work.They can cost you a lot of something goes wrong,but as a whole,I'll take a cab every time over an open station.

For many tractors the ergonomics and features vary with the cab. The Dk loader lever is very different. That is the main reason for me to consider the cab. The other big advantage of a cab is you can keep manuals, instructions, in the cab and read them in comfort. Great for new pieces of equipment or rarely used items or mixing rate information. You will lose a horsepower or two with the ac on so make sure you account for that. I just ordered an open station. I would fill the cab with tools, straps, ropes and keep it too cluttered.

I have the same tractor as you have minus the cab. When i bought it new I would have liked to have the cab but by budget moved me to buy the backhoe attachment instead. Never looked back from that decision. Backhoe is much more useful than a cab. I'm on Vancouver island all I have to deal with is mostly rain.

If you never spoil yourself with all the new gizmos and doodads like cabs, ac, power windows, auto transmissions, cruise control, radios, ect then you never know what your missing and life is good. i live way up north in Ontario....and you are so right about the wasp and the black flys and mosquitos...they will eat you alive ...working with a mesh mask over your head while working is no fun..and i blow snow with snowblower and without a cab the wind would just blow it back on you and it gets cold and wet....cab is the way to go...yes sir

Different strokes for different folks. I'm in my sixties and have my share of age related health issues. I'm not in Canada, but am less than a hundred miles south of the border in the Adirondacks. My thought process was I can buy a bigger, more powerful machine or more implements with the money I'd have to spend on a cab. Consequently I got an 80 pto hp. tractor and a hydraulic post pounder for what I would have spent for a 60 hp cab tractor. Snow removal is a chore, and raking hay is hot, but my shoulders are loving not needing to swing a maul to set posts. Just a different outlook.

Something that hadn't even occurred to me when I decided a cab would keep me alive in winter, as many have said, the A/C is just a nice bonus. Growing up on a ranch in South Dakota we could not afford a cab tractor. Now 60 yrs later I would not go without the cab. In the winter here in Alaska the heat is very much appreciated. Looks like your tractor is pretty much setup like mine although cannot get any radio station on where I am at.

Then bevel and weld quickcouplers instead. You can get both cat1 and cat2. With a good welding it will hold, no worries 🤗😋...

just in case the viewers not aware, it is not a good practice to drag the bucket backwards. when the hydraulic cylinders are extended, they are at their weakest state. One rock in the ground can cause the cylinders to buckle. if you have to drag the bucket backwards, try not to extend the cylinders too much.

Anyone seen a 30 year old cab tractor with all the glass, wipers working, and AC still going? A few of the big field tractors maybe, but the utility size ones tend to get smashed eventually, and the AC quits. If you have alot of snow to blow I guess a cab would be nice, but I don't. I don't cut grass or move dirt in the wet either, as those activities don't work so well in the rain. If you have an actual fixed budget for a tractor I'd still get a bigger open station tractor, over a smaller cabbed one, more tool for the money! I've already got good ice fishing clothes so sitting on the tractor in the weather for 45min plowing the driveway isn't really a hardship, and it rarely snows below -10 here either. If Sandy was skidding big trees then I think he'd rather have a bigger tractor, than making double the trips in a little tractor with a cab... Also it depends how many hours you are going to do, I'm averaging around 80 per year, so getting my stuff done in reasonable weather is easy. If you are making your living with a tractor and using it 20hrs a week then get a cab and a big capable tractor for sure. You'll also see most small farm utility loader tractors don't have cabs either just to KISS, so you don't to clean the glass all the time, or keep wipers on it, and you can see what you're doing better for hooking up stuff, loader work, etc...

Sandy man. I’m not in any way meaning to be a critic or disrespectful but you don’t need to run engines wide open unless you require extra hydraulic pressure/lifting force. Same as our chainsaws, keep RPM’s down unless we really need that extra power. Save on fuel and wear and tear.

I've always had open station tractors although clearing snow while snowing and very cold is not the best it never really bothers me as long as I'm suited up. Cabs just aren't worth it to me I do to much work in the woods and would end up breaking glass. I hate black flies and deer flies they're are Satan's spawn. But I can't deal with broken glass.

I have a tractor that cost less than the cab upgrade ... a 1955 Ferguson and no payments! Payments are like a stick coming up and slapping you in the face, or a swarm of pestilence bugs biting off your extremities. If you get a tractor that was used hard, it probably smokes a little bit and the bugs stay far away.

Tractors over here 🇬🇧, have to have safety cabs now, since the mid seventies. So I don't know if you have the same laws, this was because people were rolling tractors and becoming trapped under them if not worse, so now they come with safety cabs. Even though your comments are all valid they become unnecessary because of this. I've driven tractors for over 20 miles in winter without any safety or cover to our workshop, so so cold and we don't get the winters you do.

I'm looking at buying a tractor next year. Reason I want a cab is to keep wasps, yellow jackets, and hornets separate from me and them. My old man has been ran off several times due to wasps nests. A cousin of mine accidentally backed his open cab tractor into a hornets nest.

I live almost 2000 miles south of you but i think open station is usually preferable. You noted buttoning up and turning on musuc as a 👍. I do NOT agree. I seen too many guys just zone out and be distracted. A cab is fine, I guess, but no music! Too many accidents and mistakes from guys 'cutoff' from sensory feedback. Worried about pollen?...pop an allergy pill. Dust & grime? This aint a resort... As for locking doors to keep kids out....balderdash! I say put those rugrats to work as soon as legs can reach the peddles. Use an extension if needed. Those kids eat too much to not earn their keep. Keep them in the field and off the streets I say! I'm hoping you'll get a team like Jim Gordon of "Working horses with Jim". He's in upstae NY. Maybe you can drive fown and buy a team from him. He has full set of equipment and sawmill. Plenty of logging, hauling and plowing with his horses.
