@TaijDevon the difference between points and non points fighting in kickboxing at least is that a touch counts and its first to a certain number. Light contact, instead of full contact where you'd just shrug off a light hit to land heavier ones. I've never fought tyson, even if i was a straight boxer he wouldn't be anywhere near my weight category so that's irrelevant, also because hercules and achilles were fighting to the death.

The reality is that Achilles was meant to be unkillable because he was dipped in magic "sauce", so he really needed neither shield nor armor and could just easily cut down Hector and whoever he wanted to, without the need of doing a fancy jump. He could just let Hector swing at him till he got tired and not able to defend himself anymore, and then stab his sword through Hector. Achilles was fighting in his "God-like manner# because he had no fear of death as no enemy could hurt him. Apart from him getting hit in the achilles heel with an arrows dipped in poison and that killed him. The gods had to hold him somewhere(the achilles) when they dipped him and prevented that spot from getting covered with the magic "sauce". The makers either didn't really know or understand the story or they ignored it because it didn't fit their narrative of the movie.

Doesn't matter. A jump takes rather long time, no matter what and it telegraphs extremely well what you are doing and about to do. A trained fighter will have all the time in the world to react to it, no matter how little expected it is.

@@The_Judge300 A jump can be almost at you and then it takes almost no time at all. Why do you think feints work? It is because our mind does need time to recalculate but the attacker has already mapped out his moves. In the movie Achilles was making feints as he runs.

@@The_Judge300 Exactly, which is why Hector was able to block. He was a trained warrior and able to at least react and get his shield in position. The opening scene, the opposing champion was implied to be all brute force, little brains and Achilles was able to capitalize on that as his opponent likely was not used to to being charged and probably thought scrawny Achilles wouldn't be able to do anything to him.

​ @carnivore2023 In theory you're right. But I have pulled off this move against good fighters several times. There are some caveats, though. You can't do it more than once, since they need to be totally surprised. Also, they can't have a shield and you make the 200 meter dash only 3 meters. Lastly, you need to tweak it slightly so you don't expose yourself, and it helps if you manage to shock or confuse them with something else just before.

To really test this, I think you should ask a local university to lend you a hurdler or volleyball/basketball player or something. Achilles' thing was always that he's a supernatural athlete, as much as a warrior, and a surprising amount of height/distance/speed could be enough to make the difference---he only has to surprise them once.

Even those types of athletes still would struggle. Remember, Achilles is supposed to be a Demigod combined with the "Blessing of the Styx" which made it so he only had 1 weak point on his entire body.

It seems like the armed version of a Superman punch. Might be worth looking at how and why those are used and bring that to a sword

A Superman punch is delivered on the downward part of your parabolic trajectory under the force of gravity, adds your falling weight to your downward aimed punch which ends with your arm at more or less full extension, and the recipient being moved out of the way by the force of the punch. Achilles’ stab doesn’t though. He stabs downward and then pulls his sword out while at the highest point in his trajectory. If anything the Achilles stab is just a sneaky way to get past the shield of his opponent, going over the top rather than around the sides.

@@markfergerson2145 I think you pile all superman punches into one and I'm not sure it's fair. In UFC I've seen fighters using this move when they were at a reach disadvantage, to get in, as well. Plus we don't have to discuss only excatly the move Achilles does. I feel like this kind of sidestep is akin to the way some boxers pivot around their opponents, to get around their defences. It seems to me it might be a very practical move, but one that requires very precise footwork and timing.

@@markfergerson2145 The spear thrust he does in the movie and the one to Boagrius' neck (spelling? lol) he did pull back in, but the last one with the sword actually looks like it is a full extension that follows through to the ground until Hector moves backward. Even the spear one looks like it might have been only because it bounced off the shield, not a pull back, and the one that actually got into flesh you would expect to pull back to prevent your weapon from getting stuck. Still don't think it is a viable move outside of severely outclassing your opponent since so much can go wrong, but at least in principle I think the comparison to a Superman punch is a pretty good one.

Not an expert, but what i feel is the best feature is the tricky range. Most of the fighters will relax the guard when outside of the opponent range, normally even if you don't hit he will panic a little bit and you maybe get at the right distance

It's funny that Nate and Tyranth, at around 14:30, made mention of Hector gassing out during his duel with Achilles. This is significant, even with The Iliad, wherein Achilles had been sitting out for much of the battle. Hector, meanwhile, had been fighting since the arrival of the Greeks. It means that, barring blessings of the gods, Hector was on a back foot before the fight even got started.

@@keyboardking8008 Ironically, yes. Most warriors don't have the level of training that Achilles and Hector had, modern or ancient. If they died in battle, it would typically be because the other combatant got lucky or simply wanted to live more. As I pointed out before, both Hector and Achilles were in the prime of their lives, with equal footing by equipment and training. Hector actually had the leg up, as Achilles was still grieving the death of Patroclus, which means he could have been exploited and slain. Also, as I said before, while Hector could have baited Achilles out based on this, he was gassing out from what, three days of fighting and burying the dead? Day 17 of the battle was the only day Hector really had to rest, if I'm reading my timeline correctly. Hector's days were numbered and he knew it. He had to end his duel with Achilles fast, or he will die. (Spoiler alert, he died at Achilles's hands.)

Out of curiosity, in the movie it seemed to me like Achilles was using the move to create or exploit particular angles of attack combatants wouldn't expect a less limber opponent to use. In combat when using a shield do fighters get a tendency to become complacent to attacks on the shield side especially when using larger shields? Of all the times he uses that move the only time it seemed pointless was in the initial Hector spear segment.

Professional soldiers at that time had so much training with shield and sword/spear that they were prepared for everything. This is just some typical Hollywood nonsense that might look good for people watching the movie, but would get a soldier killed in battle extremely quickly.

Not a perfect analogue, but I have fought in the SCA using a shield, and I have noticed many people get complacent against attacks on that side, yes. The bigger the shield the more quickly they tire too, which makes it easier to exploit even if they aren't complacent.

He blocks the shield with his entire arm and has his hand on his chest so he isn't just jumping he is pushing up off of Boagrius. They did a terrible job of recreating/explaining/recalling the scene or even remembering when the move was used or the name of who it was initially used on. Achilles also used this move in the battle to take the Trojan Beach & Temple of Apollo.

The other thing that jumping does is that it hides your legs from counterattack, as seen at 15:05. Especially against an opponent who isn't expecting it, a jump attack with shield grab seems like it would be a viable tactic that wouldn't have too much risk other than the energy cost.

As you get tired it gets harder and harder to lift the shield high and your speed starts to drop. Throw a few mid hits to get them in the rhythm of blocking mid then jump high and come over the top. I could see that working. Even just as a test to see how tired and slow they were, providing you could keep yourself safe doing it.

The reality is that even a very fit fighter gets quickly tired in a fight because of the intensity of it. Both mentally and physically. You very well see that in MMA fights or in boxing. And it was even worse back in that time because their life was on the line. You will quickly get tired, so you don't have time to lull the other one into a rhythm. If you were much more fit than the other one, you could for sure outlast him and then kill him when he got to tired to defend himself well. And you would have no need for some silly Hollywood jump to win the fight.

Achilles is also approaching god levels of fitness and extremely confident given he thought he couldn’t be killed and wanted to show Hector just how outclassed he was. Even in MMA fighters have pulled off some very fancy and acrobatic moves to win matches and the jumping stab is really just an ungraded superman punch.

Watching MMA made me realize that jump attacks are generally not great, but when used properly it is a great distance closer, surprise attack and slight force multiplier. The risk you take for it is usually not worth taking, but often the enemy doesn't expect it and thus your openings aren't capitalized on while in the air or after landing. The main thing about duels, armed or unarmed, is that you have time to learn your opponent and you have time to make your enemy get used to certain attacks and overall pace. Jump attacks break the usual rhythm of the fight in such situations.

I saw Shad’s review of this fight scene and they are moving their shield away from their bodies all the time. Maybe if Achilles did the jumping attack at one of those times, he could have prevented Hector from blocking. Picture this: Hector has his shield to the side after missing an attack, and sees Achilles jumping towards him. He tries desperately to block with his shield, but is still moving it by the time the attack is about to land, so he doesn’t have much structure. This makes it easy for Achilles to push Hector’s shield down and stab him. I don’t know if this is realistic, so anyone who sees a flaw, feel free to point it out.

Hector could very easily move away from the jumping attack instead of trying to block it with the shield. The VERY huge mistake by doing a jump like this, is that you have to land and you are not able to change the direction you are going or where you land the moment you have left the ground in the jump. Making it extremely obvious where you are going to be in that moment and making it extremely easy to get away and extremely easy to time attacks on the legs as you have zero ability to move them away till you are fully landed and then ready to move with them again.

I don’t know if moving out of the way would be a good idea though because Achilles can change the angle of his spear thrust and stab Hector anyway. Achilles didn't fight like a mortal,he fought like a Demi -God! His movements looked more like dancing than actual fighting and he had the abilities to match his style. He and Heracles were the pinnacle of what a Human could be. That's why Achilles didn't wven broke a sweat the entire movie even against Hector with which he played rather than fight.

The main advantage and characteristic of Achilles repeated over and over again in the Iliad (and in other Greek literature) was that he was "swift of foot". He was really fast and apparently had the stamina to support his lightning speed throughout the batttle. I guess his speed and stamina would make such a move easy and effective for him.

You might have seen it, but Shadiversity made a video testing the combat applications of jump attacks. They showed that even a small jump could make your attack, as well as your positioning very predictable for your opponent, and that only jumping from higher heights actually increases the strength of the attack.

The interesting thing is that all these jumping attacks were done with the opponent fully aware and expecting it, and they still seemed potentially effective. Boagrius was most likely caught completely unaware, so the odds of it working exactly as shown were pretty high. Hector was obviously good enough to fend it off twice, but even he might have been somewhat surprised by it the first time since it was hist first direct combat with Achilles.

My .02... I do think the intent behind the move is a combination of style and intimidation. Style because damn does he look good doing it, and intimidation by delivering a hit to a shield that you know won't do anything, just to make the person worry about what would happen if they missed a block. This concept is something I used to use when fighting in the SCA. I fought axe and shield, and would purposely attack the opponent on the shield with more force just to make them fear that axe a little more, and from speaking with them afterward they all were intimidated by it. Now of course the jump needs to be more powerful for that to be a thing... but one part of that. If I recall he has his opposite leg lift and then has a full body torque at the top in those big jump thrusts which could be where the added power comes from. I didn't see any of you manage that part as dramatically as he does it in the movie. Something to consider at least! Though even assuming all that is true... still not something I would want to do against someone that was equal or better skilled than myself which also plays into Achilles' mentality.

Something that came up on another's channel that I didn't get a response from. I thought the little flags/pennons on the ends of light cavalry lances would be decorative only as a secondary function, but primarily to stop over penetration in a charge. A piece of cloth or tassel would act as a soft brake to prevent penetration far beyond the spearhead and thus stop losing the lance in combat on a single would be kill. However, this wasn't mentioned as any of the possibilities for having a pennon at the end of a lance.

Interesting, grabbing the shield does give an advantage and even a hit on the leg while it's off the ground could move the leg reducing the impact rather than one where it's solidly held on the ground. Their shields would also be heavier so harder to actually to get it up and hold it.

I was thinking that as well about the shield weight. And I guess it would be a high risk high reward maneuver, seeing as you could get hit in the legs which is survivable, but if the attack lands, you are stabbing them in the neck, which is an instant kill.

Either way, having a free hand to manipulate their shield means that you've dropped your own shield. Having your own shield is probably going to be the better choice in almost every circumstance. It's a desperation tactic

@@michaelcamu625 When having a fight like that and your life is on the line, you always consider the risks. And the chances of you being able to land a good hit in the head or neck with such a jump move compared with the risk of you getting hit in the leg are extremely different. You might be able to land a good hit in the head or neck against a trained fighter 1/10 times while he will be able to seriously hit you in the leg 9/10 times. You might survive that first good cut in the leg, but you will not survive the fight because of that first cut if you didn't manage to take out the enemy with that jump attack. The moment you miss and he cuts you deeply in the leg, you are doomed. You will have problems moving well enough and fast enough and you bleeding much will weaken you as well and he can easily win the fight. The only time a sane person would try a move like that, would be in pure desperation because he sees that as his only chance to survive the fight.

It may look doable at first glance, but I think Brad twisted his ankle doing this jump delaying production, and during the Hector fight the jumps were performed by a professional jumper (you can even see his face if you freeze the frames at the right time)

He's not a college kid on a steady diet of pizza and Coca Cola. And while it may seem impossible for basement dwelling virgins who never lifted anything heavier than a quarter-pounder in life, it's entirely possible for someone who actually exercises and tones their body for that kind of work. Of course, "I doubt it's really necessary for me to explain what I mean, right?" ;)

It's worth noting that Greek shields were not center-grip (at least, I don't think they were), so that would change both how the blow impacts the shield and how much effect grabbing and twisting it would have.

I love this fight. One of my favourite movie fights. Hector was one of my favourite characters. The little flourish that Achilles does after he cuts the top of Hectors thigh, when Hector goes to get Achilles foot. But he kicks it up. I actually used that move, or at least think of it and try to emulate the motion, when people would try to hook my ankle during a play.

In the clip you showed, Achilles does not touch his opponent’s shield. He puts his hand on the guy’s shoulder as he reaches the highest point of his jump, apparently to get a little extra height to make the stab. The top of the guy’s shield was just below his own shoulder. Achilles could have just as easily stabbed the guy in the throat. I’m with Nate- the jump is pure style.

I'd love for you to test some of the fighting styles from a manga called Vinland Saga. In the beginning the main character uses dual wielding daggers and speed. Later on an antagonist uses a spear that's modified to separate into 2 spears. Check it out I think y'all would enjoy it.

The jump/stab move is intended to drive a deep cut down into the chest cavity behind the clavicle but in front of the trapezius. If you're stabbing down behind the left clavicle, you'll easily sever the aorta and deeply wound the heart. Guaranteed lethal. A stabbing lunge straight on through the pectorals and rib cage could miss the heart or fail to penetrate far enough, but behind the clavicle there's no muscle or bone to stop the blade. It's also a quick and effective mercy kill if the situation called for it.

It's more intimidation than a viable attack, because I'm not sure that bashing a someone's shield a bit harder makes much difference. But the jumper might topple the defender over, which is good.

So I used to do Dagohir. Foam weapon larping. And I LOVED doing the Achilles jump stab attack. That was my go to signature move. Loved doing that attack. It helped me win so many duels. Fast forward to my college days and I started doing some HEMA style fighting. My first duel with my buddy who had been doing HEMA and he defended against my attack. First person to ever do it. I learned that day that the move is Very Flashy but VERY Telegraphed and is a move to be reserved for lesser skilled opponents. Or as a hail mary to get past polearm users

So just a bit of a fun fact one of the most devastating and underused punches in boxing that some of the greatest used is called the gazelle punch which while not that dramatic is in fact a jumping attack basically running what is normally a hook into a hook with a full 200+ lbs of weight behind the bio mechanics of it

I used this long ago and sometimes now from the 90's, we named in the gang "Puñalada Voladora", or "Flying Thrust". It's the "Flying Punch" or like they want to call it now "Superman Punch". In some theatres or situations (and depending the armor and protection of your antagonist) is useful or just a "vacilada" (trolling). Is not the rule for standard fighters following traditional HEMA, of course. A reverse version making a Terry Bogard "Crack Shoot" with a slash is often used, and it seems Soul Calibur developers took to the "newer" games on Siegfried's style.
