Is Alpine headed for DISASTER?

What’s going on with Alpine? They’ve had one car on sale since 2018, the A110, with only a second model appearing a couple of months ago, and that’s a rebadged Renault 5. In 6 years they’ve only sold 19,000 cars. And it’s not they’re selling $1M exotic Bugatti’s, The A110 is sold as a relatively affordable sports car. Alpine’s parent Renault have poured a LOT of cash into the brand, and even more into sponsoring a Formula 1 team, and many other motorsports championships, and all with little to show for it. On the face of it, it seems nonsensical, money thrown down the drain, and that was my opinion until I looked a little into Alpine’s strategy. So, just what’s going on, what’s are its chance of success and with the brand haemorrhaging money, and will Renault wind it up before the strategy has a chance to play out?

Renault went full GM or Stellantis with how they treated the Alpine brand, it didn't make commercial sense to rebrand the Enstone F1 team from Renault to Alpine where the A110 is the only car in Alpine's line up.
@kartaltoth684
@kartaltoth684 7 сағат бұрын
Renault rebranded the team so they could pretend they are a cool green company that doesn't partake in evil satanic things like motorsport but still get benefits from it (as a reminder Enstone in the hybrid era at worst always broke even money wise even in the Alpine era). Same reason why Renault Sport got killed and the same reason why Alpine was chosen as the brand instead of Renault for their LMDh.

Alpine also replaces all the RenaultSport cars going forward though -- so instead of a RenaultSport 5, it's the Alpine A290. Which makes sense since Alpines and RenaultSports have always (mostly) been made in the same low-volume Dieppe factory that was originally the Alpine factory, so really Alpine and RenaultSport is the same brand. Still, I would have called the car the Renault Alpine A110, just as some past Alpine models were co-branded.

Betteridge's law of headlines is an adage that states: "Any headline that ends in a question mark can be answered by the word no." When you look at how competitive European EVs are going to be compared to Chinese models, they are screwed. China has the supply chain and the technology. Europe is suffering with no more cheap gas from Russia, making affordable cars very difficult to make in the heartland. Even VW are preparing to close factories. Hence Alpine makes a lot of sense. Stick to low production numbers, make them exclusive and profit from each car sold. All they have to do is undercut Porsche.

The Drive published an article about the Clio RS16; it had the Megane-spec 271 HP motor, manual gearbox, front suspension from the previous-gen Clio RS and the rear axle lifted from a Clio R3T rally car, and even wider fenders. Problem was that the Dieppe factory had limited capacity, so it was canned in favour of the A110. I feel like it was short-sighted not to use the RS16, or transfer that hardware on the later CMF-B platform Clio V, as a second Alpine rather than waiting 7 years for the electric A290. Heck, according to Top Gear, Caterham were planning to rebadge and modify the Clio RS and the Captur(!) as mass-produced hot Caterham compacts prior to their partnership with Alpine getting cancelled. Plus, Renault knew about their plans too and were ready to supply them, so it's upsetting that they didn't do it themselves and allow the A110 to remain alone for half a decade

Since all western EU cars have to be EV by 2035, surely that plan makes sense? Not only is it difficult to get performance ICEs to meet Euro 6E let alone Euro 7 emissions (hence things like the 2500kg BMW M5 Hybrid, or 2100kg Mercedes C63 AMG hybrid), does it make sense to invest in ICE development for just 10 years? Realistically the barriers to BEV are cost, weight and people not having home garages. I've been reasonably convinced that hooking up corners on a mountain road in a hot hatch like say the Mini Cooper SE EV (the old one that weighs 1300kg, not the new 1700kg one with a bigger battery) can still be a lot of fun. Even without an ICE or manual gearshift.

Totally agree with the line-up. Could be hybrid or ev, if they are able to do it well. But building Crossovers/SUVs (or rather sell rebadged Renault Crossover) will make the brand completely pointless.
@TassieLorenzo
@TassieLorenzo 3 сағат бұрын
I don't know about that. Lotus has struggled despite having the 911-class Evora and Emira (and before that the Espirt). It's hard to get people to take the risk on something that isn't a Porsche. The old Alpine GTA and A310 *were* in the 911 class, they were direct 911 rivals, yet they were sales failures! All the usual objections are inevitable, unfortunately. "It's a fibreglass kit car" (be it the Espirt or the Alpine A310), "the quality and dealer support is not there" (people are still saying that about the Lotus Emira), "the badge doesn't have the prestige" (be it the Lotus one or the Alpine one), "you have to explain what it is" (what's a Lotus? what's an Alpine?) etc.

"then a 4-door sportsedan" A spruced up Renault Talisman, a bit like what Polestar did with the Volvo S60? Or do you suppose actually spending money on it, maybe on a Nissan platform like the Infiniti Q50 turbo V6 sedan? The KIA Stinger sports sedan (for example) only sold 25,000 units per year annually (nearly as poor sales as what the Holden Commodore sold just in Australia) and was cancelled as a sales failure. Or you suppose the Alpine sedan should be more upmarket as a kind of Maserati Ghibli or Quattroporte or Porsche Panamera rival?

If this was a Stellantis or G.M owned brand I’d agree, however they don’t have De Mayo running the show. I think he knows that if he tries to expand globally without a full product range and some brand recognition, it’s not going to work. Look at the ‘successful’ relaunch of Alfa Romeo in the U.S for proof of that. I also think that there is a wealth of talent within the company, the team that made the Renault Sport Clio and Megane such amazing driving machines must be giving the management some confidence they’re onto something, surely?

The problem with tooling up for big sales figures is that it's very expensive to do, you then need big sales figures, and they weren't guaranteed. There was a time when Renault were talking about closing Alpine, and then they changed their mind, deciding to launch 8 more cars. The factory's at full capacity as it is.

Do you suppose the strategy of calling the predecessor car the Renault Alpine GTA in North America was better or worse than just calling the car an Alpine and omitting the Renault badges from it? Personally I that complaint is illogical, IMO it's *totally fine* that the VW Up! and VW Phaeton have the same badge, or that the Honda Jazz and Honda NSX have the same badge. The Toyota Century doesn't have a Toyota badge on it, but it's still proudly a Toyota just as an Aygo is.

The A290 is probably one of the most underwhelming car announcements in recent memory, I really like the standard Renault version and was looking forward to seeing what a sportier version would be like. Hopefully they do make a hotter version later down the line (maybe a Dual-Motor AWD model) but the Premiere Model is already quite pricey for what it is so that's not exactly comforting.

It's a storied brand that has always been small, but the market gravitating towards electric SUVs rather than conventionally powered relatively lower priced sports cars may be jeopardizing it. However, their future plans sound a bit grandiose and unrealistic given the short time frame in which they plan to accomplish these goals.

Renault forget why people chooses german big ass engine over enginerring and handling... When I read a lot of comments about the A110R It didn't matter if the Alpine was faster on the track, had lower fuel consumption, was more agile or even because of its low weight it was much cheaper on wear parts on the track... No, none of this matters. The criticism for the Alpine was that the Porsche in comparison had a big engine that turned at 9000 rpm and a very expensive logo on the hood. I always saw this mistake in French brands, men are very simple sometimes so many times we choose the big engine (v6 or v8), it doesn't matter if it comes in an old platform, a bare interior, no space, etc... it doesn't matter. An exciting sounding engine with a prestigious brand overshadows everything else. I always see this pattern. If the Alpine A110 came with a heavy turbocharged inline 6 cylinder that burns as much tire as a BMW M4, it would sell like hotcakes in the US.

Alpine has been out of step with its potential customers for decades. I have owned two of their products, sharp-looking GTAs from the late 1980s which were hopelessly unreliable and, for a supposedly racing-oriented design, dangerously unstable. Their quality of construction, particularly regarding the interiors, was of Soviet Union standards and the electrical systems were hopeless, below Citroen quality. How they have clung on into the 21st century is inexplicable, their current "marketing proposals" are Smoke and Mirrors, and once the spendthrift French Government chooses to turn off the Euro tap they are sure to go under.

I cannot see this strategy succeeding. VW had Seat selling hot Cupra Leons and Ibizas for many years, created brand awareness over a twenty year or so timeframe, resulting in Cupra going it alone, and after 6 years they sold nearly 50k vehicles in 2024 Q1. I cannot recall any other successful offshoot over the last 30 years, Citroen DS is patchy, Fiat Abarth just as hit and miss, Mazda Xedos, Nissan Infinity,Mercedes Maybach failed to fully gain traction in their respective market segment. Alpine's current single offering is a cut price Porsche, but in the age of PCP and short term 'ownership' I cannot see many people going for Alpine, no matter how good they may be, no matter how much product advertising they do.

It’s interesting, from both a business and motorsport perspective they seem to be very idealistic; keen to do things their way irrespective of if it is the optimal strategy. Which in a way, I respect the non-conformity but it is also a shame that we don’t have more Alpines on the road and that also they seem to just be taking up space on various grids atm. They had that brief flash in LMP2 a few years ago and were fighting for points regularly at one stage in F1, but they’ve not been competitive in either endurance racing or F1 since, and barely anyone has bought their GT4 car. It would be nice to have another brand to add to the ones at the top in motorsport.

To be fair, EVs ARE fun. I had tons more fun in the Fiat 500ev than a Golf R. So EV sports cars have their place but fewer want sports cars as time progresses. SUVs and CUVs is where it's at if anyone is serious about profit and Alpine respectfully was a racing company not a baby carrier or snob mobile so... why?

@@jayartz8562 You are trying very hard to NOT understand that you do NOT need heavy big battery for sports car. Because sports cars are driven for a very short distance. NOBDOY drives 300-400 miles in one shot using a sports car. Am I right or wrong? Yes or no? Best speed, power, rapid deliverance, and agility can only be achieved with an electric engine, in EACH OF THE FOUR wheels. You are stuck with technology first developed more than 120 years ago - the complicated gas engine that needs transmission.
