The proposition has been made in sim racing many times: Assetto Corsa is better than Assetto Corsa Competizione. But is it really, and by what metrics? We take two identical cars and tracks to the test today in order to find out what's really what.

I completely abandoned AC as soon as I got my hands on ACC. But that's because I like gt3 cars. I found that ACC was easier to drive, makes it easier to setup the car, and has better and more structured multiplayer, better physics, non-black hole kerbs... But that's just cause I like the more focused and more polished nature of ACC. If you want to race all sorts of cars around every track in the world, AC is of course a better game.

I'm in the same boat. I still fire up AC once in awhile but the cars in ACC are excellent. Even though they are all the same two classes, each car feels drastically different to me more than AC does within a class of car. I think Kunos really nailed it with ACC, and even the VR is fine if you set it up now. I kind of look at AC as a driving sim and ACC, RF2, R3E, etc as racing sims. I fire up AC if I want to cruise or do Nordschleife Trackdays, otherwise I want to actually race.

It depends if you are a real life driver or you have only driven sims. Both Ac and ACC have weird things happen which do not in real life driving. Driving aggressively over curbs in real life is always risky, as it can change from one lap to the next, depending on exactly where you make contact, rubber laid on them, debris collecting on them, weather changes, etc. I see often people get caught out in sims when they say they "randomly spin", then they look at the replay and see that they either bottomed out, or there was a pothole which they didn't know about.

The developers said many times that Unreal engine's physics is only used for wipers, net movements in car, colisions with trackside objects and similar stuff. All the simulation side of things is Kunos engine, the same in AC just with many iterations of development on top of that. Regarding those slides - they are not something unusual. It is called "rotation" (different from turning). The only issue with ACC is that the ffb is very vague in that area and if you want to keep that rotation through the corner you have to kind of wild guess a bit with that "seasawing of the wheel". But its not hard to stop that slide if you want that - it just needs a fast and sharp correction. :)

One word. MODS. But, this is a very subjective question. To me I have more fun in AC simply because of Mods. My AC folder is 250Gbs full of tracks and cars. When a Developer makes their game moddable, its something that extends and breathes more life into it. Also, it can give it so much more as well as creating a bigger and closer community. If you look at any popular game that is/was moddable, they still have huge player bases 5, 10, or even 15 years later. Look at Half-Life "The OG" of mainstream modding and what it spawned (Team Fortress/Counter-strike), Quake 1-2, The Fallout games, The Witcher 3, The Elders Scroll games, and all the others (too many to count). Mods can make game last for generations. But for AC vs. ACC it also depends on what youre comparing. Obviously ACC is newer with a better graphics and physics engine but AC isnt drastically behind in that department and has so much more due to the wonderful modding community. With the right tracks, Sol, CSP, and Reshade presets you can even make AC look hyperreal and in some cases better than ACC. For example Ilya's new Rain Mod for AC destroys ACC rain FX. The track maps in AC are a little bland in terms of environments because modders might focusing more on the track other than the environment since nice assets can be a challenge to make or find to place in the track. But, the cars can look identical and have similar geometry levels, the shaders can look just as good, etc.). Until ACC implements Ray Tracing (because Unreal Supports it) than we might see an even bigger jump in visuals. This AC vs ACC is something that can be talked about for hours. But to chalk it one it one sentence. AC is the better "Overall" Sim for me but I still love ACC as well.

Project Cars 2 was abandoned, AC wasn’t. At some point you have to move on. What Kunos left the community with was a platform that could be built on for many years to come. You should really try an RSS, VRC or some of a little dated URD mods, to get what CSP and other development made possible in AC. And for direct comparison with ACC, there is an excellent Lanzo V10 from RSS, which you can better compare to ACC's Lambo GT3 evo than the 488. Still of course ACC has chassis flex, which makes a world of difference, but other than that AC is in my opinion on par with ACC in almost any other aspect. One might even argue, that slip and slide (the thing that IMO makes AC stand out and still so popular amongst sim racers, as it is the most realistic from all the sims) is much more accurate in AC. Also AC's strenght is the road cars. Those behave so accurately some times it's actually scary. Here is my comparison lap with Dodge Viper ACR on the Nordschleife (Beto Fernandez from BZ Simworks over at FB made this mod a while back with input from actual team that ran than car on the Nordschleife (it also includes the actual setup used on the lap record atempt)). I was within a second of the real lap record lap time for the duration of all 7 minutes and 1 second. And that is only due to mistakes made by me or the real driver. Majority of the time, we were within hunderts. And the speeds were never more tha 20 km/h apart. Also the slips and slides, braking points,.... virtualy identical: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXyvkJSFnd98n5Y . As far as I understood: The key of the weird curb behaviour lies within the amount of contact points. AC1 uses a one point model, which means if that contact point slips over the edge of the curb, it drags the entire tire with it. (I guess PC2 has the same issue, though IMO it's pronounced even weirder than in AC1). ACC got patched with a 5 point model the other day, which balances this out. As far as I remember, Stefano Casillo described exactly that scenario in his patch notes about the tire model. Talking about AC vs. ACC, I really dig AC1 and have spend hours and hours in it. But meanwhile I almost exclusively run ACC. And yes, I do run it in VR (Rift S on a RTX 3070 since last November, GTX 1080 before), which sadly still is far from superior, but the overall immersion, including the unparalleled audio engine, makes it so much enjoyable. Also, I actually did like the FFB when I still had my TM TX, and I like it even more since I got a DD wheel.

I like the attention to the little details that a more narrow focused title like ACC allows with the cars and the tracks and the tire models and BOP within a class. I also like that again more car classes or race series can be added one at a time including new tracks that again expand the scope and content of the game while still keeping those details and improvements along the way. There are so many avenues Kunos can go in the future as far as adding series and different car classes, a great one would be a North American IMSA series adding in all the iconic tracks used in that series, Touring car classes and series around the world, many would like to see an Australian V8 supercar series added, what about historic types of series as well, there are so many. I really like the possibilities but I also like the focusing on one thing at a time seems to bring so much additional details and look forward to what may come in the future. The wide open games that try to cover too many things at once lose so much of what can really make the game great the close competition while maintaining the feel of actually driving different vehicles. Give me the broad scope added in basically one chapter or series at a time that is really done right. I know since ACC added the GT4 cars that I have rarely driven a GT3 car as the GT4 cars are just so much fun to drive for me.

Tbh you probably didnt go deep enough, or drove fast enough (and with different cars) in ACC to come up with this conclusion. Im driving a lot the 488 evo lately to practice for some competitions and I can tell you that its a very competitive car but it also has a thin line between being fast and overdriving and killing your tires. Thats some of the beauties of ACC every car is a complex machine that works completely different from the other, and in this case that Im citing, I have to care a lot of the rear tires on the Ferrari so I dont kill them in a few laps, or end up overdriving and losing time. Is about finesse and ACC really rewards you when you apply the correct techniques and try to start pushing your car to the limit. So in my humble opinion you should try to go little bit deeper and find those nuances in those cars :)

@@dansolo6684 About 300 hours is enough to make my opinion and just did some Special Events including still Top 25 results when I was checking last week. I don't like GT3 cars in general and I analyzed the driving style of Jardier. Pedal inputs are simply 0/50/100% plus trailbraking and that's not anywhere close enough to control real racecars even with TC. In AMS2 I can see who is driving more ACC, because they are spinning all the time. There is no 'one and only' driving line with enough rubber like in ACC, but you need to be precise with your feet. A bit less with GT3's as well, why I prefer others, but all GT3 and GT4 are more enjoyable to drive in AMS2 than in ACC for my taste. I also do iRacing and it's like ACC more a skill game than a driving simulator, but it at least teach more authentic driving lines (straight line braking, slow in, fast out) and punish ACC alien driving styles, which has not much resemblances to real onboard footage.

Nice video. Wholeheartedly agreed that ACC beats AC with the same car/track combination, no doubts. ACC ruined GT3s for me in other sims. As a bit of feedback to your video, ACC's physics have nothing to do with UE4, the physics started as a 1:1 copy of AC inside UE4 and worked with from there. So in that sense the same improvements could be moved back to AC, but don't quote me on that :D In my opinion, modding is what keeps AC alive, of course, but it kind of ruins it a bit as well. You cannot get a consistent package of a sim. New CSP stuff is released, well 3 or 4 tracks/cars have it, for the others as well as for mods you have to write them or wait and hunt on the internet to find them. It's always troubleshooting with AC. Regarding the actual 488 GT3 from BK you drove here, from exterior shots you can see that the interior becomes very bright from a certain distance. Track Reboot Suzuka in AC? You add 25 AI cars and the sim goes into slow motion mode for me, time literally slows down (very strange, no other mod track does this for me). ACC feels so weird for me to drive, it's like there's too much drag induced on the tires if you drive with any sort of slip angle. I legitimately don't know how to go faster in the game, it reminds me of iRacing circa 2012 or 2013. I've tried to pick it up numerous times and it just doesn't make any sense to me at all. With AC I can jump in with no practice without having played the game all week and it feels so much like a real car that I can be instantly quick. I just drive how I know to drive in real life and I usually rocket to the top of the qualifying leaderboard on places like SRS. In fact it's allowed me to cut back on the time I spend gaming and I can go out with friends more during the week and not have to worry about practicing for league races. The problem with AC is that it's super rough around the edges. The menus and UI are both ugly and it feels like I'm playing X-Plane when using content manager. Just setting up a race against the AI feels clunky and archaic and mod quality is all over the place. But in terms of raw driving there is no replacement.

i think the fact that AC is going so strong especially because of the modding community, is a strong point when it comes to whether or not Kunos decides to stick long term with ACC or to develop Assetto Corsa 2. My guess is that if they see how popular AC1 is, that they will want to bring the successor in AC2 because clearly there is demand for a title that offers this kind of spectrum of cars, ranging from regular somewhat sporty cars to hypercars and racecars ranging from touring to open wheel beasts. just the same official content that AC1 has, if you take all this keep or improve physics and ffb, and put it into a new graphics engine and give it a bit better or enticing career mode, it would sell like hot cakes and also outsell ACC.

yep, totally. I think the massive popularity of the Forza Horizon games recently (even with sim racers, although the physics are pretty bad) should show them that a lot of people prefer to have a giant selection of cars and tracks, and the ability to compare offline lap times with others rather than focusing on a small subsection of racing. Imagine a game like AC with the car selection of FH4, but attention to detail of ACC. That's my dream haha.

Everyone is talking about mods, mods but as a singleplayer guy, I'm having a really hard time appreciating AC despite the huge amount of community content and improvements. It's just not made for championships, full-length races and pit stop strategies. The AI is still pretty flawed too, only except when you want to do short races starting last and going first overtaking the bots one by one like an arcade game. ACC, while simplistic, it does offer some sort of functioning singleplayer content, and the netcode is better for multiplayer races (but I may be wrong in this).

I might be wrong. I haven't even played ACC, but with the talk of AC2 next year, I think there's a good chance that they've been using ACC as a way to generate money and to push their simulation tech forward at the same time in a more focused and specific way (getting in all of the physics necessary to simulate one type of car, but making sure it's modular enough that it can be adapted to other classes and conditions at the same time). I imagine they probably started AC with good intentions, then realised the absolute mountain of a task they brought upon themselves. As time was going on, they needed money to push things forward and so learning from their mistake, they made a new more focused game that isn't a sequel. It can be used in tandem with AC because right now they serve different purposes, being a spin off of sorts demonstrates that GT isn't going to be the focus forever. On top of that, they've licensed out AC to 505 I believe to make a mobile version of the game, making money both on sales and licensing fees too in a market that has no real sim competition (I know it won't be anywhere near as good as even AC on PC but still, for mobile it'll be decent I suppose). I feel like AC2 might just be something truly special if I'm right. But I could be totally wrong.
@Bazzookie
@Bazzookie 3 жыл бұрын
Honestly Assetto Corsa's fatal flaw imo is the tire model at the limit. There have been many times in races where pushing the car leads to an unrealistic loss of traction and a spin that is uncatchable, and It's why I prefer rF2. I can push a car the same way I have when driving on track in real life or on some empty mountain roads. The most important aspect of driving is the limit, and how much you're actually able to play around with it. Real cars have a lot of play around the limit allowing for a lot of creativity and different driving styles, and the only exception to that would probably be super high downforce cars like F1 cars, and really that's where AC is most fun imo, with like the RSS Formula cars. ACC has made massive improvements over AC but even still, I just never get around to playing it because of its locked nature. Not being able to run mods and rip around in basically any car the modding community is willing to give you is a real drawback, and because it's solely focused on GT cars you only get that, GT cars.

I'm driving in VR and ACC is criminally bad for both terrible performance and a VR only rendered HUD, trying to browse menu's in VR using a mouse and keyboard with a headset on is super annoying. It's basically impossible to get a solid 90fps whilst keeping it looking acceptable, let alone crisp. AC looks literally twice as good in VR with my Pimax/3070. For a while I was mostly racing in ACC, it's definitely got the edge on AC in terms of the ranking/server system and I think the tyre physics feel better, for sure curbs 100%. But recently I jumped into some new AC GT3 mod cars and the it felt much more alive. Everything in ACC feels muted to me now, particularly haptic feedback feels way better through simhub, as does belt tensioners and wheel feedback on my CSL DD. After spending time and money on sim hardware & setup, it feels like there aren't any sims that have it all, but ultimately I think AC still sets the bar - even with it's dated physics. If they went back and gave us ACCs physics in AC I'd buy it all over again.

This was such a weird sensation at the beginning I actually uninstalled the game xD. Ac is more predictable to me and its ffb is maybe not more realistic, but at least more consistent and detailed. Which is important to me. If I can not see or feel a slide coming, catching it is not fun at all, while in ac you can really anticipate slides and it feels awesome when you then correct it at the exact right moment. Comparing AC with ACC is completely missing the point already. Obviously ACC is better in simulating GT3 and GT4 cars...that's the whole and only point of the sim! ACC can't and doesn't want to compete with AC because it hasn't got open wheelers, road cars and V8 Supercars, so naturally it won't be better in those areas than AC. Assetto Corsa Competizione is NOT the sequel to Assetto Corsa. It's a wholly standalone product made to simulate the SRO, and ONLY the SRO Leagues. If someone thinks that ACC is worse than AC because of the simulation, then he's simply delusional. I think David Perel knows more about GT3 cars than the average Chair racer. If someone thinks that ACC is worse than AC because of the content, then fair enough, but it's not the game fault, it's your personal preference playing a part here. Just my ten pence on the whole debate but in my opinion the whole debate is just another case of "I wAnT tO cOmPlAiN cAuSe SiMrAcInG ArGhHhHhH ReEeEeEeEe" Just enjoy the pleasure of driving jeeeeez...
