Is this the end of Automotive KZbin as we know it? Is Donut Media Fracturing? Will Hoonigan survive the death of Ken Block? Is Motortrend on KZbin still viable? Grab a drink and let's chat!
Obviously the big automotive news at the moment is Zach Jobe and Jeremiah Burton leaving Donut Media to start their very own KZbin channel, Bigtime. This is a massive blow as they are undoubtedly the two most component wrenchers in of all the presenters, and easily two of the most respected. Their reasons for leaving? The job not being what they wanted, and after being acquired, you can totally understand their thinking.
Hoonigan once a titan of the Automotive KZbin space with Ken Block and his Gymkhana series is now struggling to retain viewership and interest. Without the massive celebrity front man, can they, or should they, keep going?
Finally we have Motortrend, undoubtedly the most well known name on this list for many, but a brand that's nonetheless struggling with viewership and growth. Their main star front men are essentially gone, Both Mike Finnegan and David Freiburger only loosely fronting their series.
There's a lot to talk about! Pour a drink, sit back, and let's chat!

I watch the shops channel and then yours because I enjoy the actual wrenching on"real" cars and hot rods. This is the same reason I watch channels like Iron Trap Garage. Matt builds early Ford hot rods many with flat head V8's keeping the old school 50's and 60''s looks. Or Skidmore 's Garage from the UK who builds complete tube frames for the older Mini's many with Hayabusa power plants. Then there is D&D Sped Shop. The common point is you all do real work. You don't hide the broken bolts or rusty frames. Then there are those measurements or you just decide to redo something simply because you don't like how it looks. Keep it real I'll keep watching.

Here's my take. For those of us who grew up before the internet, cellphones, and social media we rarely spent time inside at home. So, we had spots that we would hop on our bike or skateboard and go to. Hoonigan was that spot, a common place to hang out no matter what you were into it brought all different people together. Gary is trying like hell to keep things going, but once everybody split up and went their own way and Wheel Pros pulled their presence back it's like they tore the hangout spot down. Motor Trend was great on their own app, now that they are part of Discovery+ I don't watch the content as much and also they have been taking so long to release new content that I sometimes wonder why I still have a subscription. I liked watching Donut, but feel like it's recycled content. I've been watching a lot of DDE lately, because it's not so much about the cars as it's about hanging out with your peeps and enjoying life.

@@AutomotiveAdventuresWithAustin some of my favorite KZbin channels were just regular guys working on stuff in their garage and having fun with their friends trying to figure shit out. Like I also like to do. They didn't know everything or have fancy tools or shops. Something is definitely lost when they go from doing that to having to generate content to grow their revenue and it becomes a business

Watching Hoonigan decline has "hurt" me because I have spent most of my adult life with that brand. I have spent years going out to see Ken. Rally, Rallycross, Hill Climbs. I have spent years being entertained. Donut hasn't been there for me like Hoonigan. And over the years the only thing I enjoy about Motor Trend is the Inevitable pod. I hope these new channels don't sell out and just are content with enough to pay the bills and make a living.

Nailed it with the KZbin observation. The Baja truck is cool, but it really does feel like something they just felt "Oh, well nobody is documenting this on KZbin like this so it's lucrative and unique!" But you're right. People can't relate to it. Some automotive content is done intentionally that way, like Doug DeMuro. Highlighting crazy supercars and whatnot, but that was the expectation. Donut's Money Pit and HiLow were their best series and they moved away from it in favor of sponsorship dollars. I found YOU guys because of the 79 AMX. We both have tired examples of those cars. You guys revived yours the way I've been wanting to do mine for (this hurts) 7 years now. The biggest issue is people blaming hosts. Freiburger and Finnegan live an awesome life and they'll continue to do that for as long as it makes them happy. I don't fault them at all for continuing with Motortrend. Pole Barn Garage and Junkyard Digs are two examples of the last "big" KZbin channels that still post relatable content and I think they're being rewarded for those efforts. New people will emerge and the cycle will continue. But it's a strange spot right now.

Nice discussion Austin. I can say I stopped watching Motortrend when they combined it with Discovery. That was the last straw as it were…I liked having my automotive only content and when I had to start searching through all sorts of crap just to find a show I wanted to watch, that was it for me. I have scaled back my KZbin channel as well…as you know lots of work for little reward, and wanted to focus on my own stuff. I will pick it back up but definitely lost some motivation.

Look at Motortrend, scripted, lots of fluff trying to coattail off Roadkill, and the fluff is polished, packaged, programmed. Its freakin TV, corporate owned TV. The people who watch us aren't drawn in by TV. You can see where Donut is going, corporate owned and the TV people come in and turn it into corporate owned TV, which nobody wants to watch. Like you said, its not relatable, but more importantly, its not interesting to see people throw money at a vehicle. Hoonigan was Ken, keeping it going without him would be an impossible task. The guys who were there are doing their own thing and some of them are getting it going. Alex and Derrick both got 'jobs' at MT. I'm not saying they sold out, but they both allowed themselves to be 'owned' to a certain extent. I can see where having a steady paycheck is a benefit, been there done that.. except I had to join the military to get it. If I hadn't joined the military again in 2000, its almost a certainty that I would have been noticed by 1320, because we have lots of mutual gearhead/racer friends, and I was making videos on VHS back then. Knowing that money is coming in gives you peace of mind. Then there is you, me, Jeff, Tony, Andy, Dalton.. all of us crazy guys who build stuff on a budget, and we make videos of our projects. Its not scripted corporate TV, its ordinary guys doing the stuff we all do, and letting others in on the process and the projects. That is fun and interesting for the guys who can't do what we do, lacking the time, skills, shop, car, tools, whatever. They can live vicariously through all of us. The OTHER thing... you and all of us other guys who make videos about our car projects are MOTIVATING other guys to work on their own stuff. That project car they haven't been motivated to do something with that car sitting in their garage. We all know those guys, who haven't touched the car in years, and its a shelf, buried under all sorts of stuff, because the interest isn't there. Now here is the interesting part. You've seen my Cuda and my 68 LeMans, one is shiny and nice, the other is ratty with a ludicrous blown engine in it. Took them both to a show last weekend, and guess which car got the crowds around it checking it out. The shiny green Cuda? It got some attention, but every time I looked back at the ratty LeMans, there were people around it, usually trying to figure out what the engine is since its not a chevy. The point I am trying to make is, people want something different, and they want something that speaks to them on a visceral level, the projects that grab their attention and pull them in. They see that nice show car and they have seen hundreds just like it before, like oh its another sbc powered red 69 Camaro or 32 Ford. Yawn... zzzzzz... Know what they haven't seen? A supercharged Pontiac engine in a old rusty shell that sat since 1982 in a pasture, and was painted with $60 worth of tractor paint ten years ago so its all flaking off. The look of my LeMans is 100% intentional... I want it to look that way, but its real, naturally occurring, not manufactured. I let the weather have its way with that cheap paint, and its perfect, the more messed up it gets the better it is. Thing is.. I like it to look that way. I am building the cars I used to draw in high school 40 years ago. They haven't seen an AMC Pacer/Matador with a blown 360 or 401, or maybe a TDi in it. They might not care about that much, but they haven't seen it. The mundane stands out when you do something unexpected, completely random, and out of the ordinary. The TV people do not get that. Thats why Roadkill did so well before they put it behind the paywall to extract the most from it they possibly could. If you get big, don't sell it to anyone else, no matter how much money they wave at you. All they will do is package it like a Jurassic Park lunch box then milk it and you for all you're worth as they start dictating to you how to do what you are already adept and competent at doing. Stay real, don't script it, be who you are. People will watch the genuine article.

Interesting topic and timely for me. Ironically, i just went through my subscriptions last night and unsubscribed to several larger channels that I have not watched in months - including VGG and Flying Sparks - because the content seems to have changed in my opinion. I think the clincher was the HRPT coverage - or lack of - and recent videos looking like they were lengthened without adding meaningful - to me - content. It's all just my opinion but it feels like the larger channels I watched are chasing something different now; a little like Mecum coverage that used to include the early-day lots in my price and interest range then progressed to a focus on high end high dollar stuff. I haven't watched a Mecum auction in years. End of "back in my day"/"get off my lawn" rant. 😁

I hate to say this, because the love the two guys from the channel, but BigTime is going to go one of two ways. They will go the Derek route and sell out to major sponsors or they will fail. I mean, look at what they are used to. Donut Media. My guess is that they hope to grow like Donut has. I've never watched Hoonigan or Motor Trend (yes, I've always been very aware of who they are). I'm more interested in the "drag it home and get it running" channels. Like Pole Barn Garage, Junkyard Digs, and Irish Outlaw Garage. As a matter of fact, I was able to meet you on day one of Power Tour with Jay hanging around his ambulance and Ranchero.

First, Vice Grip has inspired to work on my 97 12 valve as I use it as a daily driver. The motor trend version is ok but, I wouldn't go out of my way to watch. I used to watch the Motor Trend Channel 6 to 8 years ago and moved to an area that didn't have MT. The last year I have been traveling and stay in hotels and have turned on MT. 85%+ of the time the shows are ones that I have seen all those years ago. The auctions that they show are fun for a about 1/2 hour for me. Wheeler dealer and to a way lesser degree roadkill is about the only I can generally see that is new to me. This is the first I come across this utube channel and will be checking out more.

Agree with you on the direction of Automotive KZbin. Donut, MotorTrend and Hoonigan (Also DriveTribe and CarThrottle in the UK) are all in a major transition period for sure. But the independent creators are in a good spot. Some of the legacy TV shows or brands I've worked with professionally have embraced KZbin (Stacey David Gearz/PowerNation) finally vs fight against it. Truthfully it really wasn't the talent fighting against it but the media/TV companies who own the content. MotorTrend is now part of HBO/MAX/Discovery so they want to funnel you through their own streaming service. But at the end of the day, KZbin is the biggest video platform in the world and I don't believe there is any negative effect of their content also living on KZbin. On my side, I've had my channel as my personal channel since whenever KZbin started. I am in the automotive aftermarket business for my day job and my family business (day job marketing agency and family biz manufacturer). I grew up and worked in drag racing and in my Dad's speed shop. I don't have huge aspirations for my channel but I have used it as a way to document my car stuff since my Dad passed in 2020 and I have been selling stuff from his old speed shop for my mom and to finish the cars. It has helped me move parts, and I'm going to document our car builds, events I go to and am having fun with it. KZbin should be fun. Maybe I'll make some money beyond what I'm using it for. That would just be a bonus.

I wouldn't say the automotive side of KZbin is failing at all. I think as you said the larger groups are definitely fracturing and this has to do with the fact of ownership and creativity rights to videos. I never really watched a lot of the Hoonigan videos cause they were just there for entertainment which is fine but I like watching the little channels like HevyChevy and such because its still entertainment but more on a personal level and relateable. Never could get into Donut Media so can't say much about them but I did use to watch VGG but once his videos started getting into the 1 hr+ length it was just too much and this goes for other KZbinrs out there as well. I wouldn't say I specifically do automotive stuff but its what most of my content is and I know that if I want to keep people around making appropriate length videos is key because a persons time is important. I enjoy what I do and I enjoy that people watch my stuff and if I can help someone fix something or learn something then that is awesome and why I feel the automotive side is still alive just more in a smaller capacity. I know of you because of Old Man Garage and one of the videos I watched of yours was the AMX car and that thing brought back memories too when I was a kid. So keep the content going and stay being relatable and lets keep this side of KZbin alive.

I have never watched a full video of Honigan's or Donut Media, I admit, I have not checked a lot of their videos but the ones that I clicked on did not hold my interest. I prefer to watch channels that I can relate to. I am a poor boy and can't afford to do a $100,000 build. I like to watch Guys, or Girls like myself who have a small budget and have to buy junk, and turn it into something drivable and maybe throw a cheap paint job on it, or not, patina is great, it started with rat rods and 50s era stuff but it is spreading to the muscle cars. You don't have to have a lot of money to build a cool car. Thats why I like your channel and a few others. I watch Dereks channels, Flying sparks garage, Gnarly speed shop, D&D, Saw customs, Pole barn garage and Ratty GTO garage.( you should check him out if you have not) , he has 2 old ratty goats. I am working on a 70 goat myself so your Lemans got me started watching your channel. Small guys rock! I enjoy finding shows like horsepower TV was back in the 90s and 2000s where you actually learned something. I eat breathe and sleep old cars but I get sick and tired of seeing the same shows. PBG is so desperate to make content it's just dumb the stuff he films. And pushing overpriced merch is annoying. You do not worry about the channel when it's making money unless you have gotten to depend on that money for either A. The continued existence of that channel or B. Your own existence. I should have added in another reason to worry......GREED! 💲💲💲💲💲 The channels that do it strictly for fun without monetizing, are the ones that truly don't worry at all! 😮 For every you tube channel that dies my guess is there's a whole lot more.. Like maybe hundreds.... Taking their places. YT channels are not going away. They are actually increasing in number at a massive rate. I have noticed that as time passes, even alcohol and drugs are being shown more on video than ever before. Hell there's even drinking and smoking channels, you know that! 😮 So chill out and just keep on doing it as much as you want. Work your day job to pay your bills and put in as much time on your channel as you want. 😊 You'll be a happier man by doing so! Just forget what the big dogs are doing out there, and maybe one day.... You'll be a big dog too! 🎉😂 Later. J Poll. . YOU TUBE Automotive

I think that Tyler Hoovies Garage is also going down hill as well... Even Cleetus Is not doing as much drag racing content. Then you have a less content from Kyle from Boasted Boiz. Everyone is doing much LESS and moving away from the backgrounds.

When private equity gets involved, extraction of capital becomes the ONLY goal. Doesn't matter if it's sh!tty content as long as it gets clicks for more ad revenue.

I totally agree with you there, I couldn't believe they did that when they did, and they really don't make enough GOOD content to justify the cost.

DEI Is what wrecked Donut Media. I know they where all hired to present content but they all clicked and had great chemistry now they look like they are all working against each other and have little in common. Wrecked

I mostly watch independent tubers. I don't like the big mainstream media tubers because it's not real.

Personally, I like to watch the up and coming channels the most. The one thing that makes me stop watching them is when they start pimping for sponsors. If you want to make a killing off KZbin, fine. But don't try to convince me that you're actually drinking that nasty looking AG1 crap everyone is selling out to. We're not stupid. We don't want to see fake.

I've never cared much for any of the channels you're talking about, especially Motor Trend. To much sponered, and or clickbait content for me.

That is the reason i watch Ivan a@pinehollow, it's raw unfiltered fixing. At the same time, i can't watch ray anymore. Probably because of the anti depression drugs he is taking. I just can't take that

I prefer watching the smaller less popular guys, no offense, and tend to lose interest when they become big time success’s. Then they tend to become scripted and as you say less relatable, just putting out content for the sake of it. Hope your dad’s feeling better and yes I’ll probably unsubscribe you when you hit a million😂

I watched donut religiously from the beginning. I looked forward to every new episode. That is until James went off on a liberal rant about Tucker Carlson for no apparent reason or benefit to the content other than he’s a liberal hack like the rest of Hollyweird.

Yeah, Cleetus is failing, so is Emelia Hartford, 1320 videos... wait, you're just reaching for something to talk about. Typical, rather talk than work .
