2 Choices. #1 With 461 horsepower and 558 lb-ft of torque, our 502 HO crate engine has power on tap for every need - whether it’s a ’69 Chevelle at the drag strip or the Suburban that towed it there! #2 The HT502 is rated at 406 horsepower and a whopping 541 lb-ft of trailer-tugging torque. That’s more than the factory ever offered and more than you’ll get with a stock-type rebuild. It is uniquely suited to pre-1978 trucks, but is adaptable to a variety of applications.

Unless there is something really wrong with the stock engine I would just rebuild it. Maybe add a turbo for those uphill climbs. I think it's the gearing that is the main problem, those tires are not stock. My f-150 had the 4.9l strait 6, it would go fast uphills in 3rd gear with stock tire size.

@ovrlxnd8 жыл бұрын
My 87 had the TBI 350 and a Hypertech chip with no mufflers and dual pipes after the cat. It never lacked for power, and it sounded great! It would break over the 35s even though it only had 3.42s, although that was always a bad idea in a 200,000 mile 10-bolt that would grenade the spider gears every few years. The 1987 TBI setup was good for an additional 50 HP over the carbureted from the previous years, but the Cold War-era OBD system wasn't particularly adept at giving you useful codes when things started going wrong. I think you should just build a mild 350 for the truck and use a modern aftermarket OBD2 fuel injection solution. You'll have the best of both worlds: a bolt-in engine, built of affordable, common parts, that plays good with modern scan tools.

What gear ratio does Big Green have. My '80 Powerwagon has 3.2ish gears. It also has the granny low first gear NP-435 transmission, turning 35" mud tires. Still running the original 360 4bbl, and the part of watching you guys bouncing around the cab, made me smile. My PW is like that, 4" lift, but it's a long bed, club cab, when my daughter was 6, her first ride in the truck, she looked at me, and said this is like riding in the back of a school bus. 15 years later I've gathered Dana 60 axles, NP-205 transfer case, and the 1 ton drive shafts. Going from 1/2 ton to 1 ton drive train. I think gear ratio is still to high, I wanted 4.10.

adam was right about the front end configuration! I have an 80 k10 I'm building with an ls engine and in 80, they have the square headlights and the round headlights..... I think Scottsdale, which i have, was the only one that came with round 7"headlights and 2 different grille options...... they are a mystery body style.... I have a k10 which is a half Ton, with 3/4 ton springs, 3/4 Tom axels that are configured for 6 lug, the ls6 350 which is a 4bolt main with hydrolic roller rockers from factory, the th350 and an np205 tcase... also the front axel is a dana 44 which is a rare option in 80 bc they stopped really putting them in since 78 but a special option they were (from what i was told from gm heritage) the factory 10bolt front axle is the exact same thing as the Dana 44 just the gm product but thwy are interchangeable parts wise depending on your axles and gears!!!!! They are great trucks and a lot of potential.... I love straight axles and had them in all my trucks and so did my dad...... the hearing sucks especially since I have 3.08 so i can be doing 75 but the engine is running at 4k rpms lol but shes a good truck...... beat up and old and smoked a ton and leaks every fluid except gas.... only reason why it does leak gas is because she uses it before it even leaks lol I love you truck though looking forward for the build.... like the old body style better.... also, with a 73-80 c/k102030, the hood bows in the center which they are notorious for but they make good braces at LMCTRUCK to keep it from doing it in the future....... If you if need a repair manual from 1980 let me know and ill see if i can post the link.... it literally shows yoy how to diagnose everything from each pin on the electrical to the torque spec on the carb bolts!!!!!!
@diver68438 жыл бұрын
Chevy trucks 1981 had turn signals in the bumper, it was the only year in 1982 they moved them to the grill and the light configuration was determined by trim level, the higher trims had 4 head lights apposed to the two light setups . I would put a low compression 350 in with a turbo for your altitude.
@BERPSU18 жыл бұрын
Turns signals were in the bumper in '82 also. Wasn't a one year thing. They weren't moved to the grill (on quad light models) or below the headlights (single headlight models) until '83.

Keep big green simple, a 350 simple crate engine, Holley fuel injection kit, and the biggest thing that will help, is gearing, find some used 3/4, 1 ton axles and re-gear it, 3.73's or 4.10s.

I'd consider an LS2 with a carbureted intake. 460HP! Easy installation. Another option would be a LSX 454. Perhaps a 5.3 crate engine? Great power and torque, with some good gas mileage, but a more complex installation. You can find a set of CUCV axles to back it all up for about $1,600-$2,000. Matt Lane nobody said they weren't reliable or cool easy. I said they're everywhere and the a Duramax would be different. You've got a nice ride with the green truck the way it is, I wouldn't want to get too crazy with changes. I'd like to see a mild 350 or 383 - keep it simple and add some usable torque or top end, or maybe a 5.3 LS. too much power and you're going to wind up re-engineering the rest of the truck. Wheel hop and the strength of the half ton rear axle will become issues with too much power. Also regarding your question about the headlights & grille. Single vs Dual headlights relates to the trim level and optioning for 81-87 trucks. Custom Deluxe trucks (base model) all came with single headlights. Scottsdale (mid-level) could have single or dual, and Silverado (loaded) all came with dual headlights. The badges are removed on your truck but some of the shots of the interior show base model optioning (door panel style & black gauge bezel), so I would guess you have a fairly original custom deluxe model. The center section of the grille is for an 85-87 truck, but grilles are easily interchangeable. You can change to dual headlights but it requires changing the front core support that the lights mount to.
@sethpage4168 жыл бұрын
The headlights are not quads because of the trim level of the truck. Big Green is a base model which is evident by the lack of headliner, black gauge cluster, and short door panels.
