Manual transmission, transfer case, hubs, windows, locks, and tailgate means simpler, lighter, and less stuff to malfunction. It also means less service work for the dealers and replacement part sales for the manufacturers. In other words, we'll never see vehicles manufactured like that again.

This body style of truck was awesome, I had 2 blazers in this body style both with a small lift an 33" tall by12.50" wide, one was a 1976 and the other was a 1984, I opted for blazers so that I could take the top off which was awesome when cruising down the highway in the summer and also because they had a shorter wheelbase and had a back seat so I could take 4 people wheelin with me at once, they were fun as hell to take wheelin and at the time I had a 2 year old 1996 pickup that cost me a good amount of money and I used to take it wheelin and I got tired of beating up my nice almost new truck so that's why I decided to get the blazers and with the solid axle front end they were indestructible. I even took one in the tough truck race before the monster truck rally and took 3rd out of 24 challengers, I got to bring 2 friends to be my pit crew and it only cost me $50 to enter and after taking 3rd I ended up winning $150 plus then me and my 2 friends got free admission to watch the monster truck rally afterwards! Needles to say I had a ton of fun with those blazers!

I'm so heartwarmed to see this video. Little backstory, my boss owned an 82' K10 Flatbed, it became at one point the only vehicle I drove and we worked it for many years. That truck was amazing, bumpy, powerful, and you looked like a total badass. We actually called it "Big Red" because he owned a smaller red chevy as well. We used and worked that truck even when it was the last vehicle we owned that worked. Sadly on Christmas Eve one year Big Red was rear ended since we didn't have the funds to really work on the carburetor issues. I stalled out in a right lane and its been totalled sitting in his friends yard ever since. That truck defined my youth even as someone who's only 30. They don't make trucks like they used to and my little S10 still brings me a lot of joy, but nothing compares to the K10 body and how amazingly simple and effective it is while having a style that I feel is so much better than modern cars.

Most definately cool. Arguably, the body style went until 91 though. GM kept the square body style on the Suburbans and the Crew Cabs, then in 92 updated those trucks to the next body style. I've had a couple of these trucks, I have a 76 GMC Jimmy, granted it's much shorter, and an 82 Suburban and my Dad has a 74 K2500 GMC. We never ran into any cracked frame issues so that's a new one on me. We hauled a lot of hay with the K2500. The only one of the 3 to have A/C is the Suburban, and it's the fancier A/C unit because it is the Silverado package. I do think GM should have come out with the 5 speed manual for these trucks much sooner. One can install them now, since adapters are available to put pretty much whatever into whatever. But true, the SM465 is pretty bulletproof, just not as efficient. I believe the 5.7L diesel was still available at this time yet, but may have been discontinued in 84. GM finally got all the bugs worked out of that engine, and the last few years it was a real good, powerful, efficient engine, but the previous issues with it gave everyone a bad taste for the engine so the 6.2L came out to replace it. It's too bad, because it ended up being a good engine. My dream truck in this body would be a Crew Cab K2500 4 speed with the 5.7L diesel in the last year offered. Only change I'd make would be to swap out the 4 speed with a newer 5 speed to increase mpg, or try to find an aftermarket over drive unit for it.

My brother was an awesome mechanic. There wasn't anything he couldn't fix. ''Except CANCER''. After paying of my kid's schooling I saved up for a project just like that. He pick up a 69 Chevy 4x4 that needed A LOT of work, about a year before he found out. I'm good with paint and small details and like I said there wasn't a thing he couldn't make run. This truck was going to built in memory of our Dad. To make a long story short I wound up selling the truck, my 48 Fleetmaster and just about anything that wasn't nailed down to help cover the bills for his treatment. I watched a 270 pound biker looking dude melt down to around 150lbs. at the end. I didn't recognize the person he became .For me I love old cars especially old pickup trucks. Love the truck and have a '87 TBI Chevy that is solid and reliable. My biggest beef with this video is the constant stating that GM "gave" the ZZ6 crate motor to TFL. Was it "given" or "sent" (with TFL paying)? Past videos allude to TFL paid for it but this video alludes to it being given. A bit misleading and needs clarification.

They've said multiple times from the beginning that Chevy gave it to them. Especially in the videos where the motor was being installed because of how grateful they were. The only time they've ever mentioned price was in videos talking about how much money the upgrades on the truck are worth.

I own a 78 Suburban! The body style was innovative at the time and continues to be a much sought after body. Mine originally came with a big block 400 and someone changed it to a small block 400 which had much less torque and ability. I will be restoring that big block performance and the 400 series transmission with the transfer case has been up to any job that I have needed. I have pulled trailers, other vehicles out of ditches and such with it. The one draw back I have seen with it is the shift on the fly transfer case. The person who owned it before me changed the auto locking axles to selectable lockers and that has solved the problem many people had with the first generation auto lockers freezing up and causing problems. Overall it has been a wonderful vehicle and I will gladly resto-mod it. I just have to do it on a VA disability budget which is not very much money.

Daniel Sanchez 10 bolt rear axles have small ring and pinions and weak tubes for a full size truck. If you treat it like a car and never tow or haul anything heavy or don’t have a powerful engine you’ll be fine. Guys that use their trucks hard usually end up swapping the 6 lug semi-float 14 bolt axle because the ring and pinion are much stronger and the axle tubes are thicker.

The dozer blade attachment was a neat part of the advertisement. Best trucks ever made, problems and all. Maybe you weren't aware of all the options, but there are some obscure ones that were not mentioned. In '79-81 GM offered an Olds 350 converted to a diesel. It was far from a success, and the 6.2L replaced it in '82. There were two different three speed automatic transmission options - the Turbo Hydromatic 350, and also for heavy duty applications, the TH400. One transmission a lot of folks don't recognize is the New Process A833 MM7/MY6 option code. This was a reconfigured version of the big block Chrysler 4 speed that both Dodge and GM ran in full size trucks and vans. It had very similar gear ratios as the 700R4 four speed automatic. Also, in 1991, GM introduced the 4L80E 4 speed automatic. It was heavily based on the TH400, since that was such a robust success. Who hadn't dreamed of having overdrive on their turbo 400!? I'm not sure if you were strictly speaking of K10's, but the 454 was optional in the C10 in the late 70's and possibly '80. If I remember correctly, this was marketed as a Big 10. Also worth noting is the switch from carburetion to Throttle Body Fuel Injection. First introduced in 1985 on the 350, then in 86 on the 305 and 4.3L. I can't remember what year the 454 got TBI, but it happened during the square body V/R generation - maybe 1989 or 90? There you go - more things to verify and add to your next video! It would be cool to do a "rare option codes" video for the squares, like dealer installed air conditioning. That's a strange one, but it was a thing!

I would love to see a movement to push the big 3 truck manufacturers to recreate retro trucks, as they are doing with cars... but, what so many people would love to see, is Chevy could go back to the square body. The biggest bonus for all, could be a simple reliable good mpg/emissions engine, simple systems that harken back to the 70's, and comfort and ride of today. It would be awesome to choose between IFS or solid front axle. All for maybe $20k for a basic 1/2 ton truck, add $5k for 4wd, $30k for 3/4 ton, and $40k for 1 ton. Keep making the trucks of today for those that want them, but give us what very many people want - old truck style, real truck style... when trucks were for getting dirty.
