Sydneysider here. Bondi is a historic beach because it is close to the city, but locals will tell you that Manly Beach is much better. If you go to Manly Beach take the SLOW ferry to Manly (30 minutes) and spend a day to 1/2 a day at Manly. Make sure to have lunch at the Manly Skiff Sailing Club, they have great views of the Harbour.

If you get a chance make sure you go to the Glebe Markets in Glebe on Saturday just down by Broadway at the beginning of the CBD, this is one of the best markets in Sydney by my reckoning it has that bohemian or hippie feeling about it plus sometimes they have live music. Is Bondi Beach worth the hype ? I guess that depends on what you are looking for. It is not the Miami of Australia it is the Bondi of Australia it is not a copy of anywhere in the world Bondi has its own personality. Millions of tourists love Bondi as do many Aussies but there are also those who prefer other beaches so for them maybe its not worth the hype. I'd suggest that tourists should take the ferry to Manly, rather than the bus to Bondi. Firstly, it gives them a chance to experience a ferry, rather than a bus - which they can probably experience in their own home. The ferry gives lots of views of the harbourside suburbs and into the bays, views which no bus ride can give and a experience different to that which they could have elsewhere. And thirdly, we think that Manly is the better beach for those wanting a surf.
