I have been juicing greens and other veggies for myself for years as a nutritional supplement on top of my usual pretty healthy diet. Just a shot of juice in the morning minimum. I used to compost the pulp and use it for gardening, but since there is obviously still a significant amount of phytonutrients left in the pulp, I started to mix it into my pups raw food diet. I know dogs don't really need too much bulk in their stool, but being the opportunistic omnivores that they are, there seems to be no issue with the added fiber. As a matter of fact, when she is devouring a bone such as a lamb shank, the pulp is great at preventing blockage. Nobody likes to digitally unplug their dog if you know what I mean.

I have a couple of questions if you don't mind and have the time to answer. I once read that the head of the broccoli had something that wasn't beneficial to dogs but the stalk was wonderful for them so I always give my dog the stalks and we eat the heads. Does that sound correct to you? The other question is about fermenting the cabbage. I understand that fermented foods are full of natural probiotics and are very beneficial to dogs and have always wanted to prepare cabbage in that manner but have always been concerned about the salt that it used in the process. If you have any thoughts I'd very much appreciate hearing them. Thank you for sharing so much wonderful information and helping so many dogs
@DogsNaturallyMagazineDNM2 жыл бұрын
Truth be told, I'm not a fan of too many fermented foods in the diet, although some is certainly fine. The value of the gut bacteria is that they literally ferment food for your dog - which makes fermented foods perhaps unnecessary. The other issue with fermented food is that it can be high in histamines, which can cause itchiness, so not all dogs can tolerate fermented foods. If you're worried about salt and want your dog to have fermented food, try some nice kombucha, kefir made with goat milk or a water kefir. And, yes, the stems offer the same health benefits as broccoli heads, just less vitamin A I believe. Good questions, thanks!
@qwertykotchka3942 жыл бұрын
@@DogsNaturallyMagazineDNM Thank you SO much for taking the time to answer. I used to give the water kefir grains to my dog on occasion as so many people do but was concerned as to whether the benefits would outweigh the fact that there is so much sugar (even after 2 days fermenting it still tastes sweet). Delighted to find someone who actually knows what they are talking about recommend it.

my dog always picks out the broccoli or any veges . No matter what and my dog has been battling chronic skin infections. Our vets r not any help just keep giving her antibiotics, medicated baths and sprays. She is on a special diet but she still has breakouts. Over the years I have made her stews with veges not fully cooked as that is they way I eat mine but she will not eat them. I feel so bad for my girl. She is 12. Never had any allergies until she was 11 yrs old. Healthy all the time but the last year has been very expensive and disappointing. Again our vets r not into patient teaching and recommendations except for the medications. Sniff. Love the info on the video as I totally agree with all

My puppy would eat a little broccoli when he was younger, now he turns his nose up at it. He loves carrots and courgettes. Has far as I am aware, broccoli is high in histamine and histamine intolerance can be a cause of inflammation. I've had to put myself on low histamine menu's and take anti-histamines to reduce the overload due a serious allergic reaction. Also if people are having any oral issues they should avoid cauliflower and broccoli.
@DogsNaturallyMagazineDNM2 жыл бұрын

Broccoli is a low histamine food - unless it's fermented.
@eliakimjosephsophia45422 жыл бұрын
@@DogsNaturallyMagazineDNM There is some disagreement amongst the scientific community about what is high histamine and what is low histamine. One of the histamine intolerance specialists that I was listening too mentioned that broccoli is high histamine and so is pineapple that also surprised me. Although the doctors agree that a lot more research has to be done on histamine and food. Vegetables certainly were a factor in my histamine overload.

Sprouts are more digestible than mature plants so you shouldn't need to puree them. To get the most sulforaphane out of them, lightly mince them with a knife or puree them quickly about 5 minutes before serving.

Yes, we suggest if you want to cook broccoli, steam it lightly for no more than 3 minutes at 158 F or less. This will keep most of the nutrients intact.

@DogsNaturallyMagazineDNM Жыл бұрын
If it’s the first time you’ve fed your dog broccoli, start slow … begin with 1 tsp for a small dog and 1 tbsp for a large dog. Give it to him as a treat or add a small amount to his dish. Watch how he reacts. If he doesn’t get any digestive upset you can add a bit more next time. But remember broccoli (and other vegetables) shouldn’t make up more than 10% of your dog’s diet. And because sprouts are so nutrient-dense, keep them under 5%.
