In the game of football, context is everything. When you’re deciding if it was a good decision or a poor one, or you’re trying to sort out the elite from the good or the good from the bad, context is the main factor. It’s the major thing that separates your understanding of how a game really went.
For some players, like Carson Wentz on the Colts, context is critical. To end the year, the Colts were on a three-game winning streak and were sitting at 9-6. They then played their final two games against the Raiders and the Jaguars. If they won either, they likely would have made the playoffs. However, they lost both and consequently went home.
Since these games happened, a lot has changed in Indianapolis. Carson Wentz was traded to Washington, and the Colts traded for Matt Ryan. In this video, I wanted to look at the final two games for Carson Wentz. Was he to blame for their struggles? Or were there other factors involved and Carson Wentz is actually being unfairly criticized for what happened?

I will tell you what Wentz's biggest issue really is... Pocket awareness... He will hold on to the ball too long when a QB like Brady knows to throw it short or away. He takes forever to make a decision too. Elite QB's make quick smart throws and know their surroundings. A QB coach needs to work on this big time with him. I think part of that issue is reading the defense too... If they are in a dime guess what??? Maybe you should know you can hold it longer... If they are blitzing maybe just maybe that should give you the idea that maybe i need to make a quick decision??? Wentz has a great arm, but he takes too long to release...

Good breakdown. One thing worth pointing out is that the colts play calling was so conservative BECAUSE of Wentz. He threw one too many shovel/lefthanded pass INTs for the coaching staff to trust him. I think that's a big part of why they melted down in the last 2 games. Because every defense knew the Colts were trying to hide Wentz rather than rely on him.

Eagles and Colts both understand who and what Wentz is. Stat people look at Wentz Vs Rivers in Indy. Wentz in his prime and Rivers on the verge of retirement. Both players virtually had the same offense and River s played one less regular season game. Rivers had nearly 1k more yards passing and made the playoffs. Wentz had one receiver with over 500 yards receiving. Rivers had 5 players over 500 yards .

It’s too easy to blame Wentz. Regardless of how well he played. His stats show that he had a great season. People expected way too much from him. He has one bad season, and apparently people say he’s a terrible QB. The last two games had bad defensive play on the colts part. And the play calling of the coach. If Rivers was still with the colts, and had a 9-8 season, the blame wouldn’t be on Rivers. Like I said, people are gonna blame Wentz when he even makes minor mistakes. People like to blame him bc it’s what majority of the people say and what they want to hear.

If the Colts' O-Line doesn't come together, it will be a long season them. Last year their left tackle was pathetic, and it cost them dearly. As a result, Carson Wentz got blamed for a lot of crap that wasn't his fault. Further, he came into camp with TWO ankle sprains, but played thru it. That had to impact his stats.... The conservative playcalling can be chalked up to Wentz having issues maintaining his accuracy and his inability to quickly read defenses and pivot to 2nd and 3rd options on plays consistently. Once defenses realized that he was force feeding Michael Pittman Jr, who was the primary wideout with the frame and length to snatch Wentz's often late or inaccurate passes, the passing game started stalling by around the buffalo game. For a while it wasn't mattering because the colts were either blowing out the godawful texans, or the defense and special teams were generating a lot of big plays/turnovers. But Reich had clearly given up on any idea of Wentz being able to carry and push the offense well before these last two games. If you really want to break down how detrimental the staff, the very staff that pushed hard to get Wentz in the first place, viewed their quarterback, just look at the patriots game film. That will tell you far more than just the last two games. The colts won 27-17, with their quarterback completing 5 of 12 passes for 57 yards, one touchdown, and one int. They asked Wentz to do the bare minimum to win a game in which their defense and special teams were causing turnover after turnover and setting the offense up for easy success, and Wentz nearly tanked that game away with a really high percentage of awful throws.
@jeffvance5290
@jeffvance5290 2 жыл бұрын
Talk about scapegoating lmao. First off you are severely overhyping that roster. His targets and pass blocking unit were both low tier. The defense was below average with that horrific air defense. The play calling is only setting Wentz up for failure. Also there were multiple 3rd down drops in that Jags game not shown in this somewhat unfair evaluation that heavily focused on negatives. Wentz is far from a great QB, but you scapegoating him acting like INDY wasn’t a bad situation is laughably biased.

Kurt Warner brokedown Carson Wentz and has been critical of his situation for the last couple of years. He's been fair and accurate, without bias. He also publicly stated that he would help any NFL QB that asked...Wentz called him and has been getting private coaching from Kurt Warner. Wentz doesn't seem to be uncoachable, nor much of any other than humble and dedicated to getting better. That type of attitude brings a good chance for success. Probably playing with the best WRs he's ever had and there's 4 of them in WSH. I wouldn't bet against him.

You complain about the conservative play calling, but I would argue the conservative play calling was because they didn't trust Wentz. It's also why Taylor got so many carries all year, you can't convince me that Reich wanted JT to carry the ball that much. As a Colts fan, I was done with him somewhere between week 10-12. Everyone focuses on these games, but the damage was done before that. He had the exact same WR/RB/TE and 4/5 OL that Phillip Rivers did. Rivers couldn't throw beyond 25 yards hardly, and was a statue behind the line. But I would contend the Colts would have been better last year with him at QB. The decision making was horrible all year. Our best offense 2 or 3 games was Wentz ignoring the underneath routes, throwing passes short of the WR on deep routes. The WR would fight to get back to the ball and the CB would interfere. It's literally why they won 2 games I can think of. But it was a bad throw, and bad decision that got bailed out by the DB/ref. He killed drives all year ignoring easy 5 yard plays.

How about the Ravens game earlier in the year where Wentz totally played well enough to win even putting the winning FG on his kicker's foot after that kicker had already missed two kicks in the game? That alone should've made the Colts 10-7. There are other obvious things I could point out as well like Wentz not having a 1WR for twelve weeks of the season with Parris Campbell out.People try to call Pittman a 1WR but he's not.Pittman is an effective high traffic receiver but not a zip route WR.Plus for the Colts first 4or 5 games last year their Oline was missing key guys and they had to play away against great QB/WR teams which the Colts showed they couldn't stop defensively.

The breakdown of the last two games is fair and I appreciate you putting yourself out there. However, when you admit he was pressured 52% of the time it's hard to place too much blame on him for a bad game. Also, there were 14 other games, including several losses that Carson played very well in. Overall he was only responsible for 12 TOs (7 int and 5 lost fumbles). And he was middle of he pack for starters in terms of sacks. People want to just focus on those 2 last games - well the entire team played like garbage both games while Carson was largely responsible for them even being in that position to begin with. As for characterizing the trade as desperation, that is a media narrative that is just not true IMO. They had a list of desired outcomes. This was the best scenario after Wilson and Rogers were off the board. The draft picks are a non-issue for me and to be fair they got them back in the draft. Would like to have seen them get Indy to take some of that CAP but it's not debilitating and unlike you I do not see it having much if any impact on FA sending. They could have restructured him and others if they really wanted CAP. Ron R has never been a big spender in free agency. The trade did not change that. Wentz is never going to be the guy who when the entire team is playing like garbage he will rise up like superman and win the game for you. But there are very few players like that in history. Carson makes the team better, and potentially much much better. High ceiling, low floor and an easy out after 1 season without losing any 1st or 2nds so you can be active in the 2023 draft for a QB. Few trades are perfect. But this was a good move by the team and again I do NOT see it as desperation at all.

As a Colts fan I was excited when we got him. As the year went on it was clear he wasn't going to cut it. Everyone focuses on the Raiders/Jags games, but I was done with him weeks before that. I was watching guys run wide open it felt like all year underneath and he chucked it downfield constantly anyway. Our best offense for 3-4 games at one point was him throwing 40 yard passes to receivers 50 yards down the field. When they came back to the ball the DB grabbed them and it was pass interference. He kills drives by not just making the simple plays. People without context will never understand that. People complain about the OL/WR or whatever, but 40 year old Phillip Rivers had the exact same team and did more because he got rid of the ball to the right places and on time.

@@showtimetrey6458 you sound like me last year as a Colts fan. And I think you're looking at things in the wrong direction. QBs make WRs better. WRs don't make QBs. Who was Cooper Kupp before Stafford? Not the Offensive Player of the Year, that's for sure. Megatron left Stafford in Detroit, but it never affected Staffords numbers. It just never affects good QBs that way. Look at Randy Moss. You can directly follow his QBs with his numbers. Culpepper to Kerry Collins, to Brady. Moss numbers suffered with Collins, but Collins literally kept his career averages, no difference. Moss didn't help him. Good to great WRs will make a play the average WR won't make what ... 2 plays a game? Maybe? The QB is EVERY SINGLE play, audibles, run directions, who he throws to. The QB makes so many important decisions they're the single biggest factor in their own success. **Edit** .... another example, look at Jared Goff from the Rams to Detroit in the same trade. He threw less passes so he had less yards, but there isn't any major statistical difference between his performance in the downgrade. He played like Jared Goff of the Rams. He didn't get statistically worse because of the worse talent around him. 🤷‍♂

the reason why the colts ran the ball as if they had a lead in the last two games is because carson simply couldn’t win games throwing the ball. granted the offensive line was very inconsistent and injured throughout the season. but everytime the colts placed the game in carson’s hands he somehow threw it away. ravens, bucs, titans, rams, etc. that’s why you saw in games like bills and patriots were strictly running. i supported carson a lot during the season but he simply has a hard time taking checkdowns, throws inaccurate balls (the amount of overthrows i saw was horrifying), and cannot throw the ball away. he does make unbelievable plays at times but that’s the most he’s gonna bring to the table unless he matures as a QB.

I think Wentz is gonna ball out, we saw an MVP caliber season when he just had good pass pro, and good TE play with no real quality WRs, Alshon Jeffrey being well into his decline, and Agholor who just isn't very good. In Washington, he will have very close to the level of Pass Pro he had in 2017 plus a rounded and stacked group of pass catchers unlike he's ever seen, a group that can honestly be one of the best receiving units in football with Wentz at QB. McLaurin who has hovered around Elite level play through his 1st 3 seasons even with a revolving door of 8 B to C-Tier QBs, Curtis Samuel who has a Deebo Samuel type skill set, with more speed. Samuel is on par or better than any top WR Wentz has had, and he'll be Wentz's 2nd or 3rd option. Rookie, 1st round pick Jahan Dotson that is developing great chemistry with Wentz in OTAs and has big time potential, especially as a 2nd option or slot. Dyami Brown had his rookie season crushed by Heinicke's noodle arm, but just so happens to be a deep route specialist Tailor-Made for Carson's play style, Not to mention Cam Sims and Dax Milne who are on par or better than any WR2 Wentz as had while they are coming of the bench as his 5th, 6th option. He will have solid TEs to work with between Bates and Logan when he gets healthy not to mention the group of promising rookies. Add in a solid Run game that just got better by adding a bruising workhorse in Brian Robinson which should free up Gibby to join JD and Curtis Samuel as a great group of pass catchers out of the backfield as well. This offense is gonna shock the league and even a lot of fans with its explosiveness and dominance throughout the season while it carries us to a 13-win season, Division Title, and possibly a surprise NFC Championship Appearance.

For my part, if I saw him try one more left handed flip pass when he was getting tackled I would puke. In short, it's not the last two games you should look at, it's the whole season. I do agree that the raiders game was bad but even Tom Brady gets jumpy when he's consistently pressured. I can tell he missed that wide open wheel route throw because he was anticipating being under pressure and didn't step into his throw. I also feel like the one he play he missed the check down that play is designed for his eyes to start left. The Routes on the left were quicker developing and the ones on the right were later developing. The check down is always the last option so it makes sense that his eyes started left and by time they got to the check down there was already pressure. The problem with people's criticism about wentz isn't that it's not fair it's that you can look at any qb in the league who we consider elite and see alot of the same things wentz does. The Colts were up 19 and 16 points in the 3rd and 4th quarters against the Ravens. In the 4th, Wentz put them in position for FG to extend the lead or win the game, had the first FG blocked, and the GW field goal was missed. In between that, the defense allowed two TD with 2-point conversions to tie the game. D and ST failures. The offense never saw the ball in OT because the defense yielded a 10-play TD drive.

Absolutely - It's a team effort. When you put the finger on one player for losing a game, your an idiot! It starts at the top, the owner is a jerk, totally. Yes it's his team, I just hope the Colts choke with Matt Ryan. He's nothing special, do you see him with a Super Bowl ring. NO. Let's see how many QB's do with a line that fails to protect their QB. Make him run for his life! The team effort sucked in the last three games.

So many Colts fans here just piling on more hate on the guy. He's not the reason you missed out on the playoffs. It also wasn't right how you guys ran him out of town, blaming him when it wasn't warranted, about as low class as you can get. You will see this year, another missed playoff run with an over the hill veteran QB. Instead of scapegoating you could have built upon last season.

For sure there were other factors regarding team effort that contributed to a loss, but Wentz shoulders most of the blame. Bad reads, poor decisions, and turnovers will kill any team.

Maybe the next video can be on why teammates always seem to dislike wentz because the colts say even if they made the playoffs they still would’ve moved off which just blows my mind

Ok here is why you're wrong. The colts called basic plays because wentz was never accurate or made the smart choices in games and he cost us games in big moments. He wasn't reliable. The colts o line had got covid before the last 2 games and covid affected them still. Fisher was an ass LT, should had never been signed which is why he's still unsigned today. Wentz underthrew and overthrew wide recievers. Wentz threw to guys in triple coverage instead of guys wide open. Wentz only cares about the big plays as compare to checkdowns. Im surprised you never brought up any the game film he had jt or 2 other colts wide open for possible 1st downs and instead he tossed it downfield in triple coverage. His accuracy and vision is bad, he holds onto the ball too long. Colts defense play uninspired football in last 2 games. And Washington it doesn't matter who you have at WRs, wentz missed multiple open WRs in multiple games. He had a few great games but he was never consistent enough. If he was a franchise QB, then colts would be in playoffs now.

Ah yes. I remember when our fans made excuses for Carson Wentz too. You want to talk about context?? Try watching Wentz play during an ideal situation. Where he holds on to the ball, sinking our pass protection rating. Or throwing the ball with poor accuracy from all ranges. Wentz ain't it, sir.
