If you have been following this channel for some time, you’ll know that I have been a huge fan of Russell Wilson. He’s a player that I’ve always liked simply because of his playstyle. For every bad throw or bad decision he made, Wilson would more than make up for that by using his arm or legs. Routinely Wilson would avoid a sack and then he would throw an amazing pass down the sideline. This play style was both frustrating to watch, but at the same time extremely exhilarating when Wilson was on fire. It became so routine that at a certain point, you just expected this to be how he played throughout the rest of his career. Well, that theory is being put into test this season with the Broncos. Now that we’ve entered his 11th season in the NFL, things seem to be falling apart. In this video, I wanted to see why that was the case and what’s happening with Russell Wilson in Denver.

People talk like his height is a personal failing of his. He has no control over that. He could see short routes if he had adequate protection. The Seahawks knew he was undersized when they drafted him yet never put him into position to see short routes by DRAFTING elite O-Linemen. No, instead he got Mike Upati, George Fant (a concerted basketball player/project) and Germaine Ifedi!!!! 😡 Russ leaves and, to save his own a$$, Pete finally listens to his shots and drafts the nation’s top O-Lineman to protect Geno, who is still a second-tier WB despite looking better this year than anyone expected. What a middle finger! That is worse than the middle finger ET gave Pete Carroll in 2018. People need to quit talking about Russ’s height. If height was a determining factor in QB greatness, Fran Tarkington, Sonny Jurgenson and Drew Brees wouldn’t have become HoF QBs, and Doug Flutie would have been sacked a lot more than he was. Aaaah. The difference between Flutie and Russ, besides Russ’s superior talent? Flutie’s coaches understood that they couldn’t park him behind garbage and expect him to perform. Get off of Russ’s height! He has the skills to make ANY pass, but his coach and GM have to get him a strong O-Line. He can hit people across the middle.

Born and raised Seattle local, I can tell you it's one simple thing: his legs. Russell Wilson was never a top end burner, but he was very quick and slippery in tight spaces. In the 2016 season, he suffered a bad ankle sprain and an MCL sprain early in the season (different legs). For anyone who wasn't blinded by his growing highlight reel, he was slower after those injuries occurred. Not dramatically slower, but slower enough to be noticeable, to my eye. Still he was quick, and his passing game really developed. He was a great pre-snap read QB. However, in the past 3-4 seasons our success in Seattle started dropping off and our frustrations grew. Russ began to slow down a lot more (and got noticeably fatter). 2020 is when everyone really noticed and yet sports commentators, Seattle fans, and football fans would all continue to say Wilson needed to get back to running around more, even as we all acknowledged that he just didn't have the wheels anymore. Reality check - he's going to be 34 soon. For what his style of play requires of him, he's slow. He's got enough legs left to roll out of the pocket to make certain throws, but not as consistently as he used to. Escaping a broken/collapsing pocket is pretty much a thing of the past. Where he used to be able to react to a collapsed pocket, he now has to feel a collapsing pocket and bail out just a little bit sooner. Wilson's legs facilitated EVERYTHING about his game. His legs allowed him to be deadly as a runner and as a passer. I think he can still be a top 12 QB for 3 more seasons. Denver is having to overpay massively for that, but their offense will be better next year. They need to improve their receivers, and they really need a good RB. If they can somehow keep that defense together despite Wilson's contract, they can be contenders. I think if Wilson could put his ego aside and restructure his contract to pay him substantially less (do the Brady thing), they'd be in a position to build a great team. He won't do that, though. More so than losing his legs, I think what appears to be an inflated ego is ultimately Wilson's undoing.

Also worth pointing out that players like Brady or Brees are exceptions, many qb have fallen off in mid thirties. Wilson's game relied more on his physical tools than others, so like you say he fell off sooner. That happened to McNabb and Vick too. Wilson in his prime was elite despite his limitations, and he had a great run in the nfl. Seahawks got a steal where they drafted him, and again when they my moved him to Denver lol. Probably up there all time in terms of net value given to Seattle as a franchise, and he himself has a ring. Good deal for all involved. Other than the Broncos, who are hosed.

For years we watched offensive ineptitude for 3 quarters followed by light bulbs suddenly switching on and 4th-quarter heroic comebacks. We gave Russ the benefit of doubt and figured it was the coaching and game plan holding him back until they had no choice but to turn him loose late in the game. That's where the whole "Let Russ Cook" movement came from. We wanted them to play like that the whole game, not just in the 4th quarter! Today I still can't quite explain the Jekyll and Hyde offense we endured every week, but watching nearly all of our offensive problems move with him over to Denver while Geno is thriving by doing what he's told (and doing it well) is pretty convincing to me that Russ was actually holding himself back. And still is. I feel bad for him. He thought the grass would be greener in Denver but is now learning the hard way that he was actually taking a good situation for granted in Seattle. Even with that truckload of money and beautiful family he has, he must be absolutely frustrated and miserable about his professional situation, public image, and legacy. But in the end he's a victim of his own choices, nobody else's.

I think he really needs guys like Tate, Baldwin, and Lockett to be successful - guys who will get open on the scramble drill. Wilson is one of the best at "throwing people open" by using open space, but that only works if you have receivers who understand where open space is when the route breaks down. Without them, his scramble is less effective because DBs can attack the LOS more readily when he's out of the pocket, further limiting his (fading) potential with his legs.

Sam, you didn't say anything about his mobility. In recent years he's clearly gotten stockier and slower. I don't know if that's just aging or if it has to do with training and conditioning. But without the scrambling ability he's relied more and more on a run game. And Denver's run game this year has been atrocious. I 100 percent agree. IMO, I believe it’s a result of a few factors. First Russ want to win a mvp, he has made that obvious. Second whenever a QB makes a big throw, the whole league goes crazy. In Russ’s mind, he thinks if he makes a lot of big throws he would win MVP and get a lot of fame and respect. He also thinks, only throwing big passes will increase the chance those big passes are completed, completing more big passes will get more positive attention from the media, the more media attention will give him better MVP odds. That’s why I think he only throws deep balls
@tomdb2
@tomdb2 Жыл бұрын
@@Michael-uu7zq I think it's also something he got used to having to do because the offense sucked so bad, both schematically and by personnel. People forget that in the early years nearly all his receivers were late round or UFAs because Pete just wanted to run and play great D and that's where the resources went. Then after Beast Mode left town, they had a revolving door of RBs who couldn't stay healthy. We're only 4 years removed from the season in which he set an NFL record by accounting for 97% of the team's offense. And this revisionist history we're hearing now about how the offensive line was actually not so bad, and all the sacks were Wilson's fault? Really?

You make excellent points, Samuel. I agree the entire offense bears some responsibility, but I also think those contributing aspects are symptoms, and not the cause(s) of a stuttering offense. I think a huge cause is the “communication” angle, because the lack of it seems to be affecting the timing, trust, and chemistry on the offensive side of the ball. At the beginning of the season, much ado was made that Denver would run the offense designed and desired by Wilson, giving him a lot of control. Seems to be tension between Hackett’s communication and Wilson’s communication. I think Denver needs to examine who is actually in charge of the offense, and if it’s not the head coach, should probably revisit their pre-season approach.

That coupled with missing the short receivers is basically giving defenses everything they need to counter. Daring a quarterback to beat them with TECMO bowl plays coming into a system where the QB/WR trust isn't there (and may never be), is not a recipe for success. My wife brought up an interesting point too, seeing as she lived in the Denver area for a long time: You can't really come into Denver with a superstar attitude and not completely ball out, because Broncos fans are absolutely BRUTAL (her words, not mine). So if you need a fan base to adore you to feel confident, then this doesn't bode well. Of course it isn't all his fault, the offense there has issues from top to bottom, but it is what it is.

Just watched the 2020 game against the Patriots. You can see in it Russ hits all kinds of reads - short, intermediate, and deep. He scanned the field thoroughly and made the right read. A few times he got sacked and that might be him misreading the stunts - but they were sparing. He looked like a complete QB that game. What is so wrong about now? TL;DR: Russ is capable, he just needs the right relationships with the player and chemistry and needs the right headspace to play like his old self. I think it’s due to chemistry and rhythm. Russ got into a good rhythm early in the game and he complete quick passes on a timely schedule. Each play he got it out in 2-3 seconds. He even checked all his reads through it. Once he got through the first set of plays, he looked comfortable and continued to play like that all game long. However, this rhythm can only be achieved if there’s chemistry. Getting out the correct quick, short passes require chemistry and knowing where each others’ feels are. This requires a lot of practice. I feel like the Broncos need this first year to get comfortable with each other. Now, the reads are off. Russ isn’t going through all of them in a timely manner. Sometimes he’s too quick, sometimes he takes too long, and sometimes he flat out ignores them. I don’t know if it is because he thinks it’s because his past receivers will be in a certain spot because of habit, or it’s because of trust issues, or if it’s because of personal issues that are clouding his mind. Referring to @SamuelGoldNFL’s reply to one comment below, Russ is playing in an offense similar to one he’s played in before - Schottenheimer’s. This is the same one that played against the Patriots. Russ can find the right read, Russ can play in a short, quick game offense, Russ can be a great, capable QB. He just needs the right relationships and mindset. Both of which are lacking right now.

RW3 is getting hit too often again. Quote 'it can't get any worse" it will because we have seen a drift away from the HC play scheme to a RW3 scheme. The short gain and percentage plays to the big long plays. RW3 is going to have a very bad game soon unless a scheme is found that works. I too have watched RW3 all his career and love watching him play. He did himself no favors with the way he landed in Denver and left himself open to critics. I also think that the HC will be gone if they lose to the raiders. HC has had more than the time reqd to fix issues and nothing tangible has worked. Thank God for the defense.

Does it make sense to call that play? I’m sure russ would say “hey why we calling that play?” Shoot I don’t know what it is. But what really kills me is why tf they still got Gordon with the ball? After seeing Wilson for the second time yesterday I don’t think Russ is the problem honestly. Yes he has regressed but He can be successful in the right offense. The play calling is horrible and every route is designed to get 15+ yards. The best offenses in the NFL have patience unlike the Broncos. It doesn’t make it better that Russ can’t see over the Injured O-Line either. Also If Sean Payton comes back to the NFL next season the Cardinals should hire him and trade for Russ. Cardinals are the perfect team for him with the weapons they have. They could even trade K1 for more assets.

Russell WIlson was coddled in seattle, even after the superbowl interception he was coddled and that pissed off a lot of the team because Pete's mantra was always compete and hold yourself accountable to improve. Instead Wilson deluded himself that he was some mahomes-esque level qb that needed to be allowed to cook, when he wasn't cerebral enough for that. His best weapon was his legs allowing him to scramble and open up the street ball big plays. His legs are slowing down, they aren't miserable yet, but not good enough to punish well disciplined and faster DEs. He's never been good with progressions and his ability to scramble is fading, this is exactly what you'd expect to happen knowing that. As far as the accuracy and stuff, that can also be in his head as he deals with the realization that he isn't an elite level qb and that he got keyser soze'd the whole time.

Pressure? look up the stats of how long Russ holds the ball, he is 5th in holding the ball the longest, and then look up on how quickly Denver's patch work offensive line gives up pressure, they are ranked middle of the pack. Holding the ball too long can cause pressure too. Russ is part of the problem why? Because he doesn't wanna move in the pocket anymore, he wants to play like Peyton Manning/Tom Brady, but he can't read the field quickly, Seattle fan would tell you that. If he isn't willing to use his feet anymore, he isn't the old Russ anymore, and if your saying Hackett needs to plan plays where he uses his feet? Its not Hackett that isn't doing that, its Russ, Russ wants to play like Manning and Brady, he doesn't want to play like what made him a HoF QB. Right now the Broncos are letting Russ choose his offense, what they need to do is take that away from him, and make Russ play the system that makes Russ good, because Russ is not Tom Brady or Peyton Manning and can not be a pocket passer. No more letting Russ Cook, he can't cook, and he was always a system QB.

He thinks hes smarter than the coaches so he asked for more power, then more power, then he refused to do things the coaches wanted to do, so he lost his coach. Now Russ is with a rookie coach that has zero history with Russ and knows none of his weaknesses or strengths and they are somehow "partners," according to Russ. Broncos fans already blaming only Hackett. Hackett cant even coach the team how he wants to cuz hes gotta ok it with one player first! Definitely too much power for a qb that doesn't have the size or skill to have that power! He did Seahawks players, coaches, and fans dirty as fuck, and wonders why he got booed.
