Scrapie comes from farm-raised sheep feed with animal by-products (food containing animal protein), Mad cow disease comes from farm-raised cows, feed with animal by-products (food containing animal protein). There are more and more farms in North America raising white-tailed deer and feeding them questionable food (probably containing animal protein). The three diseases (Scrapie, MCD & CWD) are modified infective proteins called prions. More research is urgently needed into deer farming practices. I am a wildlife vet by the way.
@xrpfreak78812 жыл бұрын
I have a theory that nature has built in check mechanisms. This disease originated in farm raised deer, cramped in to tight unnatural areas. Nature sees this as an overabundance of deer in a specific area and the disease kicks in from the transfer of body fluids from within the enclosed deer. The population then collapses bringing deer levels back to appropriate levels for the land. In the wild this would be natures way of a population control. This is my own theory. I have no evidence for it.
@Eric-dr5bj2 жыл бұрын
How was the spread of mad cow stopped? If I remember it was mass slaughter of entire herds and change in the feeding practices. Something similar would have to take place to slow CWD spread
@manuelwebe2 жыл бұрын
@@Eric-dr5bj Yes, MCD was stopped with the mass slaughter of cows. That would be next to impossible to do with CWD in deer as there are at least three species of deer involved (white-tailed. mule deer and elk) in many of the lower 48 states and some Canadian provinces. Controlling overpopulation, however (as Doug is trying to do in this video) is a good management practice as the disease is clearly density-dependent.
@colbykinney56332 жыл бұрын
pretty sure the first record of CWD was from a whitetail in a pen with sheep. CWD is probably either a mutation of Scrapie or could be the same thing just a lack of genetic testing to confirm.

The herd is obviously flourishing despite CWD, it doesn't infect humans, and we'll never be able to eradicate it. How has anyone's hunting experience been improved due to the DNRs research of CWD?? All of that money should be redirected to acquisition of public land and habitat improvement on those lands. Something tangible to hunters for all our tax dollars.

The only thing people have seen is a decrease in the number of deer, including trophy bucks. It has been around for decades, why do we now try to control mother nature? Furthermore, if people are concerned about it instead of shooting everything, quit corning in the summer and planting food plots to congregate deer.

I hunt down the road from Doug & shot 2 deer last rifle season. A local processor charged $120/ deer for the basic cutting & wrapping. They will cut up your deer almost immediately but not make any sausage until you contact them letting them know your deer was “CWD not detected”. All that was required from me was a phone call to the processor letting them know my CWD results from the WI DNR. The WI DNR took almost a month to get my results back. The testing location told me it usually takes 1 week. The testing process needs to be sped up. If CWD was detected, you’re still on the hook for $120/ deer & you can tell the processor to throw out your meat or you’ll pick it up. It’s up to you if you want to eat it or not. It’s a lot of money that could be wasted. I need to learn how to process my own. CWD was not detected in mine-thankfully. I could have been out $240 if they were positive & if I was following the CDC guidelines. The processor I used waited until all deer came in after rifle season w/ CWD not detected results & then batch ground sausage starting in January. That was my experience. There are many opinions on this subject on how things are done…
@ColoradoStreaming2 жыл бұрын
Colorado will refund your processing costs up to $200 I think if your deer tests positive for CWD in a mandatory CWD testing unit. Supposedly its very hard to clean any tools that have been in contact with the Prions and you basically need to hard soak everything in bleach.

@captmiker74232 жыл бұрын
During the WI 9 day gun deer season I took my deer to a local store that is a designated registration station & CWD sampling station. Checking in our deer at a station is tradition for us, not just phoning them in. These stations can be found on the WI DNR website or Google WI CWD sampling stations. They had iPads for registration & trained CWD sampling workers. Some are biologists. All they did was cut out the lymph nodes. They did not remove the heads. They also checked teeth for age. My deer were a 3 & 4 year old. I didn’t have them caped for mounting but did overhear the CWD sampler say he could extract the lymph nodes a cleaner way if you were planning to have it caped & mounted. I do not know if the CWD sampling technicians (biologists) are at the registration stations outside of the 9 day gun deer season. Hope that helps.

Maybe the only way do deal with the issue is eliminate deer farming and reduce feeders. CWD has been around for many decades (maybe longer), and people have been eating meat infected with it for probably just as long. Now you are supposed to just throw out the meat and get another tag if it tests positive? What if that next deer tests for CWD, do you throw out all that meat again and keep trying till you get a clean one? Interesting appoach to conservation, I’ll just eat the meat.

@@slugoo6474 Did you know back in the 90s the United Kingdom had a big problem with mad cow disease, a prion disease similar to CWD. To this day anyone who consumed beef in the UK back then can no longer donate blood. CWD is certainly no small issue. In fact, I have stopped hunting whitetail and mulies because of it. In the early stages of CWD, it may not be detectable in the deer you're eating.

So let me understand this now, Every deer has these Prions within their bodies and it's only a few that have one of them that decides to go crazy and get out of shape. That deer can then pass this to others via body fluids etc. It also stays in the Earth for upnto 4 years now so where that big 10 point falls and dies and Mother Earth reclaims him, eventually Brouse will grow(in infected soil) and Bambi comes along and munches down on (Infected Brouse). So 99.9% of us have killed deer that are infected and never even knew it because 99.9% of us Will Never see a deer in the late stages of it because they are getting killed of by what? Predators, Logging trucks, soccer mons and hunters. So how does the Department of Wildlife And Fisheries of Any state think they can stop it?

So we turn and burn, everything is done before returning to work. Technically if you had the area you could freeze the carcass, but any knife, hook, etc. That touched a CWD positive meat would have to be either tossed or isolated in the future.
