Nearly every DS2 player who has an overly negative opinion of the game. The game has so many problems, but that’s a self inflicted issue. The game punishes that more than the other games and actively rewards taking it slow because it despawns enemies killed 12 times. Clearing out those DLC coop areas was a nightmare but made trying annoying bosses a lot less annoying since I was always ready and not stressed just to get there.

Park has it instilled in her brain that ds2 can't be good, and its honestly not a bad thing. She can be pretty dumb at times with her approaches to the game especially the multiple times shes fallen off a cliff because shes reading chat and still complains. The fact that she has to constantly remind herself to be open minded towards the game but naturally regresses back to the complaining state shows that she is genuinely not enjoying the game and thats okay.

In fact some areas in DS2 have so few enemies that they seem pointless. But people don't know what they're talking about with the problems that DS2 actually has because they just meme it and call it a day. Let me posit YOU a question. What if you engaged with a game based on the mechanics it actually has rather than engage with the game based on the mechanics it doesn't? Which do you think will result in a better time? I wonder.

I always have a soft spot for DS2. You are completely right about how experimental it is, and I really appreciate that about it. For example, I like the idea of enemies despawning. I also like the abundance of NPCs to summon, Lucatiel's story, and the theme of ambitious women who drive kings to ruin. And I loved the feeling of powerstancing great/large clubs and pancaking the enemies. I'll never get the special rings for deathless and no bonfire runs, and I'll never beat Sir Alonne hitless, but I still love it all the same.

Likewise about the rings but dark souls 2 is hands down my favourite game in the series. The human enemy bosses are a good thing in my eyes, the overlapping level design leading to a sense of wonder and faux size. The storyline is awesome, Vendrik being misled into a war just for Nashandra's endless appetite to the dark, the story of the Milfanito. I also unironically prefer the combat in 2. Yes there are problems and I wouldn't say otherwise, but it's still my favourite game in the series.

It always bothers me people don't get this. It's taught early on that you don't want to aggro the whole map. Running away is a last resort. I like this because it's an incentive to methodically explore levels and not just sprint through. To me this game is more chill than DS3 for that reason. You aren't meant to be spam dodging and healing. Just lots of good 1v1 battles

That's just a massive time dump. The levels shouldn't generally force you to have to clear every time, that just becomes tedious as all hell for no reason.

This video gave me ptsd flashbacks of my own time when I forced myself to finish this game. Throughout my entire playthrough I kept saying to myself that it's all going to be worth it and surely the ending will be satisfying despite me having absolutely zero fun so far. Well it wasn't worth it and honestly I just regret putting myself through it. I don't think I would say that Dark Souls 2 is my favorite game in the franchise, objectively saying, DS3 would take that title. But there's something about it that I can't quite explain and it holds a special place in my heart that the others don't. It's the from soft game I have the less hours played, but it's the only one I finished only once, so it's the one I took the longest to finish on my first playthrough. The reason for that is the level design, it's the only from soft game that, in my experience, what killed me over and over again were not the bosses, but the levels. And this made me get a lot of souls from corpse runs and spend it on trying different equipment. Because of that, it was the only from soft game that the rpg elements really flourished to me in the first run, when usually I'm the one who sticks to the first weapon I like using. But replaying those levels the last thing I want so I'll probably never touch the game again

I'm not sure that it is supposed to work that way, but it looks really cool! That was shortly after the enemy glitched out, and wouldn't get back up, even with HP remaining, so your game might have just needed a reset.

DS2 is in such a weird place. I started my souls experience with it, and in some ways it's my favorite of the series. But holy fuck does it have some downsides! ADP is a problem, some of the boss and area designs are too shallow. I feel like it would benefit with less areas and them being more fleshed out? Though, I do like that it's linear, but you can choose different paths. That made it way more replayable than DS3 for me. And playing DS1 after 2 and 3 - I just couldnt get into it. I have played DS2 so much cant seem to enjoy it anymore though, but that took me over 700 hours....

Poor guy, i feel sorry for people who starts with ds2, i started with ds1 and i really loved it the lore, gameplay, world design, bosses (except bed of chaos)... I couldnt feel the same way when starting ds2 as ds1 tutorial was better spent like 5 hours dying then deleted it, didnt have the motivation to finish it like i did with ds1 , next day installed it again, after 15 hours in the game i deleted it again. I couldnt ask for a refund as i bought the game a long time ago sadly

Just so you know ADP is not just for I-frames it also lets you use consumables faster. I don't blame you for quitting when you did. Everyone was talking up the DLC as so amazing and I got to it and was just like wtffff it's literally the worst gank squad situation all over. I hated how every boss was so easy (except for some DLC bosses), but getting to the bosses was out of this world!

The DLC is the best of the game. And most of peoples problem is playing it like fools running by everything, when the mechanics very clearly are designed to force… you know, engaging with the game. It punishes how everyone plays the other Soulslike games by rushing by 99% of it. That’s on you. Vanilla isn’t even bad about that. And other than Smelter Demon run and the Co-Op areas of the DLC, the Scholar version isn’t either really… if you actually play through the game rather than run through it. Game has so many legitimate problems but most people focus on their self inflicted issue of not being able to cheese it by running by easily to magic door

I played DS2 just like you said, didn't act like a fool just running past everything and the ads on the way to the bosses were 10x harder than any boss in the DLC. All this work to get a mess of a boss. Which makes the game not as enjoyable or rewarding as the others. And ya you're right thats not even the worst part about DS2. OP was definitely getting punished for trying to run past everything, but to her credit she was trying to feel out a path for a deathless run. You cannot fight every rank and file enemy and brush past every gank squad if you want to do a deathless run. Its possible, but not feasible.

Oh fun fact about this game. If you look deep into fromsoft lore, the first games they ever created were the kings field series, and shadow tower as well. While miyazaki was clearly innovated with demons souls and dark souls by kings field, shadow tower and shadow tower abyss were both worked on by the main director of Dark souls 2, which is interesting considering the differences of dark souls 2.

Dark Souls 2, while extraordinarily different and definitely considered the black sheep of the soulsborne series, is 100% my personal favorite Dark Souls game. It was my first introduction into the series courtesy of TheMediaCows old DS2 playthrough and from there I was hooked not only onto the Souls series, but RPGs in general. Sure it has many questionable decisions and many aspects of it are less than stellar, but it holds a special place in my heart and I will always consider it one of my favorite games of all time. Besides, the world, RPG elements, and gameplay are all uniquely catered to my individual tastes my pure happenstance

I guess I had never watched a playthrough of Dark Souls 2 by someone who didn't like it, but now having done so, I finally feel like I understand why DS2 gets so much negative feedback. I also wanna comment on that "DS2 players can't explain what's fun about DS2" comment. It seems to me that some people who play Dark Souls 2 aren't actually "playing Dark Souls 2". They are playing the game they want it to be, which is Dark Souls 1 or 3, but Dark Souls 2 is very different from either and should be played differently too. In fact, it sort of forces you to play differently, which seems to be what's frequently interpreted as "bad". An easy example of this was the complaint about levers and doors not having i-frames. Is there a reason why an action like pulling a lever with both hands SHOULD give the player i-frames? Other than "because you got it in Dark Souls 1 and 3"? Is the inability to cheese through areas easily really a bad thing? Dark Souls 2 places a higher expectation on the player in many ways and can be quite challenging because of it. Whereas DS3 and Elden Ring place emphasis on learning enemy attack patterns, DS2 further places great significance on approaching areas and battles strategically, punishing careless presses of buttons. It won't give you quick sips of the flask, you need to earn those. It won't let you mindlessly spend stamina without getting punished for it. It won't easily let you rush through a bunch of enemies and squeeze yourself through boss doors or pull levers. It expects you to actually play the game and have a soul-to-soul with it. And when you do play the game for what it is, it can be a very rewarding experience. The so called 'ganky enemies' that people complain about is actually something I like about the game. The feel of having properly prepared for an area and then slaughtering your way through tons of enemies is a great feeling. I don't find myself getting surrounded very often, probably because I'm dealing with them using area-appropriate weapons. And I don't mean "you need to farm gear and souls until you're over-leveled for the area". The game gives you tons of upgrade materials by playing normally (and besides, I want to keep my soul memory low for PvP). Have a variety of weapons at your disposal that you think are fun and effective, and think of a setup unique to the area you are trying to beat. Don't have the materials or gear you need for that? Go try another area. The game isn't linear. Bonfire warping was introduced in DS2 for this very reason. It rarely forces you to play in specific places. It was rather baffling that the rapier was the only weapon used throughout this run. Not even power-stanced, which is what DS2 is famous for. There are so many fun weapons to keep the experience from going stale. I'm guessing it's because that's the choice of other no-death no-hit type runners, but then the objective isn't really "playing DS2" anymore is it? The objective is "how do I easily cheese through the game". The game also expects the player to be observant of their surroundings through their adventure. Early on in the video, there was a death caused by not paying attention to the ground. This kept happening, over and over. Basically all of the deaths that were labeled "Cat Mario" were easily avoidable by being attentive. Hell, there were some deaths where a leap of faith was taken into the darkness, and even THOSE were called "Cat Mario". Nothing in the game forced her to let go of that ladder. I don't think this is a very fair label to a game that merely expects the player to stay alert of their surroundings while adventuring and avoid mindlessly moving forward. The payoff of actually engaging with the game is very satisfying, seeing your preparations, strategies and practice rewarded with good results. To all who attempt future playthroughs, I encourage you to avoid thinking about this game in the same way that you think about DS1 and DS3. Your approach should be more cautious, like you're playing an atmospheric horror game, prowling through locations both unnerving and beautiful, to become a cunning warrior that can rise above it all. (Also try playing with the mace. It GOOD.) List of things I love about DS2 ATMOSPHERIC ENVIRONMENTS. These locations feel so good to just 'be there', I often replay DS2 just so that I can go back to my favorite locations. Satisfaction of beating areas! I always look forward to playing No-Man's Wharf. Lost Bastille is one of my favorite souls areas. Beating the Frigid Outskirts solo is mega satisfaction. The areas are honestly more the focus of the game for me than the actual bosses. That being said, awesome looking bosses! They got a lot of armored bosses in this game that look rad. The Pursuer, Ruin Sentinels and Velstadt have great designs. NEVER FEELING SAFE. Stuff like soul memory and being invaded regardless of humanity keeps me uncomfortable at all times while I'm playing the game, and I find that to be very fun. None of the other Souls games makes me feel that way. PvP. Invasions and arena battles are hella fun in DS2. So many unique approaches to the fight. You also get the satisfying "on the ground riposte" animations that aren't in other games (except Elden Ring to some extent). FASHION SOULS. My characters have never looked better than they have in DS2.

Definitely not the best of the Souls games but it does have my favorite DLCs and some of my favorite weapons. It'd be cool to see DS2 remade in DS3's engine, that would be pretty sick

It's a matter of which DLCs I enjoy, DS1 DLC isn't bad but I'm not super into it, DS3 DLC 1 was pretty meh, Ringed City is great, haven't touched Bloodborne but its DLC does look amazing. Regardless I still like DS2 iron and ivory DLCs a lot more than DS1 DLC and DS3's Ashes

@@tinminator8905 I know it uses havok physics engine but based on what on what I read it's a branched off different engine from DS1, 3, BB etc. But for BB, DS3 and onward they used a revamped version of the DS1/DeS engine

@@lllXanderlll They are not using the havoc engine, they use an in house engine that uses some of the havoc engine's base for physics and such. For every single one of their games they revise the engine. That is how in house engines are. Games get more complicated and different functionality is needed. DS2 uses different file formats and has some internal structuring that differs, but that is not the engine.

Dark souls 2 was the first game I picked up in the entire series. Was so mind blown by it and spent so many hours getting that third rank in Covenant of Blood. Also getting the Illusory rings was a real pain!

i'm also playing the trilogy in order for the first time and i thought about dropping ds2 too but then i ran through the game smoothly, honestly most bosses are underwhelming and easy, the areas are the real enemies as they are too much annoying, and the level design is trash compared to ds1. Even tho i finished the game i don't think it was worth it lol, but now i can finally jump to ds3

DS2 Scholar of the First Sin is my favorite Dark Souls game. Took PVP to the next level, still miss the PVP covenants and rewards. The fire aura you had around your body if you had over a couple hundred PVP kills was dope. Amazing DLC with some awesome bosses. introduced powerstancing which Elden Ring adopted. Bonfire ascetics allowing you to fight bosses over and over. Introduced tons of new magic like hexes. The game is definitely underrated. Fun fact, it’s actually the best reviewed game of the dark souls trilogy. It gets a bad rap

Agreed. This was my first DS and after my initial attempts and getting annihilated by enemies, something clicked and it just stuck with me. I played it consistently for a couple of years, NG+ and beyond, several character builds... I love this game. I love the level design of DS but DS2 is the one! (IMHO...)
