I'd say DBD at first, is a horror game, but after you get use to the killers and played the game for a good whole, it's less scary. but still has those scary parts that make you jump.
@riot_rot2 жыл бұрын
that isn’t scare though. a small jump scare occasionally that only happens for a small amount of player base shouldn’t be considered horror or scary. it’s a little jump and then it’s immediately gone. nothing was scary it just started you.
@SharkiWeasel2 жыл бұрын
I disagree. I remember my first ever game of dbd was really scary, it was a Michael Myers, on the old gas hevan and someone used the old offering that made the map really dark. It was so scary!

Yeah thought it wasn't scary and debatably not horror but had a family member play it and they were terrified by the atmosphere and terror radius and lost it getting chased by tutorial trapper lol. There are a few things about it that are still tense and kind of scary but playing it for so many hours gets us used to it. I wish DBD does is shortens terror radius/lowers its volume and let ambient sounds be more prominent since some of their sound design is actually really good and creepy. Also would like maps to be more aesthetically creepy with its lighting/weather both as a buff to stealth killers but also because it builds up tension and dread which is fun.

The first 50 to 100 hours of Dead By Daylight are arguably some of the greatest horror inducing media ever. As someone with over 1K hours, (started in 2019) although I am not scared playing survivor all the time, I am scared with the sheer unpredictability from a human killer player, including all the variables you listed towards the end. Dead By Daylight is a great game and you earned a sub, excellent video.

This is great at explaining why despite having anxiety, I really enjoy horror games, movies, media in general! I never liked the idea of it as a kid so this is really eye-opening. Love the video! It is definitely the jumpscares that get me the most after playing the game for a while! But I definitely agree that not knowing the killer, or not hearing the killer early on also puts me on edge

To me, the scariest thing in dbd is when you are on a gen, haven't seen the killer yet... And then you hear the Oni scream. Oni is unironically one if the scariest killers, even with 0 stealth options.
@thedoomslayer58632 жыл бұрын
I just sigh and wonder "ok who fed him his power" and roll my eyes as we're about to be 4 man slugged for 4 minutes until we bleed out. Now Myers on the other hand? If the Myers player got a good map for stealthing like Lerys and is playing more immersed Myers then yes it can actually be a scary. Same goes to ghost face though I'd say to a lesser extent. As with Myers you never know if it's tombstone addons or not so when you hear the Tier 3 pop you genuinely panic as you don't know if you'll just go down or die on the spot.
@BasementDweller_ Жыл бұрын
Sometimes it is. But mostly it isn’t. Seeing people running around in Christmas outfits or Pajamas while being chased by a K-Pop killer makes the matches feel not spooky.
@THExLIFExISxTOxSHORT2 жыл бұрын
I would say yes, especially in the beginning. Most of the people you throw fresh into the game, will be on edge and more affected by jump scares and more stressed, when the killer chases them. If you play for a longer time, you definetly get used to most of the things, but like you said, some stealth killers or suprise attacks can still get a little scare out of you. For me the game also always gets scarier, when a new killer drops. Most of the time I go relatively blind into the first matches after an update, so I have no idea what the killer can really do, which makes it exciting and kinda scary to play againt. I recently got back to dbd after a long break, and my first night time against a Dredge? Definetely a creepy experience

Excellent video with multiple layers. Love the analysis of the horror genre along why people are attracted to it. I know with dbd it depends how one approaches or perceives certain things. For example I love Dredge especially when nightfall hits, the fact it is hard to see along with general atmosphere I find it thrilling, while others who approach it from a more mechanical perspective may be more frustrated by not seeing well. Also agree 100% on stealth killers, especially at the beginning of matches.
@thedoomslayer58632 жыл бұрын
Myers I believe is widely regarded as both the best mechanical scare (tombstone or infinite tier 3 or infinite tombstone, or scratched mirror, fear of the unknown is baked into his addons) And atmospheric scare for obvious reasons

It can be described as a horror game for first-timers but eventually once you know the game inside and out it transitions into horror comedy. The issue with calling it a horror game most all of the stealth killers are awful from a game play point of view Myers , Ghostface , Pig and scary for a moment until I remember they're practically powerless the same could be said for stealth builds for the first 2-6 hours it's scary because you don't know things yet but that would make something like fallout a horror game

I feel like it felt more like a horror game with the old graphics before the map reworks and all that, the OLD old og graphics. Yes the new ones look better and cleaner but imo they come at the cost of part of the atmosphere and aesthetic old dead by daylight had which helped it feel more scary.
@thedoomslayer58632 жыл бұрын
Against a good Myers I'd argue it very much is If the Myers is good you're always on edge "Did he take too long to hit tier 3? Oh God what if it's tombstone" "Why is tier 3 never ending! Oh shit it might be tuft of hair" "Huh I wonder why he hasn't tiered up yet from one OH SHIT he's right there! It's gotta be one of the mirrors" "OH SHIT my team mate just got Moried Infront of me but I'm safe now right? Oh tier 3 isn't ending it's both iri addons RUN" no other killer in the game genuinely makes me uneasy just by knowing who it is like Myers does. And if the Myers player is good, knows how to properly hide and stalk and sends you to a indoor map like Lerys then DBD goes straight back to being a horror game.
@verildarkvail45722 жыл бұрын
I do love this game, but I find the frustration often out ways the horror element. Admittedly I play mostly killer I love scaring people, and when I play survivor, I love getting scared, but it is a rare experience, it often depends on the killer and addon and perks. not that many people play stealth killers from my experience due to the lack of winning ability, with how easy it is to heal up it takes the edge of being afraid away.
@thedoomslayer58632 жыл бұрын
There's nothing like vsing a GOOD Myers main who brings you to RPD or Lerys and knows the best stalk spots to stalk you and remain as out of sight as possible. Then the panic as you either never hear Tier 2 pop and begin to think it's scratched mirror or never hear Tier 3 pop and think it's vanity mirror Or worse you hear Tier 3 pop and immediately panic trying to find the nearest locker as you have no idea if it's tombstone or not Or the panic that comes from hearing tier 3 pop and it NEVER goes away
@Thaznar Жыл бұрын
The problem of DBD as a horror game is that everything is expected and the game lacks tension. For new players it can evoke feeling of anxiety, but it will not last long. Killers are just too bombastic most of the time to be scary. The game also is lacking moody audio to create tension even while repairing a gen.

I actually skipped to the end, despite loving your videos. I just wanted to confirm my feelings after 2400+ hours lmaooo The horror after playing long enough truly is those jump scare moments, the number of times tinkerer or Ghostface are startled me is almost uncountable now. DBD stops being scary after spending around 20-50 hrs in the game or after watching content creators who know everything about the game. What makes something scary is the unpredictability or a lack of knowledge.
